The Christian extension is predictable and frustrating

According to reports, BC extended Jim Christian's contract through the 2021-22 season. This is adds two years to his current deal. BC did not release any information nor are any of the details of the deal known. Ever since the team made the NIT, there has been speculation about an extension for Christian. It comes with the territory as I am sure Christian and his agent said it was needed for recruiting. That part I get.

What frustrates me is that even with the improvement this year, Christian has yet to prove that he has built anything sustainable. We don't know if this year was a fluke. We don't know how good they will be without Robinson (and potentially Bowman). So BC is spending money on a losing coach with the hope that he can win consistently. While the recruiting has been better, results on the court matter more.

My hope is that BC didn't penalize itself with aspects of the extension. Because other than recruiting, there is no need to spend more money on Christian until we know where the program is headed.

  1. If he pans next year he gets canned regardless of a new contract. I don’t think this changes anything. Just gives recruits comfort that he’ll be there until he literally isn’t

  3. My sense is that this was mostly a PR move. Can’t imagine that Jarmond guaranteed the contract given the past track record. To be sure there is a better feeling of hope but if results don’t come then Christian will be let go. My guess is that there is a reasonably high but affordable buyout clause in the extension that works for both parties. If Christian wins none us will have to worry about the fine print.

  4. Can't imagine either STL - but not sure whether there is typically any fine print in these coaching contracts that protects the school and is tied to mediocre or poor W-L performance (i.e., as opposed to ethical or rules violations). If anyone has a sense of that - please chime in.

  5. Regardless of the extension. The talent level/caliber of the players in both football and basketball has improved the last 2 years.

Christian with Spinelli is a decent combo. They are building slowly.

Problem for BC is that they are not going to fire a coach and bring someone on who will turn program around quick - pay player/overwork the transfer market.

Last season was competitive hoops haven't had that in 10 years. Cannot let the contract expires.

They may have gotten word on the draft situation for Robinson and the Red Head, too. Those decisions are being made public soon.

  6. There are two choices
    1) A Genius Coach Problem Have to Pay Big Bucks

    2) Devoted to BC able to RECRUIT Big Time
    Dudley ,Abrams , Eisley

AT THE VERY LEAST Danya should be added to Christians coaches to work
    with big men and recruit.
    GO BC

  9. Read Mayocks mock draft and Landry comment.

Exactly what I said about him 2 weeks ago.

  10. I will take consistent mediocrity for a couple seasons. The previous 10 were an embarrassment.

I think 2 of the 3 Robinson, the Red Head and the Illinois ST guy are coming back. Along with the prep school kid and his brother.

    Decent mix.

  12. The second line has no precursor. Total pulled from thin air. Never at any point did anyone or anything intimate what you say in the second line.

All that is is a statement of your expectations not the schools expectations or what Jarmond said he was going to do.

He has no experience hiring at this level. That is actually the knock on him from the beginning.

    Christ.

  13. What exactly astute thing did you say two weeks ago? Do remind me. You’d think I would remember such a rare occurrence.

  14. About five years ago, there was a chance to land Jay Wright. He wanted more money than offered. BC refused to negotiate. Bates made a huge mistake.

  18. NYC, make the tournament next year? Like we did in the NIT and got knocked out in the first round with a mediocre coach and team? Except for Mod, everyone of you are content with mediocrity in our sports programs. Christian, like Dazoshit, should never, NEVER, have been given extensions. Jesus H Christ !

  19. He inherited a team with 9! Count them, 9! Scholarships available. He had a team of non D-1 level players because of Donahue. He’s recruited damn well considefing what he started with. Open your eyes, BC made a significant leap this year

  20. You think there’s any team on Tobacco Road who wouldn’t take Robinson or Bowman now? Was BC getting any kids like that since early Skinner?

  21. Two blue-chip players in five years and I'm supposed to be impressed?
