Confusion at Bosco and other links

One of the most important pipelines for BC Football is in a bit of a shakeup. Last week it was announced that long-time Don Bosco Head Coach Greg Toal Sr was out at the New Jersey power. The initial announcement framed it as voluntary and a retirement. Based on this article and Toal's continued and purposeful silence, it seems like there is more to the story. Toal is promising his former players he will speak this week. Future Eagle Marcus Valdez was one of the players rallying around Toal. As for why this matters to BC...Toal is the father of two former players and has sent dozens of players from the school to BC. Having him serve as an advocate for BC has always been an asset to our New Jersey efforts.

Former WZBC guy Mike Gualtieri has a podcast and has interviewed a few BC-related people like Meter and Luke Russert.

BC Baseball is off to a bit of a rough start. Bethune-Cookman swept them this weekend. Softball lost to Drake Sunday but is off to a much better start.

The Women's Ice Hockey team finished their regular season with a win over Providence.

  1. Baseball lost to whom??? And are you implying a vital recruiting pipeline may have just dried up? Can things get much worse?

  2. i think Toal openly supported Trump and was silenced by the big Jessy in Rome. :-)

  3. Bethune-Cookman, come on now. As for the "big Jessy", interesting comment.

  4. Baseball is off the anrousing start. Didn't even know Bethune Cookman had sports teams. This could be quite the stellar year in BC athletics.

  5. If I had to guess, it sounds like he retired due to health reasons. Maybe he was diagnosed with a terminal illness and doesn't wish to speak about it at this time. I hope I'm wrong but that's what it sounds like.

  8. Bosco alumnus here... In 2011, a year after I graduated, Bosco replaced its popular Salesian president with another, more authoritative president. My two younger brothers who were still attending Bosco at the time remarked a dramatic culture shift at Bosco once this new president came along. Much like Father Leahy, father Jim heuser does not believe in athletics and view them as a distraction from academics. During my 4 years at Bosco, the football team only lost 1 football game under Toal and was unanimously ranked #1 in the nation, and #1 again 2 years later. Word around Bosco is that Heuser let Toal go due to his recruiting practices at Bosco. Very sad times to be an Ironman, as this all but ensures that Bosco's dynasty has ended.

  10. BC-2014, I'm sorry to hear about the Coach Toal situation at Bosco. Toal was a no nonsense tough guy who was probably much too strong for the new president. And heaven forbid - the guy was known to curse and swear.

I don't know his age,but maybe Toal is not done yet.

What these presidents have to understand is that they need parents to believe their kids will be getting their money's worth with the high, school tuition. Without athletic success, Bosco is just another high priced school that will be easier to steer away from.

I'm glad that my high school is consistently competitive in all sports. That's a conscious decision by the school to be in the headlines in a positive way.

I'm staying tuned for news on the Toal matter.

  11. BC football ought to hire Toal. Put him as Special Teams coach. The more winners on the staff the better.

  12. Who cares about baseball. Last season was awesome. It is not sustainable.

I especially liked the way they took Miami on at the end of the last game last season.
