Ryan Day will be the new Offensive Coordinator

Long-time readers and my critics can hopefully chuckle at this post's headline. I don't think think anyone expected the twists and turns it took to get the job. His results in Temple were not good and there are many BC fans that think he is all hype, but I like the move. My hope is that Addazio will give him free reign and we will finally have a consistent and competent offense.

Day got screwed by Gene and Spaz. He could be coaching in many other places, but he wants to be at BC. Obviously as Bates has just explained, that desire to win at BC means a lot to the administration.

I will obviously have more opinion as this all develops.

  1. Well, at least ATL has his source back!

  2. Everyone assumes that I am plugged into Day. I spoke to him once at a party six years ago. I got the "Day to be OC" think from a BC employee years ago. I rang with it and I don't think anyone expected Spaz to pull the switcheroo.

  3. "Day to be OC" "thing" not think. Typo

  4. BC needs to crank up the PR machine. I am one of many that are not excited with the hire. This could be changed with a good PR campaign.

  5. I used to work for the football team when I was an undergrad and I often felt that Ryan was one of the best assistant coaches. He related really well to the players and seemed to have more of an aggressive, smarter approach to the game than many of the old-school types that BC has employed in the past. I think while he was there, he was handcuffed by Bible - hopefully having more real authority will allow him to open things up.

  6. "I want to win championships!"

    He said the "W" word!

  8. He just kissed Jerry York's ass!

  9. He's a young guy and I respect your opinion ATL, so let's hope he puts Rettig in Heisman contention!

  10. I watched the Spaz presser 4 years ago and this guy is way, way more enthusiastic.

  11. They need to give this guy a portable mic. He can't sit still.

  12. "Our offense will be dictated by our personnel"

    Love that.

  13. What kind of offense do we expect Day to run?

  14. He said all the right things. I love his passion.

  15. Reporter just mentioned how BC could not win a national title with Flutie and Ryan.

He answered that he feels he can recruit to BC and there is no reason BC cannot compete for a national championship.

He keeps claiming this is his dream job.

  16. Obviously, you cannot predict the success of a coach based on a single press conference but I will say this introduction was a lot more similar to Jag's in '07 than to Spaz's in '09.

I like the guy and I'm going to get behind him and the team. He could be a disaster as so many are predicting, but what choice do we have but to get behind him and wish him the best? The alternative is just to give up on BC football completely and I am not willing to do that.

  17. He was away from the mic when he talked about the defense. Did anyone catch his defensive philosophy? I thought he said "we are going to bend but not break," but then I heard the word "aggressive." I'm hoping he said he does not believe in bend don't break and wants to be aggressive.

  18. eagle boston -- well said. at least this guy wants to be here and will give it his all, two things i never felt with Spaz.

i'm on board the BJK Optimism Train and will see what happens.

  19. Bill,

Congrats on the prediction finally coming true!

Let's go Coach Addazio! Win, the BC way.

  20. He nailed his first assignment as the BC coach. I love the enthusiasm, as it has been sorely lacking around the team in recent years.

It is great to hear him talking about championships. Spaz would never have dreamed of such talk. I can't wait to see what kind of recruits he can grab between now and signing day.

  21. The whole process was a joke and so is this clown. Spare me the entusiasm crap, the guy is a pitiful coach ask Florida fans and Temple fans. How can anyone be happy with this hire? We needed innovation not enthusiasm!

  22. It's official. The BC administration and BoT do not want championship-level big-time college football.

  23. I understand the desire to feel some kind of excitement and optimism at this point. I really do. But this man is a complete and total clown. I feel infinitely worse after watching this press conference than I did before. Name dropping and calling your new gig your dream job do not make you competent, or a good hire. Bates really screwed us with this one.

  24. You are clowns!! You know nothing, but act like you do. You remind me of the callers to talk radio sports shows that always are screaming about trade for this guy or that guy, without having a clue about whether it has been tried or is even possible. Clowns.

  25. My God, I hope you people don't have sales jobs. What a bunch of negative Nancys!

What more do you want in a press conference? He said the right things, he was pumped (unlike Spaz), he has a vision for the program. He mentioned not just ACC championships but national championships. He wants the team to be a family. He wants to get alumni and faculty involved.

Get behind this guy or get the hell out. What is the point of all the bitching anyway? Do you think Bates is going to turn around and say "Geez, Fr. Leahy, I spoke to former BC players, NFL people, college coaches but the social media crowd is just not behind this guy. I want to fire him and start the process over so all of the Twitter and blogging alumni will be on board with this." Ain't gonna happen. For better or worse, he is our guy. You had 24 hours to bitch. Now it is time to stop!

  26. At least he beat Army.

  27. If you can get your hands on the Temple Louisville game this season you will see Addazio go absolutely nuclear on the sidelines at the refs on multiple occasions. The "get-back-coach" was literally holding him back.

He needs to be a psycho during practice and in the locker room but tighten it up on the sidelines during the games.

Enthusiasm and desire to be successful are important and have been uterly lacking the last four years. At least this guy will give 100%.

  28. I love colin cowherd and one of his favorites is to say things out loud to find out if it is a god idea! Say this out loud, I am really happy that we hired the Temple football coach who was 4-7 last year. Say that a couple of times out loud before you call me a clown!

  29. People on this comment thread (and on the message boards in general) need to take a deep breath and chill out.

He hasn't coached a game yet.

If our offense clicks under Ryan Day and the team starts playing well, does it really matter that we hired back Day/Rogers and have Addazio as head coach? I hope this guy coaches his tail off, is very successful and all these whining BC fans can eat a big plate of crow.

I understand the anger in hiring back some of the coaches from the Spaz Era ... the problem with those teams was probably something more inherent with Spaz himself than anything else.

  30. As a BC Alum and Temple Alum, Did anything run by Temple's Offense last year scream innovation and effectiveness to result in a 4-7 record against their competition? And someone posted yesterday that "why were we to assume the same coaches would be back?" C'mom. Please. This is a joke.

  31. My uber Top Secret GLG20 sources told me that the interview consisted of a set of three questions.

    1) You coached at Florida? You mean, THE Florida? The one in the SEC? And you once spoke with Urban Meyer? THE Urban meyer? You know, there was a Pope named Urban. Perfect.

    2) Is your Wikipedia page true? Did you in fact crush the Future Tank Commanders at Army this year with one of BC's best (ex) RBs getting 7 TDs and 350 yds? Now that's the Cirle of Life, Simba!

    3) Fr. Leahy wants to know when the last time it was that you went to Confession?

Improve the OLine, trade for Yeldon at Alabama for a few of those rare Irish books to double the stack size at the UA library, and incorporate a few D linemen back into the defensive playbook. I think that's what they're called, right? "Defensive linemen." Tell them the chicks at BC love them some penetrators.

  32. ct, you are at the top of the jerk poster list. Totally without class or humor.

  33. He wants you to say that.

He gets off on it like it is the Fathead of Jim Calhoun he has hanging over his racecar bed

  34. I liked the GLG20 reference. Spies like Us is a vastly under appreciated flick.
