Down goes Duke

A few days ago -- when the Hawkins news became official -- it seemed like BC's basketball season was over before it even started. Clearly the team wasn't ready to give up. BC upset No. 1 Duke Saturday for the biggest win of the Christian era. Bowman led BC with 30 points, while Robinson went 5-5 from downtown.

Aside from the boost of confidence and respect this win provides, I think the biggest takeaway was the environment. Conte sold out and was loud. Students stormed the court after the win and BC started trending in social media. BC Basketball has become an afterthought and dismissed by our casual fans. A few big wins and a little excitement might get those casual fans back on the bandwagon. This could be a program defining win or just a fluky upset. It will really depend and how Christian and Co. handle the rest of the season.

In easily the most unexpected upset of the season, unranked Boston College handed No. 1 Syracuse its first loss of the season, beating the Orange 62-59 in overtime at the Carrier Dome Wednesday night.

BC fired Donahue Tuesday with two years remaining on his six-year contract after he went 54-76 over a protracted four-year struggle in the ACC. Last Thursday, Sports Illustrated reported Donahue was returning for a fifth season.

This was a great team win with reassuringly significant contributions from many players.

The desire to not let this one slip away, even when Duke snuck ahead by 3, could help shape the narrative of this season. BC has always been able to play 20 minutes with the opponent, but once they opposition made adjustments, everything would fall apart. Only twice in the last 16 minutes did they fail to get into the offensive play call, and that is against Duke, who typically pressures BC into mistakes early and often. Persevered the foul trouble. Duke was complacent from range, never really worked the soft, shallow interior.

It's a flukey win over a team that had pulled a few horseshoes out the past couple weeks and was vulnerable. ACC is top heavy, but 7 wins is probably ceiling. If somehow they exceed that, I think Christian buys himself another season.

the difference is that Christian has done decently in recruiting. Donahue was recruiting Ivy type prospects and losing even some of those recruiting battles to smaller/lesser programs.

CONGRATS to team and coach Christian. HE still needs to prove he can recruit.
We can't count on a majority of three nigths like this.
Turn Popovic over to Danya he has got to to get 15-16 even in games like this and a dozen
boards.

The officiating was shameful. How many times did poor Coach K have to pull the referee over to have a word? When Coach K has to address the officials for THEIR mistakes in failing to respect Duke sufficiently, it costs Coach K time that could be used identifying tactical adjustments. So Duke loses out not just on calls they expect in accordance with their pedigree, but they also lose out on the time Coach K would be spending to fulfill his desire to make each Blue Devil the best player and person he can be. Huge unexpected obstacle for the Coach K’sters.

Unfairly even officiating also distracts the players. How many times did poor Grayson turn to the referee with an exasperated open-mouthed stare as the referee failed to reward a well-executed flop? How does Grayson wind up with a black eye and not one Eagle gets ejected? Can you imagine how depressing it is to keep playing Bowman through the game? How can the officials miss his spray-painted hair and fail to call that ticky-tack fifth? Imagine playing your career with the other team getting called for breathing on you, and now you’re playing against Boston College and ACC officials won’t DQ Bowman or Robinson or Chatman or even Popovic!!????

This game was a fluke. It came during exams, and even the officials were distracted with the Christmas season and forgot to protect Coach K’s ranking. You know, it happens. I just hope the ACC gets its act together and remembers who butters their bread.

Why would you turn off the lights and put a damper on enthusiasm?

Another beauty, OC - you crack me up.

Coach K actually said some good things after the game.

obviously this was a totally unexpected win. BC played a gutsy game and deservedly won. With this in mind i am proceeding cautiously with what this win means. I am not going to fall into the trap of thinking this will springboard BC into some huge winning streak. I feel that this win is confidence builder and should produce some wins that maybe BC might have lost we'll have to wait and see. On the other hand, I hope the Duke loss doesn't expose them as a not so unbeatable team and ends up exposing them as overrated thus taking away some the luster of the win. Let them continue winning at a high level. I totally enjoyed the win for what it was a big win over a highly ranked team.

When the better team mounted their second half run last year, the Eagles were unable to respond.

Today was different and it was great to see. And that marks some progress that we can enjoy.

This team is different and trying hard. The players deserve support.

One of the greatest enthusiasm stories I have ever heard of was associated with the big upset in 1993 when David Gordon, the left footed wonder, kicked the winning field goal into the bread basket of TD Jesus. The BC student body stormed the field and tore down the goal posts. The game was in South Bend and the goal posts were in Chestnut Hill.---Thanks BJK

Watching this game was a blast. It was very refreshing to see bc hit all the free throws at the end to ice it. I doubt anyone saw bc winning this and turning an assumed loss into a big win. Let's enjoy a big win early in the season and it's optimism. Bowman looked unreal, 1 assist away from a triple double.

I am not a huge fan of Christian, but I think the proof is in the pudding as far as his recruiting goes. Bowman and Robinson are proven finds and Mitchell looks like he can be the real thing as well. Chatman and Hawkins were both decent grad transfers as well, despite the injury we saw that he could play. I think he needs to keep up the recruiting pace and win with the guys he has, but I do feel better about the direction of the program than at any other time since he took the reins.

And to answer an earlier question: they didn't shut the lights off, they did this weird strobe/spotlight thing that they also do when the hockey team scores. The overhead lights go dark but the spotlights scan the crowd. The kids get into it...it's good.

Chatman's and Robinson's foul shooting at the end was terrific. Extremely surprising and extremely enjoyable.

At one point in the second half the fouls were 8 on BC 2 on Duke. Duke was in the bonus with 16 to go, nice analysis of the officiating, Grayson Allen is a cheap shot artist, that is why he will never get calls, I think his history is pretty well established. Nothing like letting the facts get in the way of a good argument

Lenny - I don't know about the gray and the skyline.

John, do you honestly believe New Englanders will ever get behind BC football?

bceagle91 said...

GE, I've been a fan since the late 70s. It hasn't happened in that time, so why any time soon? There was obviously a spike in the Flutie years (reporters used to call following the team "Flutie duty"), but has often been noted here, Boston is a pro sports town.

Geezer eagle said...

I hear you. Complete opposite down here in GA where college football rules. New Englanders don't know what they are missing. College football is much more exciting than the pros.

John said...

Also let's remember that Pro Football was on strike most of one season while Flutie was capturing hearts and minds. That helped.

But to stop trying for fans to consider BC simply because Boston is a "pro sports town" is not right.

So whatever can be done to slowly get BC a seat at the table, so to speak, is fine with me.

Winning of course! But a welcoming atmosphere to campus, competitive pricing, game time experience, etc. - great value for the $, big time opponents, etc. I have always believed that broader support could be achieved with the right approach.

The Fenway Sports Group sure was/is not the answer. Pitiful performance, just like Gene DeFil(one l for loser)ipp(two P's for piss poor [as Mod would say])o's performance.

Knucklehead said...

Gene couldn't hire a coach to save his career. I would rather be in the ACC with $$ coming in each year than panhandling in the American conference. So like everything else Mod says it is a warped mischaracterization. One P for poor. The piss is an overstatement. Looking back of course.
