Nuggets from the Athlon Preview

I picked up my Athlon College Football Preview and they're not too high on BC. The magazine picks BC to finish last in the division, go 5-7 (2-6 in ACC again) and out of a bowl. Overall they consider BC 70th. I am not really outraged or frustrated. Just resigned to our place until Addazio proves otherwise.

Athlon always quotes an anonymous coach about each team. Often times it can get catty. No so with BC this year. Here is what one ACC assistant said, "They just don't have the same kind of skill players that the other schools in the league have, but they're very sound in what they do."

The Athlon preview online also ranks the all-time best college football players of the Athlon era. Flutie only came in a No. 49. That is a big disservice and shows lack of perspective. Flutie's stats look small time now, but his offense helped change college football.

Our current QB was ranked 105 among all starters entering the season.

  1. There is an obvious answer. Jack Bicknell, Tom Coughlin , Tom O'Brien . Great coaches
running the show. No one would mistake Spazdazio as less than mediocre.

  2. I am sick of being picked last.

  3. John, it stinks being picked last but it's even worse actually finishing last. If we do finish 5-7 (2-6 in the conference), that would probably be enough to end the Addazio era. He would leave a legacy of 3 bowl games in 5 years because, well, almost everyone goes to bowl games now and because of cupcakes to fatten the record. Our conference record in football and basketball is beyond inept.

  4. The schedule is a bit more challenging versus last year so 7-5 or better shows progress and Daz will be safe. With new AD 5-7 won't cut it and Daz will be toast. My hope is 7-5 or better with a signature win against ND. My fear is 6-6...which puts us in purgatory and prolongs the agony.

  5. While we could lose most of our ACC games (hope not), we could win half of them + potentially.

The difference between 7 and 5 and 5 and 7 might well be at UVA and at Syracuse.

We might be due for a big upset when ND comes in for an early noon game. It's like rolling in a long birdie putt to salt away a golf match. No one expects it, but it happens now and again.

Obviously, we have to win the first game. We once rolled Texas A&M on their field on the first game, now we are sweating Northern Illinois.(BC 28 NIU 27).

    Go BC

  7. I find the narrative about Notre Dame being a heavyweight to be amusing. They are a mediocre program at best and we're here saying that a win would be like "rolling a long birdie putt".

You can talk about Florida State, Clemson and even Louisville being juggernauts, but the Notre Dame program is at about the same level as Virginia Tech. In other words, they are pretty average.

Enough of the ND talk. Move on to something else...

  8. I agree 6-6 is a worse case scenario. It simply prolongs the agony of Daz for another year.

  9. How's this - we could prevail over Virginia Tech for a 9 and 3 season.

    Go BC.

  10. The Athlon news is shocking. How dare they rank BC's QB last in the ACC and rank the head coach last in the ACC. This is actionable defamation. This is obviously fake news. The Russians must own that magazine.

  11. John, I like that! Well done!

  12. Everything in this posts sucks.

How many times have we been underrated in the preseason(rhetorical)? Unfortunately, this preseason prediction is correct . . . we are only getting 5 wins.

I could write a dissertation on Doug Flutie being underrated at 49. Doug Flutie personifies what it is to be a winner. Probably written by an under 30, stat-clown with a warped methodology(if he has one at all).

  13. VT is not average. Fuente is a great coach. They are top 15 year in again.

  14. Still a disaster at QB.

    AD vital. Flynn - Gladchuk

  15. The coaches are catty about other coaching staffs that they view to be threatening. They are uniformly complimentary of people like Daz and Spaz because they want them to stay around, forever.

At what, exactly, was BC sound last year? Not the run game, which was awful. Not the passing game, which was literally the worst of any major conference team. Not our defense, which was absolutely decimated by any decent offense. And certainly not the gameday coaching or management, at which we were worse than a 5 year-old playing Madden for the first time.

So, all in all, not quite sound.

  16. Well. If we were horrible across the board then how did we get 7 wins?

Part of our problem is that we have to play 3-4 teams with top 10 talent: Clemson, FSu, louisville.

You have to look at BC vs comparable opponents. Like I have been saying for years. Of we are beating Syracuse, Wake, UConn, UVa and nc state then we are doing well. You cannot realistically expect us to hang with FSU/Clemson/Louisville/ND every year.

I understand the high expectations mentality and I want to beat everyone but it isn't realistic.

    1. You are looking thru rose colored glasses and I am. Ring nice. Play the game and take the win or loss. Stopbfm making excuses and what if sceneraios. Invite reality into your life. Until BC gets serious again and demonstrates some competence we will. E left with beating patsies and getting blown out by schools that know what they are doing.

I fear BC has become snowflake heaven.

      I miss Bicknell and Coughlin

  17. Not defending the coaches. I am defending the program.

  18. knucklehead - BC vs. comparable opponents IE the ACC is 10-22.

we have hung with FSU and Clemson and Louisville plenty of times in the past few years, and gotten rolled by them a couple of times as well. but all in all, there are some heavyweights and some lightweights and some middleweights, and BC is 10-22 against the lot of em. NG. not great.

  19. We won 7 games by beating patsies barely above Junior college level. This year will be a more realistic test.

  20. Ha. It's called the SEC knuckle. You are funny.

  21. You cannot take away the storied past from BC. Actually, Frank Leahy took them to a national championship in 1940. The time period had more important things on its mind.----No matter what, the Lebanese magician will always be "one shining star". The left footed Jewish kid put one in the bread basket of "touchdown Jesus". I would say that those three events are the highlights of greatness.-----Since Tom Coughlin, BC has been run by mental midgets. Ever to Excel has turned into "all quiet on the eastern front". John Milton "On His Blindness Said it Best". They also serve who only stand and wait.-----There are plenty waiting to storm the field. When BC won in '93, the students stormed the field at Chestnut Hill and tore down the goal posts. It is time to storm the Bastille. ---- You have to ask just what is wrong with William Patrick Leahy. The red headed president was in the forefront of positive change at the beginning of his tenure. Now, he has turned into just one more pseudo Irishman who dreams of being a leprechaun.

  23. No the MIZ. You entirely missed the point. You are countering me with a point that has nothing to do with what I wrote. Coo-coo.

Very simply again. I am talking about comparable opponents. FSU, Clemson, Louisville are not comparable. Against UCONN, Syracuse, Wake, and NC State the last 4 years . . .

    2013 3-1
    2014 3-0
    2015 0-3
    2016 3-1

9-5. This is the reason Dazzler still has the BC HC job.
