What we can learn from the Petrula commitment

Aside from the Spring Game, the weekend also brought good recruiting news. New Jersey OL prospect Ben Petrula verballed on Saturday. The New Jersey media interviewed him and looked into his recruiting. It sheds a little light on how BC works.

Location is always important in recruiting. Most guys stay near their homes. That is why New Jersey remains so important. Petrula had other offers in the Big Ten and SEC but he wanted to stay in the northeast. It came down to BC and Rutgers. Fortunately we won and have put more New Jersey recruiters on staff.

Players recruiting other players is often overlooked. Petrula also mentioned the other St. Peter's players at BC. That is why we need to spend so much time recruiting kids who get what BC is about...and then we need those kids to sell that idea and perpetuate that culture.

Addazio getting in the mix also closed Petrula. Other BC coaches used to be the "closer" in the recruiting process and sell the kid when he was in the office. Addazio is getting out on the field and working with them. This gives him a chance to evaluate the player but it also gives them a chance to know him.

There are plenty of things Addazio needs to work on, but based on the Petrula courtship, recruiting doesn't seem to be one of them.

  1. how soon until Mod 34B's whiny comment about how Addazio stinks? 3 hours? that he lampoons the offer list of Petrula? "what, no offers from Alabama or Florida State? this guy must stink worse than Addazio! 14/14 in ACC rushing yards on 3rd and 8, 13/14 on PATs in the 2nd quarter."

good commit. this guy is 6'5 320 pound high school junior. lots of Taylor Ham.

    GO EAGLES

    1. Once again, what your saying is totally incorrect, but let's not let the facts get in the way. Man thank god for last season so you can continue to push your agenda. Keep ignoring BCs glaring recruiting deficiencies and only reading eagle actions rankings to base your BS rants. What your saying holds true for the '16 class, off of a 3 win season, that's it.

Im sure when Petrula gets drafted you'll go on a rant about how it wasn't Addazio who develops him into an NFL player just like you said with the current crop of draft picks and how only Don Brown turned them into NFL players.

  6. Lots of good players in Jersey, always has been. Not surprisingly, tough competition for those players. Paterno owned it. Good to see we were able to stick our nose in there and get a good one. The New Jersey guys on staff had to help, let's hope they keep it up.

  7. Mod is spot-on correct. Until Daz starts landing a bigger chunk of three star recruits (and a better field general.), BC will continue to be the dormat of the ACC.

  8. MIZ

W/ a name like Petrula it's more likely Sunday gravy, maybe Daz gave his Mom his family's secret recipe. Foughedaboutit!

  9. Good get - need to get back to our roots - tough working class kids from big urban Catholic High Schools who play against good competition. No more ISL rich kids or kids from other tiny private schools who haven't seen competition.

  10. lol Mod's reactions are usually pretty predictable

seems like he is a good get and someone we can be happy about.

However, i think the line "There are plenty of things Addazio needs to work on, but based on the Petrula courtship, recruiting doesn't seem to be one of them." - is too far in the other direction.

  12. Mod - sorry, i couldn't help myself. it does get tiresome to read an ATL post about whatever slight good news there may be about the team, followed immediately by the first comment from you that is wholly pessimistic and "supported" by cherry-picked stats about how badly we stink.

this is a good commit - not only a good player, but from an NJ powerhouse (Hilliman and Callinan both went there) and one that was influenced by Addazio's coaching hire, Campanile. steps in the right direction. wait, let me guess, Addazio doesn't get credit for hiring Campanile - he probably found out about the staff opening from a job board and Addazio had nothing to do with it.

am i not "sticking to football" by posting about the football team?

  15. Miz, in mod's defense, the stats aren't cherry-picked at all. Rather, they are some of the biggest stats that matter when it comes to assessing Daz's recruiting efforts 9W/L record is also a biggie which Daz has utterly failed at). Also, Atleagle's assertion that recruiting isn't a problem for Daz is probably further from the truth than mod's assertion that Daz is a bottom 3 P5 recruiter.

  16. Two things: i think Mod meant to say that Miz should stick to basketball. I guess that constitutes constructive criticism from the football expert.

I like Miz's bball posts. If only he would criticize Christian in EVERY post he might garner someone's undying affection. Damn complete rebuilds.

Second, the popular drive home sports talk radio show today has a segment every hour about college football. The first one today ripped BC's 6-2 Spring game score after noting that no offensive pts were scored. The host said Daz must be the most optimistic guy in the country given his exuberant post-game quotes. Said Loeffler was a terrible hire and should be watching football, not coaching it. Ouch. Slso said gTech must be thrilled to open up against us. Just a total rip job.

We got mentioned on Atlanta sports talk radio! I can't tell you how rare that is. We should all take some pride on this great day.

  17. The mention was a byproduct of the SEC connection wrt Towles and Loeffler.

On a Tuesday in mid-April. Gotta love it.

  20. ESPN classics just had the 2007 Champs Sports Bowl from Orlando with Matt Ryan, Jags, and the bois against Michigan State. Rich Gunnell was the star on offense and Mark Herzlich was the star on defense. Actually, the points by Mike Patrick and Todd Blackledge were that Ryan carried a team which was essentially mediocre. There was plenty of enthusiasm and Jags "was the man".

  21. Jamie Silva saved our asses in that bowl game -- and went on to be named a consensus all-America safety.
