Does anyone from the Boston media want to talk to Spaz?

It is one thing for the Boston media to ignore BC. I can live with that since there are usually bigger stories out, like say the Penn State molestation scandal. But the more telling sign of complacency in the local sports media field and on the BC beat is that no one has gotten a quote from Spaz on the subject. Here is a BCS head coach who played under and revered Joe Paterno and was a peer of Jerry Sandusky. No one thought to get a reaction quote on the case? Florida papers asked Al Golden about it. Other Big Ten coaches avoided answering questions, but at least they were asked.

Like Golden, I am sure this is very painful for Spaz. But the beat guys as journalist at least need to get an official "no comment" on the subject. Complacency in the media makes them less relevant and also enables cover ups like went on in Happy Valley.

  1. If there's someone with a Big East connection, you can be sure Blauds has put in a call.
You're right about complacency - usually when there's a big story, you expect reporters to want to find an angle into it.

  2. You mention Spaz was a peer of Sandusky. It might be that Spaz was a protege of Sandusky.

Sandusky was an All-Star defensive end in his senior year at Penn State -- 1965. Spaz was a frosh (or soph) at the time at Penn State. Spaz was also a DE and was himself an all-star in 1968. See Penn State info

  4. Sorry Jack -- this was a spoof . I just channeled Spaz for this, maybe i did too good a job.

I guess I've been reading Observer College too much!

  5. I removed Mod34b satirical post on Spaz's comments and jack's response because I don't won't people thinking it is real. No problem with Mod34b -- he just did it too well.

This is a hot button issue, so I do want to make sure that if/when Spaz responds it is real and in the proper context. I can only imagine what my reaction would be. Spaz has children near the age of the victim. I am sure he is a lot like Matt Millen and feels the gamut of emotions.

  6. You got me good on that one, Mod - and I am relieved by ATL's explanation.

As Bill could tell, I was pretty upset by the whole thing.

  7. If it happened, Spaz would certainly start it off with "Once again...." which he does for 98% of the questions

  8. mod34, your quote was awesome, very very believable.

  9. Block -- thanks. I'll save my new Spaz impersonation skills for a less horrible topic.

ATL -- good idea to delete. I thought it would be seen as an obvious spoof, but it was not.

  10. Mod, maybe something to do with Spaz and his relationship with TOB? Very good job, I believed it as well. Yikes.

  11. I missed it, damn it. How about a re-post with a disclaimer?

  12. maybe the BC community can nudge Spaz to seek the Penn State job. They are going to need someone for the next few years that draws zero attention from anyone.

  13. ** THIS IS NOT A SPOOF**** (and, frankly, not all that interesting)

Per BCI, Spaz has now spoken:

    Q. Given your ties at Penn State I wanted to ask you your reaction to everything that's going on up there.

FRANK SPAZIANI: Well, I had a statement yesterday, someone asked me about it. All I know is what I read in the media and what I see on the TV. Once again, I know how that works. So I don't have all the facts to it. Obviously it's very troubling. But my heart and prayers go to all the victims and their families. We have to wait and see how this sorts out and the other aspects of it.

  14. The Boston TV news media (I think WCVB-ABC) interviewed him after practice yesterday, given his past connection to Penn State, and he said that his prayers went out to the victims and their families, most of all.

  18. Apparently Blauds got your memo and published a blurb:
