This isn't sports related, but it is worth mentioning that BC alum Patrick Roche is
giving $20 million to Boston College. The goal of his gift is to help BC continue its support shaping and improving Catholic schools. I often lose sight that the school's mission is much more important than what happens on the playing fields.

It's got the buzzword "Catholic" attached, so naturally bitter people like matthew2 and commenters on boston.com have to find some way to attack it.

ReplyDeleteBecause I wouldn't mind telling my (future) kids the building is named after hoopster Tyler Roche for dropping 30 points against Dartmouth.
For those who don't have to listen to the radio broadcasts or ISP Sports, don't forget that Roche Brothers Supermarkets has been a major sponsor for BC sports broadcasts for years.

Sorry for perpetuating the politics here, but making the assumption that this post is somehow "conservative" is insane. Catholics in general (especially northeast Catholics) tend to vote Democrat.

Ryan, the Jesuits are one of the most liberal Catholic groups around speaking in a theological sense. There have been rumblings for years about having the Jesuit-led Georgetown disowned as a Catholic University. And as it was pointed out earlier, Catholics, esp. in the Northeast vote Democrat in overwhelming majorities.
ReplyDeleteb-bill -- interesting point. I've met more than a few folks who think BC (apparently like G'town)is "too" liberal and therefore does not qualify as a "Catholic" college. They sneer and say it is a college in the "jesuit tradtion" (apparently a put down). Wacky.

ReplyDeleteThe Jesuits are liberal. Wishing it were not so is not wacky. Catholics swung from one party to the other in presidential elections of the last 40 yrs. They (we) aren't moral issue voters. Sorta like the rest of the population. Northeast Catholics resemble their Northeast secular brethren. Some think that's wacky.
Or the money could have gone to demolishing some of our most annoying Newton neighbors for a change in tailgating policy. Now that would be money well spent. We could raffle off turns on the bulldozer.

I don't think the Jesuits can fit so neatly into a liberal or conservative box. they fit nicely in a Catholic catholic box though.
