In-game comments post: Notre Dame

Another road test for Spaz's squad. Let's hope the Irish bring out the best in the boys.

I will not be online during the game. Leave your thoughts and comments below.

  1. WE ARE! BC!

I'm hoping the guys come out strong and fast and get some push on the line early. The first quarter is definitely going to set the tone for the whole game.

Elsewhere in the ACC, GT beat UVA, which hopefully will deflate the Cavs' balloons a little before we head down there.

  2. 12 minutes before kick off and it remains a complete mystery how this game will go.

We know ND is not great, but can we beat them??? I have no clue!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Took BC in the +8.5 spread. Let's hope they can at least keep it close. Beat ND!!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I would not be surprised if they came out Bazooka. It is the best way to get the ball rolling for Shinske, who struggled when they let him throw early at Tech.

We know that the D isn't going to blitz, but they have to at least shut down the run and force them to be one dimensional. Nobody has really stopped Golden Tate, so the 4 deep shell will at least be effective preventing the big play. The way to keep them off balance would be to stagger the coverage to keep Clausen from getting a pre-snap read.

BC is WAY undersized on the D-line, especially at end... that wasn't a problem last season with the pressure coming up the middle.

I don't there is a matchup for Rudolph. That and special teams are big in ND's favor.

The first two road games were Robocop and Zombieland type carnage. I don't want From Dusk Till Dawn... Run the friggin ball.

  5. Wow, Alex Flanagan is hot.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Sister Ba-ba-ba....Ba-ba-barba Anne

    ReplyDelete
  7. First defensive play: not a good sign.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm back, for those that missed me, and yes Afghanistan is lousy all year long.

Go Eagles, I caught a few games while overseas, unfortunately one of them was VT.

I am loving the Dropkick Murphy's highlight reel, reminds me of a reel that was on this link from the 2007 season, anybody still got that one.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Eerie, eerie flashback happening right now.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 10 yards per play absolutely cannot continue or the prognosticators are right...this will be a blowout

Not liking what I am seeing at all.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Blatant, blatant holding on that 3rd down pass play.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Are you kidding no Holding call on that? Oh that's right, it's 11 on 16 when you play in South Bend.

    ReplyDelete
  13. There is no excuse why he should get so wide open. Play man defense and give some help. Screw the zone.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Beautiful play there by Wes. Great break-up. And Donnie did a very nice job on the fade the play before, too. We are very, very lucky to end this drive giving up only three.

    ReplyDelete
  15. We're lucky they just got a field goal.

Upset alert: Iowa State just beat Nebraska in Lincoln....without its starting QB and running back.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah, that looked a little too much like Tech.

The offense will have to carry the load.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Interesting first play...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Where is this arm strength that we keep hearing about with Dave? That was a TD if it was thrown past the DB.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Too short, Uncle Dave. C'mon.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So much for the Notre Dame defense being terrible. They look pretty damn good to me.

BC better wake up fast or they are going to Irish stew.

    ReplyDelete
  21. imaginative, but shakey start

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gutsy first play-call, but Dave looks uncomfortable so far. Hope he settles down. Hope the D does, too.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I thought Parris blew his knee out last week against USC. Nice to see him playing.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Crap, Albright is hurt. We don't have anyone else on the line.

Was he the victim of the clip?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, the return of the Charlie Weis face.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah, it was Albright that got clipped . . . downfield . . . away from the play.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Claussen! You can't hide your cowardice against the Eagles baby

    ReplyDelete
  28. Me likey the safety!!!!

We got a baseball game now. Defense looked much better that series.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow, that's a pretty sad road stat.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh sweet Referee revenge, but yeah Clausen's good enough to play on Sunday, sure just like BQ.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Okay guys, let's see if we can get something going here. I want to see Montel get a couple carries and I'd love to a deep pass off the play-action.

    A man can dream.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm not sure that Charlie Weis is "an optimal pooper"

    ReplyDelete
  33. Not impressed with ND so far. We could take this if last week's offense shows up.

    ReplyDelete
  34. May I stop holding my breath since the opening kickoff? That safety was sweet music!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Interestingly, I think if Notre Dame sticks with the running game, they can move the ball on BC's depleted d-line. Weiss will likely out-scheme himself and have Clauseen throw 40 times.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Lord, our OC is so predictable...but was that pass interference or what?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I hate how ND has players on both sides of the ball with the same number... I can't remember us ever doing that, but they dress like 120 players for every game too.

    ReplyDelete
  38. greeat toss SHin...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Whew. Nice completion there. Still not feeling Uncle Dave's pay thus far, but hopefully that will help him get his bearings.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Exhale... he won't finish 1-12 for 4 yards.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wow, I don't think Harris could have done any more to protect the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Does anyone know what Tom Hammond's deal is? I know he tries to remain impartial but the fact that he announces all ND football games and just looks like a complete suit really make me dislike him.

    ReplyDelete
  43. OMG. Looks like the O wants to give the ball away. Holy Christ.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Shinskie looks like he doesn't have a clue how to throw.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Shinskie may not survive this game. He is getting hammered every play. Tenuta is just not going to let up with the blitz.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Punting from the 35...ugh. Considering BC doesn't have a real kicker I guess that's the right call.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This offense looks dazed and confused. Ugggh.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Well, that was a huge waste of great field position.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I wonder if Tranquil knows what a screen pass or draw play is and what effect they can have on blitzes...

    ReplyDelete
  50. this looks like the VT Shinskie, so far, but let's stay positive. We have got to get the run game going.

But right now, let's load up the box on D. Clausen will not drop into the end zone again

    ReplyDelete
  51. Glad to see Albright back in.

EinE: I'm definitely hoping Shin turns it around and starts to make plays. The problem is, the receivers are open. He is not making plays. It's not that I'm being unduely pessimistic. I'm just describing what I see.

    ReplyDelete
  52. shin got to get past the inital nerves, taht's all

    ReplyDelete
  53. Nice stand there by the D. Loved the line-man shooting the gaps on the last couple run plays.

    ReplyDelete
  54. on that 3rd down play we actually rushed 2 and dropped 9 into coverage... and it worked!

    ReplyDelete
  55. What a catch by Gunnell!

    ReplyDelete
  56. The O-line just doesn't show up on the road... what gives there?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Defense is back. Offense sucks. WTF. Goddamnit.

    ReplyDelete
  58. This is all in Shinskie's head now. He can't even make easy passes to wide open receivers that are all under 10 yards. Quigley is the Player of the Game so far.

    ReplyDelete
  59. now shin is making me nervous...

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh Christ. BC is going to get shred with these 10+ yard cushions.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Shinskie has to pick it up - he's locking on to one receiver. Also, no imagination in the offense - none - zip.

    ReplyDelete
  62. We need a friggin' turnover.

    ReplyDelete
  63. not bad for 1Q

    exceeding expections overall.

    ReplyDelete
  64. BCNorCal, that suggestion to stay positive was more for me than anyone else. I judge no one on these boards because I live the biggest Glass Mansion on the block.

D looks good, especially Mclaughlin and the Secondary.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Where's the wild-cat? Where's Finch? Something to serve as a change-up in the running game.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Shinskie's line is ugly: 2/9 for 37 years. And Harris hasn't shown anything today.

Furthermore, why didn't Spaz consider going for it on the 4th and 10 and the 4th and 7 we had inside their 40?
I want to see more aggressive play calling :/, or more accurate throws.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I think we need to throw Haden in for a series, switch things up a bit. Or go wildcat with him and Montel.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Oh goddamn, first well-thought up play of the game and we take a ten-yard penalty.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Okay Shinskie - let's go, man.

Hey OC - give Montel a break - everyone in the stadium knows when he's going to get the handoff up the middle.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Isn't Josh still hurt?

Nice gain on the draw there.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Good lord is Gunnell clutch!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Damn Gunnell... suicide catch

    ReplyDelete
  73. Shinskie is throwing a really slow ball today...scary.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Was it the transfer or a bobble or what?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Honestly, Harris was going to be dropped for a five yard loss there... the blocking has been so bad tey have given him the yips.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Oh Boy! Tighten up Defense - the Offense might come around yet.

