It got a decent amount of attention and led to many people complimenting Addazio on his talent identification and development. He does deserve credit and it has been one of the things he's delivered on. But the tweet is a backhanded compliment since it also points out that despite the influx of talent, BC's record under Addazio is still under .500. He's building a pipeline that develops talent at a better rate than Texas -- at a private school in Boston -- yet is not winning at a high rate. If Addazio doesn't break through his ceiling soon, most of this will be for naught. Talent is primary and should win out in most cases. If you have talent and are not winning then you have to question how your coaches are managing the talent when it counts.

ReplyDeleteGreat salesman and good evaluator of talent but a horrible game manager. Let's also not forget the Don Brown influence on the defense. His stint at BC proves that Daz is better as a talking head on ESPN, a scout or a coordinator but not a head coach.

Could the isolated observation provided by Hidden Agenda also be interpreted (on limited evidence) to mean that the rating services often assign 4-5 stars to players who aren't and fewer stars to players who are ... ? Just asking because, honestly, I do not know how that whole system works.

ReplyDeleteThis was put out by the manbun AD at Iowa State, I bet. A shot at Texas with a backhanded compliment to BC stirred in. Put us on the field with any Big 12 team and we rock them.
ReplyDeleteAsk Texas why they won't play us anymore. 1971. The chatter on the post about small school in Boston shows ignorance of the past(1971) and the guardrails BC has in place that Texas does not. If BC were open to everyone and everything like Texas it would be top 10 at everything. Playboy had BC ranked as a top party school at one point. We could have top 20 football and basketball program in 24 hours but the kids have to go to school and aren't given coke and hookers by assistant coaches.

The backhanded compliment is not about Addazio having a poor record. It is a shot saying that even BC is better than Texas as recruiting and producing NFL players. . . Even the doormat is better than Texas. Hipster from Iowa State definitely put this out there.
I think you’re all missing the point. The overarching point is complimentary of BC. David Hale is the ESPN writer covering the ACC and he is very high on our team this year. You should check the rest of that thread for more confirmation on that. He had 5 BC related tweets in a row. The point he’s trying to make is 2 fold. 1 BC does an exceptional job at finding and developing unheralded high school recruits. 2 for whatever reason high school players in Texas consistently receive higher ratings from recruiting services than high school players from the NorthEast, where BC recruits. None of this was intended to mock BC.

ReplyDeleteHe has BC as one of his ten locks for over/unders. He is very confident we exceed 6.5 wins. He also did a positional breakdown for each team in the ACC and based on that analysis he has BC as the third most talented team, on paper. Listened to a podcast last week in which he had to ask himself why people weren’t giving BC more of a shot to win the Atlantic based on their roster. Ultimately comes down to question marks at the QB1
ReplyDeleteI didnt realize it came from Hale. Agreed, he is not one to take a shot at BC for no reason.
ReplyDeleteOn the AP Top 25 college football podcast, Hale projected BC as a team that could win nine or 10 games. I believe he said BC had the top RB, OL, and secondary units in the conference. He acknowledged that the back end of the schedule is tough, but the home games against Clemson and Miami put BC in a position to make some noise. He also believes Dillon will be in New York for the Heisman ceremony (though not winning the award).

It would be nice to see an aggressive mindset this season.
ReplyDeleteI expect UMass to be a pretty good test out of the box, but we should overwhelm them as the game goes on.
Holy Cross can allow us to use a bunch of players for experience building.
At Wake Forest on the next Thursday night, September 13th - this is a big game and they have a very strong, experienced team.
That being said, I'd like to see us hang 45 to 50 on them this year, both for payback and because we can!!!!
Same thing at Purdue the next week, Saturday September 22nd.
Win both of these games, and we're on our way to make some noise this year.
But we have to believe, we have to be aggressive and we need to score!!!!!
We scored a measly 10 points against WF last year at home. This is a whole different deal this year - let's pound them in Winston Salem, even during a short week.
And we need to send a message to Purdue in the Big 10 West. They are very good as well, but we have our own experienced players, and we need to score early and often.
We can talk about the defense later.
Go BC - today and tomorrow - no looking back. Those games and seasons are GONE. You guys are special this year and beyond. :-)
Big jack, you forget one intangible - we have Daz. His uninmaginative, ultra-conservative play calling could easily cost us the Wake Forest and Perdue games

ReplyDeleteWe can only hope that the mid-year coaching changes and change in attitude are the new normal. If so, they should beat Wake and Purdue as they simply have more talent. Temple is not good.
ReplyDeleteTalk about spin! Atl's analysis of Hale's data resulted in a conclusion that the data doesn't warrant at all. Fact:Both schools have had mediocre records, Texas with recruits reputed to be better than BC's. Rather than a complement to BC, it could be viewed either as an indictment of Texas coaching, OR the faults of recruitment ratings system. Beyond that, all else is spin.
