The BC Men lost their Beanpot Opener last week and I didn't even mention it. Excuses, excuses...young team, Beanpot means nothing...we've heard it all before. I was ready to move on to something else. But then they went and
lost the 3rd place game to Harvard in OT. Now a forgettable Beanpot becomes one you want to forget. They can start putting this behind them Thursday against UMass.
Very disappointing. I expect more from the Hockey program. To think the only other time we finished last in back to back seasons was 74-75. Even due to the legit reasons for why we are not very good, I just do not see how we finish last. Right now the only way to the NCAA is to win the Hockey East Tourney and that is not going to happen. But I trust Jerry. Congrats to NU.

ReplyDeleteHaving to endure years of misery and embarrassment with bc football and basketball, I could always look to the hockey team with pride and confidence. Now even they are losers. What the hell happened?
ReplyDeleteWe are recruiting a different kind of player now and a lot of these guys only stay around for a year or two, it seems to me (from a distance).
ReplyDeleteLet's get back to the 4 year guys with the occasional Johnny G type guy (I think he left after 3?).

ReplyDeleteThe team's out of conference record is brutal (Hockey East is having a down year), but the team is atop the conference standings. It's a tight race and there are no real powers in the conference this year, but they're far from awful. There are 6 frosh and 12 sophomores on the team. Just 4 juniors and one senior who may be a walk-on. I think we had 7 kids leave early to go pro. We should see a better team next year.

ReplyDeleteIt is a fine line between being the "Elite" of the conference and being an also - ran. You can not make TOO many mistakes when recruiting . You must have the ability to ascertain which talent is on the rise and which young kids have basically already peaked or reached their plateau. I agree with Tim in his prior post that Cavanaugh seemed to recognize talent on a consistent basis. He started from "Scratch" at UConn , but appears to be slowly building that program in a positive direction. In my humble opinion , it appears that BC is searching too often on small forwards that will become the next Giontas , Gerbes ,or a Johnny Gaudreau. I doubt that they will make the NCAA 's.
ReplyDeleteGuido, you're probably right. Based on the PairWise rankings, we're 23rd and only 16 teams make it. Our only shot is to get the automatic berth for winning the conference tournament. It's doable, but it won't be easy. Alex Tuch and Miles Wood were both power forwards that Jerry recruited. They played a combined 3 seasons before going pro.
ReplyDeleteIt's refreshing to see an entire column dedicated to ice hockey. I hope BC regains it's prominence next year. I'm tired of BC sports being mediocre to outright pitiful.

ReplyDeleteWe have heard the BC is too young and will be better next year for the past 3 years or so. Seems like they keep getting worse every year.