Great job D - keep it up, lads!

    ReplyDelete
  77. This play calling has been atrocious today outside of the first play of the game and the execution has been even worse. Spaz really needs to get Tranquil to shake things up or this game will be over shortly. It's only a matter of time before ND's offense wakes up.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Holy shit. I think God does not want us to score on offense. There's no other rational explanation.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Duke beat Maryland...nice

    ReplyDelete
  80. Great job showing blitz with Hughes in there.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Is Haden healthy?

    ReplyDelete
  82. This soft cushion thing is just not working inside our 40. Where's the blitz?

    ReplyDelete
  83. clemson up 7-3 on Miami

    ReplyDelete
  84. Wow, when was the last time Duke won an ACC game as a *favorite*? Navy's up late on Wake, UVA got crushed, UNC lost a heartbreaker, and it's still early in Miami. Crazy day in the ACC.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Awesome. We just keep shooting ourselves in the foot.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Even the announcers realize there is way too much cushion.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Luckiest penalty of all time. OF ALL TIME.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Okay, we were lucky to only give three there. The offense needs to do something on this possession. The D needs a break and we needs points.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Geez. Luckiest penalty ever. Maybe this is the way to stop ND though. Allow them to get inside the 10, then drop 8 guys into coverage allowing none of their receivers to find any open ground.

    ReplyDelete
  90. of all time??....bit of the blarney, i think

    ReplyDelete
  91. Netx drive is huge, need the run, a lot of clock killed and a score. If we get one of those, and they do not score before the half, I will be somewhat happy.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Now would be a good time to go on a nice drive - and SCORE!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Well, the all-caps should have given that away.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Atlast, a break. That fake was so Charlie it should be called the Cong play...he'll try anything to win and we have to get way more wild if we're going to win this thing.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Gause looks pretty promising as a return-man.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Kick returns:

    Gauze > Smith

    more aggressive

    ReplyDelete
  97. Oh crap. Harris cannot be hurt. Way to hang your back out to dry with the bobble, Dave.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I think Haden is hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Everyone knew that run was coming. Blame Tranquil for that one.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Hope he only had the wind knocked out of him.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Whooah...Montel can't be hurt. That would blow, for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Great... the O-Line finally got Harris killed.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Okay Dave, that was a nice throw. Try to do that twice in a row, now.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Shinskie needs to throw with some zip like that! Real pop!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Yeah, McCluskey is not a tailback.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Can Tranquil be any less imaginative on first down? If you're going to run it at least vary the play!

    ReplyDelete
  107. WHAT THE F***???? GET MCCLUSKY THE F*** OUTTA THE GAME AS THE PRIMARY RUNNER!!!

    ReplyDelete
  108. JARRRRRRRVIS! Pretty...

    ReplyDelete
  109. Oh wow, another dive. Surprise!

    ReplyDelete
  110. HAHAHA!!! TRANQUIL IS UNPREDICTABLE!!! LOLOLOLOL!

    /goddamn penalties

    ReplyDelete
  111. A wildcat here would be nice

    ReplyDelete
  112. Run to the middle of the field to set up a fg?

    ReplyDelete
  113. Brutal play by the line gets worse and Tranquill's creative response is to roll left... dumbass.

    ReplyDelete
  114. GUNNELL!!! What a route!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Nice hold on the PAT by flutie! Great drive Eagles!!!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I BELIEVE IN BC...TD Boston College!1

    ReplyDelete
  117. That sure did look like an obvious pick by Larmond but a score nonetheless. Nice drive and it finally looks like Shinskie has calmed down some.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Eagles!!!!

Observer College just cracked open a bottle of Jack Daniels.

    ReplyDelete
  119. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Sweet. We can beat these guys. Let's go D - you're doing great.

    ReplyDelete
  121. For all the crap throws before this drive, Shin sure looked sharp and made some nice throws on that drive. Hopefully he can keep it up(the good throws).

    ReplyDelete
  122. That drive was just what I (the future doctor) ordered. A bit of a time-eater, Shinskie made some nice throws and got in a bit of a rhythm, the receivers made some nice catches (I'm looking at you Justin!), and we took the lead. Hope the D appreciated the break is fired up!

