A fresh look at bias and regions in recruiting

BC fans (including me) have long criticized the recruiting services for their biases and flaws in their evaluation. But our anecdotal examples of BC diamonds in the rough aren't enough to say the system is deeply flawed. But Football Study Hall did a fascinating breakdown of regional talent and how it later converts to the NFL. Long story short, the south has more talent depth, but they also have the region where the most recruits fail to live up to their respective hype. Take a look at the map below. The red state represent overrated talent while the blue represent the states where the talent is more likely to over perform (in college and the NFL).

What's interesting is that Massachusetts is one of the rare northern states that is not blue. What that means is that the local talent tends to be a little overrated. The good news is that New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are all underrated regions. I don't think BC should abandon the southern states just because the talent may not develop to the expectations, but I think this map reinforces the general belief that our region has underrated talent.

  1. Great article. The New Jersey Catholic school league in particular absolutely pumps out talent, but doesn’t seem to get the same respect as Texas, Cali, and the general southeast

  2. We need to put a fence around Montana and Delaware.

  3. Exactly right. Thank god for that or we would be as relevant as Holy Cross. And we are barely relevant now. We need underrated talent and good kids with work ethic. That’s the special sauce. Maybe an innovative approach to play calling wouldn’t hurt.

  6. All that matters is that Daz is 31-33 overall and 15-25 in conference at BC. Recruiting is filler during the long offseason. Sure BC recruits are underrated and Alabama’s are probably overrated but they win and we don’t.

  7. All of BC's football fortunes are now resolved. Mattie Ice just signed a five year extension for 150 million with 100 million guaranteed. He will buy the stadium and the football athletic building. He will put up a statue of Frank Leahy and ask for the resignation of the other outdated Irish priest.---He will then have a nationwide search to find the greatest coach since Knute Rockne. He will use his interest payments, tee shirt sales, and investments to create a fund for paying the new wunderkind. His BC basketball playmaker wife will be the liason who will set straight the Jesuit socialists on campus. His twin boys will be offered scholarships on the spot even though they are not even six months old.---Capitalism has its benefits and Mattie should make the most of it. He would then send the "redistribution of wealth" Title IX crowd to Argentina where they will find a home even if it is a hovel in the seedy part of town. Finally, he will stop dead in its tracks the current secret architectural redesign of the BC campus. The leveling of the Heights as part of a new socialist conspiracy with the blessing of Mayor Walsh will now come to an end.

  14. Just curious: if a region, like the south, has high rated talent depth but also routinely has high rate of under performance, then doesn't that equate to being routinely "over rated"?
