In-game comments post: Florida State

We hoped for a hero in Rettig's debut. Obviously he (and BC) got shortchanged. Can things turn around in his second start? We will see. Leave your comments and thoughts below.

During the game I will probably have the occasional comment on Twitter.

  1. Go BC! Just hoping to see a close game (build momentum) for an easier second half schedule and see a bright future or four years of Chase.

  2. Hey, we're still tied right now!

  3. Go Eagles! And God help us.

  4. ill take the 3 but damn woulda been nice to punch one in after that first play. rettig throws darts, now we need some people who can catch them

    ReplyDelete
  5. Ryan Day needs to teach our players how to catch the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Rettig has realized on his first set that you are allowed to throw to the guy in the flat - something Dave could not figure out in 17 games.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Gotta get more than 3 out of these big gains. Still, Oline is opening some holes.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Good to see Spaz getting a little angry with that late wild cat formation.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It was fun while it lasted.

  10. florida state will be looking at the run

    ReplyDelete
  11. Did I read my screen right? Is NC State down 21-0 to ECU right now?

Welcome NC State fans to the patented "TOB huge win followed by a wtf game"

    ReplyDelete
  12. why cant BC get kids like that ECU quarterback... Davis? Man he's good.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Tranq and Rettig need to start figuring things out.

    ReplyDelete
  14. They have to go deep first play on this series.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Nice to see the defense learned about the bubble screen from the Maryland game. Good adjustments.

Did FSU piss off Fletcher or what? He's a beast.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh f--k. Rettig looks hurt again. Defense better start scoring.

    ReplyDelete
  17. if you know no other BC defensive player's number, you have to know that Herzy is 94...don't blame the number font.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Alright, who comes out at QB after this break?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think that was Castonzo who got blown up on that last sack, wasn't it? Or was it a TE?

    ReplyDelete
  20. What a stupid play, Claiborne. Brain surgeon.

    ReplyDelete
  21. i love the announcer's surprise as he announces that we are breaking out "a FEW DIFFERENT PLAYS. can you imagine?!?

    claiborne is an idiot

    ReplyDelete
  22. BC is absolutely getting jobbed on some of these calls.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Apparantly our O-Line has decided they can pass protect or run blcok but not both in one game.

Rettig isn't lighting it up, but his receivers aren't helping him and if this were Shinskie last year one quarter into his career on the road, we'd be down 35 by now.

    Go Eagles!! Quigley for MVP!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wow. Who knew the refs played for FSU?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Man, our offense is blowing this game. FGs, great field position...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Who would've thought we'd be conservative with 63 secs left?

    ReplyDelete
  27. After those two long runs by Montel, there has been some atrocious playcalling by Nyquil. On those first 2 possessions, Harris got the ball on a few stunts and delayed draws which opened up running holes. Now Nyquil is running the ball up the middle on first and second down leaving Rettig in an impossible 3rd and long. How about a few playaction passes Nyquil? How about throwing the ball deep to prevent FSU from putting 11 in the box? Good God he's terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  28. That is probably the best 30 minutes we've played this year. So we got that going for us...

I still think we can do it. Need some big plays from the D. Rettig, despite the stats, is making the right decisions.

BTW, Shinskie didn't even travel and according to a tip was in Lower and not watching the game.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm starting to believe that Tranquil has only 1 to 2 pages of playbook that offer "non-traditional" plays. This is where you find the counters, the roll-outs, the play actions, and all the other "trick" plays. Its not so much that he doesn't call enough, its that he has already called all of them.

I actually liked the conservative call to end the half. Start on our 20 with 1 TO. Our receivers haven't been getting space, lets not force things and potentially make a mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Agreed Danny.

I think Tranq has a list of "trick plays" (aka slighty exciting/ thoughtful plays) that the Youngins on the staff make him call. He usually rolls them out first quarter and when they don't work he goes straight back to trying to kill Montel so he can be charged with manslaughter and go back into retirment.

  31. BTW, Shinskie didn't even travel and according to a tip was in Lower and not watching the game.

seriously? get this bum out of my alma mater.

    ReplyDelete
  32. So I told myself I was not going to get emotionally invovled anymore this year and now I'm yelling and my blood pressure is up. At least the team has brought back some life to their game. Now if we can let Chase throw on first down and get a turnover or two...we can do it. Plus, these refs are terrible. Never seen a worse missed pass interception penalty.

    GO Eagles

    ReplyDelete
  33. Just finished telling a non-BC friend that as far as I'm concerned this game is over but I'm fine with it.

I don't mean that to sound as pessimistic as it did, but Tranq is not a fan of adjustments so anymore scoring will be a huge bonus.

And as far as I'm concerned, hanging tough with FSU for the first half is a huge victory and building block for the team and Rettig especially for the last half of the season.

...but I hope I'm wrong! GO EAGLES!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Defense has to score.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm taking away Quigley's 2010 MVP award if he keeps shanking these kicks.

Defense needs to score. Defense needs to stay onsides.