    ReplyDelete
  123. Agreed, BravesB--Shinskie has settled down--now we need to tighten up on that cushion D.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Cornerbacks playing too soft.

    ReplyDelete
  125. They have been playing soft all game. Even the announcers have called them out for it. However, there have been no defensive adjustments made which is the most frustrating thing about the defense.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Again, we're playing prevent with the pass D...there's no sense to this. And Pat Haden is going to make my head explode. So much ND manlove mantra...ouch.

    ReplyDelete
  127. NBC = NOtreDame Broadcast Club

    ReplyDelete
  128. The DBs have really been playing off. Not like that's a surprise, though. That's been the scheme since, well, since I can remember (ie, at least 7 years). They have been more aggressive coming up to make the tackle on this drive.

    ReplyDelete
  129. This coverage gets ridiculous. If ND completes pass after pass for 10 years, why on earth has there been no adjustment?

    ReplyDelete
  130. If you can get to the QB with 2, that's good (we just did). But if you can't stop a Jimmy Claussen run with a zone D? Yeah, that's bad.

    ReplyDelete
  131. suckering them in on those 8 yd outs for the PICK-6.

    ReplyDelete
  132. And isn't Claussen supposed to have a turf toe injury? He's looking pretty mobile. And what do you know, another pass completion against soft coverage. Ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Goddamnit. No, we cannot cover Tate. Also, we cannot get to Claussen quickly enough.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Saw that TD pass coming from a mile away.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Terrible - that defensive scheme was terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Defense is so uneven today..

    ReplyDelete
  137. No pass rush kills us again. Weis could have made that throw.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Wow... almost a 2 hour first half. Thanks NBC.

    ReplyDelete
  139. ND is not going to beat itself. It's offense and Clausen are too good. It will take those 10 yard passes every time and more likely than not will convert them into points. BC has to change things up, check them at the line of scrimmage and provide over the top help or ND will eat this secondary alive.

    ReplyDelete
  140. This pass defense is just a bad strategy...What's the point of giving them 8 yards per down to avoid a long TD. Jimmy gets his 1st TD pass vs. BC in history...and we just dfanced the 2 step polka w/ their receivers all the way down the field. This blows.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Come on coaches - give these players a chance!!!

I'm sure the secondary would play differently if they called their own plays.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Despite the wretched play by the offense for most of the first half and very uneven defense and coaching, BC is only down 4 at the half, which is would gladly take any day.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I don't understand why the coaches don't trust our (very talented) DBs to cover tight (not necessarily man, though). Our safeties our starting twenty yards downfield, which also hurts in run-support. The corners are rarely closer than 10 yards and backpedal on the snap. Hard to jump routes when your coverage prescribes such a strategy. Bump the receivers, play tight zone, bring the safeties up, blitz LATE. There are so many things that can be changed to create a new look, but it seems like the coaches are afraid of mixing it up.

    ReplyDelete
  144. The coaches have been like that all year esp. on defense. They hate to make any in-game adjustments. Much like Al Skinner actually.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Al "Let em play" Skinner?

    ReplyDelete
  146. Anonymous5:30 PM

Screw it; I thought it would be worse...Weis just stated that they're attackig the soft coverage....Put Clausen in a wooden box

    ReplyDelete
  147. Yeah, NBC, this is a COLLEGE football game. The NFL plays *tomorrow*. Save the NFL for *tomorrow*.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Spaz is the original architect of the soft cushion--we've played ND with this cushion for the last two years, but in those previous years we had a pass rush, Clausen was inaccurate and we had the lead...different vibe today. What should we do?

Our run D has held them, but we're not scoring much on the 170th ranked defense in the country--though our last possession sent a message that we're bringin' it in the next half. It's going to be the pass defense that decides this game in the next stanzas, and turnovers...Go Eagles!!Hit the Irish!!

    ReplyDelete
  149. Anonymous5:37 PM

Very odd game so far. The soft zone did a nice job for the most part, though they apparently forgot to tighten up in the red zone at the end of the half.

On the flip side, the offense has receivers running free all over the place. Shinskie finally settled late in the half and made the necessary throws. Good second half coming.

Related note: Donnie Fletcher I'm convinced is the worst cover corner in the country. /rant

    ReplyDelete
  150. What a horrible commercial. Is ND finally advocating for socialism? Did Obama get to them during his commencement address?

    ReplyDelete
  151. Here we go! 2nd half!

By the way, Gause looks awesome on returns. Hope he's convinced the coaches.

    ReplyDelete
  152. The same running play on first day yet again. Adjustments? Laughable.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Statement drive. Statement.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Harris up the middle in 1st down - how's that working out for you, Tranq?

    Pretty well. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  155. sideline reporter: "bc said they wanted to cut down on penalties, but they havent been able to do that, committing 3 penalties for 20 yards."

last time i checked 3 penalties for 20 yards isnt that much... i know nbc pays a lot of money to cover notre dame but the bias is killing me.

other than that gunnell has come up huge so far today! touchdown!

    ReplyDelete
  156. Well,well,well...That was a drive, and Shinskie was flawless,Gunny was golden, and the Montel did his thing. May we see that again, soon? Time for a stop an' pop.

    ReplyDelete
  157. 8th game in row to open second half with"

1st-10, BC44 14:53 M. Harris rushed to the left for 3 yard gain

    Now that is tradition!!

    where are you CT?

    ReplyDelete
  158. Didn't Spaz say he wasn't going to play such soft coverage? BC's CBs are still playing at least 10 yards off the line of scrimmage.

    ReplyDelete
  159. same problem with the pass-d scheme.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Come'on O, time for the back breaking 92 YD drive capped off with an in their face TD!

    ReplyDelete
  161. Scoreboard watching: Clemson leading Miami by 4 in the 3rd qtr.

    ReplyDelete
  162. It's about time they break that out.

    ReplyDelete
  163. More OL brutality... argh

    ReplyDelete
  164. Alrighty guys, nice little Bazooka Joe to open the drive. Keep it going!

    ReplyDelete
  165. It could be 1st and 30 and BC would still run the ball up the middle on 1st down.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Rich is having a GAME!

And Uncle Dave is looking real comfy.

    ReplyDelete
  167. That pass to Larmond was rock'n roll!

    ReplyDelete
  168. Keep up the good protection, and kick those holes open for pete's sake!

    ReplyDelete
  169. tranquill's getting a lot of face time

    ReplyDelete
  170. I hate Favre, but that pump-fake was Favre-esque.

    ReplyDelete
  171. POINTS!!! We need points!

    ReplyDelete
  172. That hurts. Turning point of the game now.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Someone rip those f***ing sleeves off harris! He can't hold the ball with them on!

    ReplyDelete
  174. AWESOME! JUST WHAT I WANTED! SO GREAT!

Montel, yeah, I think you're going to be carrying the ball everywhere this week. Also, the passing game has driven our offense. Why not dance with the one that brought ya?

    ReplyDelete
  175. That draw on second down was a good call. Now the first down dive up the middle.....

    ReplyDelete
  176. truly unbelievable, talk about Jekyl and Hyde, I mean Harris!!!

    ReplyDelete
  177. Great break for the Irish - let's get another safety here. Stuff em, BC.

    Let's face this adversity.

    ReplyDelete
  178. I don't have huge problem with the call. Montel is a very good player. However, we had had only sporadic success on the ground to that point and Dave has been throwing the ball pretty well. On top of that, Montel had already fumbled once while we were driving for points. So yeah, I don't have a big problem with the call. I do have a problem with Dave not getting a chance to throw once we got inside the ten.

    ReplyDelete
  179. That fumble hurts, but we can beat ND on the O side if we stop this easy love affair pass protection. We're making Clausen look good just letting him play catch. The pass rush needs to show up NOW with their backs pinned to the goal line. Damn!Go Eagles! Shake it off!

    ReplyDelete
  180. Okay, zebras, call a hold. Any play. Just call one. Giles was held in the end-zone there. Shoulda been two.
