Dan Lembke committed to BC last weekend. Here is
his interview with Scout.com. His point about "family" should be noted. I think we fans underestimate how important the other players and families are in recruiting. There is a lot of self selection going on.
Other than Rettig, the big news on the depth chart is that Swigert is now starting.
In other recruiting news, BC target Rob Trudo now has an offer from Pitt.
Jason Sylva is another BC target who is at Tabor.

Eric - that's an interesting concept. Here are a few.
ReplyDeleteI submit that BC's first WTF win was September 19, 1964 21 to 14 over Syracuse (last play Hail Mary from Larry Marzetti to TE Bill Cronin)We weren't a "program" then.
Here's another - September 11, 1976 14 to 13 over Texas. BC scored on the first play and added another early and held on.
How about November 20, 1993 41 to 39 over #1 Notre Dame (last play FG)
To add to the WTF wins, I think there was some game in the 1980s were Flutie threw a long pass at the end of the game and won. . . maybe it was against Miami?

BC 14, ND 7 (@ND)
BC unranked, ND undefeated and ranked #4 at game time. They finished 10-3 and ranked #17, we finished unranked with a 3-4 record in Big East play.
1998:
BC 41, Georgia Tech 31 (@GT)
They finished 10-2 and ranked #9, we finished 4-7.
I wouldn't classify the Flutie Miami win as a WTF; that was a case of two stellar QBs locked in a classic offensive battle. While, as BC fans, we are conditioned to expect the worst, that was not a true shocker.
ReplyDeleteI figured that I would leave that one to you, Mod. :-) Truthfully, we believed in miracles with Flutie and everyone in my house knew we had a chance with 26 seconds left. Not sure that it was in the WTF category, then - greatest, most exciting win? Yes - right up there, but that guy was special and so were his teammates. It's amazing how well they play when they believe!!!!

Scott Mutryn was great at QB against GT in 1998. And Mike Cloud was special for BC.
ReplyDeleteat least looking at the depth chart gets me excited.....about next year. if we can turn it around and go on a little run at the end of this season, there could be positive momentum with a lot of key contributors coming back...ok too soon for next year but still...

ReplyDeleteI have to say, Flutie's play might be our most historic win, but Ryan vs VaTech in Blacksburg on a Thursday was our most exciting win (and at the time, given rankings and unbeaten, greatest, though that later crashed)... The campus/mods that night were probably top 3 nights at my time at BC.. and the fact that the RAs and BCPD just sat there and let everyone enjoy the moment made it even better..

Judging by how bad our football season is going, I think it is safe to start looking at some basketball articles. Here is a Blue Ribbon preview. I know that we may struggle this year, but I am cautiously optimistic about the next few years.

ReplyDeleteBack to football - what do we think happened to Clyde Lee? Were our expectations too high? Why haven't they given Billie Flutie a chance? Isn't he as good as Amidon and Swiggert? Maybe not, I guess.

Coleman should start over Momah, who it appears has stone hands.
Final analysis - we have had a huge dropoff from the likes of Blackmon, Challenger, Gonzalez, Megwa, Jarvis, Gunnell, Robinson, Calender and those guys - and our tight ends can't seem to get a pass in Nyquil's scheme. Our new players have to step up now as freshmen and RSF.
Next year we will be much better in the passing game.

This was the first BC football game I ever attended-first week, freshman year. They had all of the frosh sit together near the end zone. The last second desperation pass was caught by Bill Cronin right in front of the student section. We had long since discarded the colored placards they had made us wave in pale imitation of the USC and UCLA card sections.
This was the first time I heard the cries of "To the Circle" as we marched out of Alumni and into Beacon Street on our way to Cleveland Circle.
Jack, we old farts are probably scaring the kids; but I hope they survive having had as much fun as we did--at least in retrospect. [grin]
Dan Lembke is most important player of Boston. He played very nice. I always follow him.