    ReplyDelete
  36. That was a heartbreaking offsides.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Once he got pushed down to 3rd-string, the Transfer Countdown Clock started on Shinskie.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Well I'm sure ECU will need someone to take over once Dom Davis graduates.

  40. All I have to say is wow.

    ReplyDelete
  41. this is incredible. noel looks like a player. he's made some big plays today. there is hope!!!! finally a real competitive effort.

    ReplyDelete
  42. We have a QB. He isn't a heisman candidate, he isn't even all ACC. But dammit, he's the first QB we've had in 19 games.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Whoa...we escape a sack and make a play! There is hope.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Nice throw on the run...

You knew FSU would be flat after the Miami win, but Ponder looks like he's still in the hot tub with all those hot FSU co-eds.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Is this real life? Are these really our 2010 Eagles?

    ReplyDelete
  46. That was Ryanesque

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't take anything away from the comments we all made this week. They didn't deserve our optimism.

That said the QB is playing well and Montel is making things happen. If those things happen, the team can perform as well as we anticipated when the season started.

It's a long year. Even IF they win this, let's see them put it together again.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Michael, do you really have to suck the fun out of this?

    ReplyDelete
  49. is it just me or is spaz way more animated today? lots of energy from the team today.

    ReplyDelete
  50. If we lose, it's the offense's fault. Again. The defense has been ridiculous.

    Great effort.

    ReplyDelete
  51. EL MIZ: I agree that Spaz is looking fired up today. It's reflected in the team.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hmm...don't get the pooch kick if we're still giving it to them at the 50. Might have to rethink that one.

They finally fooled us. Oh well, we should've been scoring TDs not FGs.

    ReplyDelete
  53. This playcalling is still worthless. Someone get a damned clue on offense.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ok, we just need the offense to get the ball back to FSU so the D can score and we'll be ok

    ReplyDelete
  55. Will we show any resilience?

    ReplyDelete
  56. still allergic to the play action

    ReplyDelete
  57. I hate Nyquil. What a jack...

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh my Lord, what is Tranquill doing?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Run up the middle to set up a 3rd and long. Genius Tranq. Absolutely genius.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Please can we throw on 1st down...

    ReplyDelete
  61. So our Freshman phenom throws arguably one of the best completions of any BC QB for the last two years and we follow it up with two straight runs up the middle? Holy Christ!

    ReplyDelete
  62. at least we used up our timeouts.

    brilliant.

good effort today. rettig shows some promise. our wrs are below avg.

too many fgs, not enough tds.

    ReplyDelete
  63. the biggest obstacle to this team's success for the remainder of the season is gary tranquil. this team is fully capable of winning games. get the old man out of there

    ReplyDelete
  64. Gary Tranquill needs to go. We have no chance with this guy. He is calling games similar to 1930's football before they invented the forward pass. The play calling is cowardly and he needs to open it up. We have nothing to lose.

    ReplyDelete
  65. It may look like a L on the record, but I saw our team show up for the first time all year. Our defense finally had some fire to them, or head coach finally showed some of his fire and energy.

We spent all day fighting questionable calls by the refs and even more questionable calls by our OC. I can't wait to see Rettig develop over the next 3.5 years, hopefully he gets an actual playbook to go along with his talent.

This is the first time I've felt close to optimistic all year.

    ReplyDelete
  66. "The play calling is cowardly and he needs to open it up. We have nothing to lose."

    That's it.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Ben - sorry you feel that way. I was very excited about our play. Still am in many respects.

I, unlike most of our fans expect BC to win the ACC and compete for national championships every year. One decent game against FSU doesn't come close to quenching my thirst.

Most everyone will discredit me (and the few who share my views) but if it's not about winning football at the highest levels, we all might as well have gone to St. Johns, Marquette or somewhere else that doesn't play big time football.

I have no interest in cheering being competitive and watch everyone else around the country have fun.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Liked everything I saw out of Rettig today.

It's an L but if we play like that and somebody shows Tranq the video of Rettig's handful of great throws, we will do well over the final 6.

    ReplyDelete
  69. It's gonna be a great role reversal. Normally coaches show the players film, but I think Chase is gonna be the one sitting Tranq down.

This is me dodging two hits and throwing a strike to Swigert.
Here's me threading the needle and my WRs dropping it
Here's me on 3rd down in a hostile away game standing tall under pressure and nailing Pantale over the middle.
Here's me finding Montel in the flat.
Here's me thinking about making a terrible decision and then accepting the sack.

    Gimme the damn ball!

    ReplyDelete
  70. The "transfer countdown clock" for Dave?

You don't think he'll try to hang around in the background and ride whatever scholarship they'll give him to get a degree?

Pro sports are not in his future.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Agreed Dan. ATL has always said it's not about the talent we have. When guys start executing they can compete. When coaches start holding the players accountable, they can compete. When players hold each other accountable, they compete. If they compete often enough, they expect to win.

Fletcher played well today. He's been criticized much and performed.

Montel ran hard. His ability has never been in question.

Rettig has the tools and should get a big boost of confidence.
