It is good that Coach Flip is giving York the challenge to be a better coach than Spaz, and BC grads that care about excellence understand they need to punish the school to eliminate Gene and Spaz.
ReplyDeleteTOB also had 6 bowl wins. spaz had 1 as interim coach in 06 and has yet to win a bowl as HC.

ReplyDeleteThere is a chain-of-command in this situation. GDF is not the "top of the food chain". Right now, it would appear that WPL is being intimidated by the new chair of the Board of Trustees. He also is up for replacement. Jesuits are dying off. Gonzaga went to a lay president as did Georgetown. I believe that Big Jack Krack needs to make an appointment to meet with both the wife. Kathleen McGillicuddy (College of Newton '71and absorbed by BC in '75) as well as her husband, Ron Logue (BC '68 as well as a subsequent BC MBA) and lay his cards on the table. BC football is a cultural phenomenon which needs preservation. It cannot be allowed to bleed a slow and agonizing death. Tim Russert lives.
ReplyDeleteIf you exclude FCS games, then the winning percentages are even more shocking. Spaz is sub .500 against FBS.

ReplyDeleteGot back from Miami a couple of hours ago. When the players were allowed to play (offense) it was a fun game to watch.
ReplyDeletePrevent Offense for the entire 4th period is pretty pathetic. Congratulations to the team. Defense made adjustments and hung tough. Coach McGovern did a nice job.
As happy a I am, this was a victory over an under-achieving Miami team. We can't gloat too much. I feel we could have beaten them 34 or 37 to 14 - but our offensive philosophy is just that - offensive to any student of the game. As soon as we get ahead, we shut it down and hope the defense will hold.
I'm going to take a little time and digest this whole situation. There are many great posts to consider.
I like Lenny's idea and we should use this to paint Gene into his own corner.
"it doesn't matter" that we had a bad season - we have an outstanding coach and expect a spectacular year in his 4th season in 2012.
It doesn't matter what supporting fans think - we will be in the Orange Bowl in the next 2 years, if not next year.
It doesn't matter that we have fan apathy, a poor game day experience, empty parking spaces and empty seats in Alumni Stadium during games , even "big" games - our future looks very bright around here.
It doesn't matter that we play a style of football that is outdated and boring but doesn't have to be - the fans will come around. We've never drawn well at BC since you've been here anyway.
It doesn't matter that we now find ourselves outside the Top 100 in FBS because we fail to attack on offense, show enthusiasm on the sidelines and go for it in order to win the game - we claim to be Harvard during the week, and we'll soon be Stanford on the weekend.
It doesn't matter that we can't seem to mount a top notch recruiting effort with results that BC deserves, our best coach in 15 years will mold us into ACC Champions in spite of it.

That's right, Gene - it doesn't matter what happened this year - by your own testimony we will expect nothing but great effort and positive results next year in football and all sports.
Thanks Gene - this will help us get through the long winter.

ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I'd jump at the chance to meet Ron Logue and Kathleen McGillicuddy someday to discuss the direction of the BC Sports experience from an alumnus/fan point of view.
I know their interests are much higher and broader than that - yet the state of our program is a direct reflection on Boston College and therefore of interest to them both.
I have just posted a letter to the Flynn Fund asking them to withdraw my name from the donor list. I refuse to contribute to the demise of the football team and if the school wishes to allow GDF to run unchecked and thumb its nose at the fanbase , it can do so without my support. Do they care? I'm sure they do not, but in the face of this unbearable arrogance, it felt good to finally say it to them

The one sensible (from a PR standpoint) thing he could have said is, Yeah, I've heard all the fans say they want to fire Spaz, but I still think he's an excellent coach and we're sticking with him.
GDF could have said,
