Don Brown as DC, Defense in for whole new look

Bruce Feldman is reporting that Don Brown will be the new Defensive Coordinator. This is a strong hire on many fronts.

Brown knows New England inside and out having worked at both UMass and UConn. He was also a successful head coach at UMass, winning nearly 70% of his games. Addazio only has two years of head coaching experience. Having a seasoned coordinator who has been a head coach should be a stabilizing force and provide a good sounding board. Brown also has experience coaching in the ACC, as he was the DC for Friedgen's final two seasons.

This is a clear change in our approach. If Spaz was a bend but don't break, Brown is the opposite. He blitzes early and often. It might not provide the consistency of the good Spaz's defenses, but the approach will be aggressive and hopefully fun to watch.

Ironically Mark Whipple insisting on Brown over Spaz as his DC was one of the reasons Whipple didn't get the job in 2007. Now things have come full circle. I don't know if we have the players to carry out Brown's designs in 2013, but at least this is a signal that Addazio is going to pave his own way and change the approach on the field.

  1. I like this hire a lot. One of the reasons I didn't want Diaco was he's a bend but don't break guy. I l

  2. Love it! Love it! Love it!

Now be patient folks. This may be a 3-year turn-around job. Need to get the talent in place to run these schemes. Also, be prepared for opposing offenses to get frustratingly quick scores. Live by the blitz, die by the blitz. I am comfortable with that risk, but many BC fans won't like it.

  3. The UConn fans are upset about losing Brown. That is a very good sign.

  4. good hire by Addazio. must have been what Bates was talking about when he referenced his nationwide coach network.

really like how the team identity is shaping up to be a ball-control, physical offense with a tough against the run, blitzing D.

i wonder if Brown will bring some UCONN recruits with him? they had a handful of Defense commits that also had offers from BC.

so we have Day as OC, that temple guy Frye as the Line coach, and now Brown at DC and allegedly McGovern at LB Coach. and smith will not return as WR coach. thats all we know right now, right?

  5. It would seem Al Washington hasn't been notified of a decision on him yet. I've seen recruits mention Smith being out based on emails from the guy himself, but none have mentioned Al. Hopefully he stays, though I think he needs some help on the D Line. Moving McGovern to LBs (still a rumor I don't b uy into) and bringing a guy like Brown in could be the help to his coaching he needs...

  6. Daz's interim report card

    DC - Brown - A-
LB - McG - C- (poor past; loser)
    DBs - Inc
    DL - Washington? - B+

OC - Day - D- (never good; loser)
    OL - Frye? - B
    WR - Gunnell? -- B?
    TE - Devine? - F (loser)
    RB - Inc.

    ST -- Desai? - F (huh?)

  7. Nice to see that you are consistent in your "I know better than the experts" approach. Why not publish a roster of your thoughts on a staff of all A+ coaches? Then we can send it to Leahy and the BOT as evidence of the magnitude of the incompetence in the AD department.

We defend your right to speak, but have a problem with your wisdom (and maybe arrogance).

  8. Joseph, you say I have a "I know better than the experts" approach.

You must be of Irish descent to critize someone for expressing an opinion and then suggesting that merely stating one's opinion means that one thinks they are better than the experts.

    So, pathetically, Irish.

It's just my opinion, lad. Nothing more.

  9. Jospeph, if we didnt post our negative thoughts your life would be empty and you would have nothing to say on this blog. I am disappointed by the hire, I thought we should have kept the old crew together and kept Spaz as the DC!

  10. ATL - I like it, but what about Chuck Heater from Temple? I thought he would have been a good option as well. Can we bring him in another role?

  11. can the basketball coach hire some experienced assistants also?

  12. Good hire. Really good hire.

  13. thanks folks for the support for my suggestion that we stay positive. I guess that if you were not so negative we wouldn't have a contrast that we could compare. You like dark, we like it light. I like to win, you would to prefer to predict losing. I we lose next year will you be thrilled that you predicted it? Will you be sad if we go to a bowl(no matter how bad)?

  14. Hey Mod34b- up yours.

  15. Blist, I am an Irish expert. Fear not.

  16. Mod, how in god's name can you give Washington a B+ as line coach. Our line could get no push and cause no pressure. They were the definition of ineffectual.

  17. Dannyboy. You are right.

Although Washington was not out primary DL coach, in 2012, he obviously did not seem do too well as asst. DL coach. Wishful thinking on my part that if he is the DL coach, he will be good.

But gotta think Brown will pick his guy for DL coach.

  19. with a Uconn guy on board, can bc get that jasudowich kid to re-committ?

  20. I saw Jasudowich's last high school (Super Bowl) game versus Governor's Academy. He got destroyed by a bunch of lacrosse players; he is not close to being a D1 prospect.

  21. In response to Joseph's snark-fest, the "experts" agree that the Daz pick was a dud. BC couldn't even crack the Top 15 for the best coaching hires this offseason:

  22. "experts"? not. One guy who is really only a rookie himself. Why don't Bravebill and M34B collaborate on a ideal coaches roster, figure out how to get them and forward it to the AD. Never can tell, dreams can come true. Ask the kids about the tooth fairy.

  23. Hey 34! State and defend your opinions with vigor and conviction, but there's no need to slander those of Irish (or any other) descent. Shame on you, you silly git.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's ok mod10. He can certainly state with conviction, but can't defend without BS and slander. If my ancestors even began to hear the defamation of being called Irish they would find him and then, you never know.

  26. Joseph:

If you mean that your ancestors would be offended by being called Irish (as "the defamation of being called Irish" would mean), then you missed my point entirely. I was calling 34 out for his actual defamation of the Irish, something no respectable BC alum could possibly condone, let alone practice.

  27. Thanks, I got it. By "irish" I was referring to another place in the midwest

    ReplyDelete
  28. mod10, you are so mistaken. I know the Irish all too well because I am Irish - 100%.

And, I know the good and bad traits of the Irish. The Irish do have a very dark side, rght?

What I said was not slander, but an accurate description of one trait that is found among the Irish.

You can't seriously disagree with that now, can you?

You do know what Joyce and Freud said about the Irish, right?

As for Joseph, he obvioulsy is not an Eagle, but he is a troublemaker contrarian.

  29. M34b, Wrong as you were about the larmond performance. For some reason the dark side of your heritage seems to include an unwarranted arrogance of being smart and knowledgeable.

Maybe its because I'm a triple eagle that I can't stand the BS that gets posted by a few. Take a lesson from Miz. He knows of what he speak and he speaks it well.

When will you post your coaches roster for your submission to Bates? We are all waiting.
