Checking in on the coaching class of 2013

With Colorado making a change, the list of coaches hired in the 2013 cycle still with their team is that much smaller. Here is the latest.

Left for a new job
Gary Andersen, Wisconsin -- left for Oregon State
P.J. Fleck, Western Michigan -- left for Minnesota
Bryan Harsin, Arkansas State -- left for Boise State
Todd Monken, Southern Miss -- left for assistant job with Tampa Bay
Bobby Petrino, Western Kentucky -- left for Louisville
Matt Rhule, Temple -- left for Baylor
Willie Taggart, South Florida -- left for Oregon

Hanging in there
Steve Addazio, Boston College
Rod Carey, Northern Illinois
Dave Doeren, NC State
Skip Holtz, Louisiana Tech
Kliff Kingsbury, Texas Tech
Gus Malzahn, Auburn
Mark Stoops, Kentucky
Matt Wells, Utah State

Fired
Bret Bielema, Arkansas -- fired in 2017
Ron Caragher, San Jose State -- fired in 2016
Sonny Dykes, California -- fired in 2016
Darrell Hazell, Purdue -- fired in 2016
Paul Haynes, Kent State -- fired in 2017
Mark Helfrich, Oregon -- fired in 2016
Butch Jones, Tennessee -- fired in 2017
Sean Kugler, UTEP -- fired in 2017
Mike MacIntyre, Colorado -- fired in 2018
Trent Miles, Georgia State -- fired in 2016
Brian Polian, Nevada -- fired in 2016
Scott Shafer, Syracuse -- fired in 2015
Tommy Tuberville, Cincinnati -- resigned/fired in 2016
Ron Turner, FIU -- fired in 2016

I don't know what conclusions you want to draw. I look at Addazio's continued employment as affirmation that BC is a good job, where you can win, and the fans and administration have patience.

  1. Your last paragraph is nonsensical. Wr are out of patience and BC is a place where losing has become the norm.
    Of course atl won't reply.

  2. Ohio State has the 2nd best offense in the country. They have the 75th best defense. Yet Schiano gets constant praise from the media. With all the talent at OSU he has done a poor job. He had a 50% winning record at Rutgers and failed in the NFL. Compare him to Brown at Michigan who has managed the best D in the land in three of the last four years. Three New Englanders are some of the best coaches in America. Browm, Kelly at ND and Kelley at UCLA. BROWN should replace Daz who is a copy of the mediocre Schiano. 2.Is Brian Kelly at ND a good coach? He averages ten wins a year. TOB averaged ten a year plus beat ND six straight times. He won eight straight bowl games. Those are historic records. Only USC and Mich.ST. matched his record vs. ND. So criticism of TOB is completely baseless unless one is a pettifogger.

  3. The ND offensive coordinator is legit. Could scoop him a year before the rush. Everyone will be clamoring for him next season especially after they beat Clemson and give Alabama a game.

  4. Cannot wait until Saturday. Dazzler is going to lose his mind on the sidelines when Syracuse gets all the calls. It will get him fired. . . If we lose and the bowl. If he keeps his cool he won't get canned either way.

  5. Only teams beating Clemson are Bama or itself.

  6. Bama vs Clemson. It's ordained.

  7. Not by Father Kelly.

  8. BC should go after the Army coach.

  9. Is a place where mediocrity has become the norm a good job as ATL describes it? Also, exactly what does he mean by BC is a place where you can win?

Yes, you can win here, but it doesn't mean that you do. Addazio is one game over 500 overall, 11 games under in conference and 1-3 in bowl games. Can he win? sure, but he actually only wins half the time.

I think the fact that Addazio is still there means it might be a "good" job for some coaches because the bar has been set so low. But those aren't the kind of coaches we should want. We don't want another Addazio. We don't want somebody that thinks 7-6 is good enough.

ATL seems to think that is ok and equates to this being a good job.

  10. Tony, Toni Tone. Checking in with more bullshit questions.

  11. Actually, knucK, old Toni is right on.

  12. Too many question marks from Tony, Toni, Tone.

There is still a game left against Syracuse and a chance to get the 8 wins. The Syracuse backup I saw earlier in the season was very good. If we win it will be a legit win and a very good season. If we lose the season is an abject failure. I said before the FSU game that the way Dazzler coaches, aggressively or not, will indicate whether or not he understands the importance of the game. He coached like a bitch and he knows it. This is it for him at BC. Win Saturday or start up the hotseat for termination. Will be interesting to see how he handles it. He totally fucked up last week. Maybe he had too many "crappy" sandwiches after the loss to Clemson.

  14. And Knuck just nailed it. What's next, Knuck and Mod becoming drinking buddies? Comrade Joey becoming a Trump loving conservative? I love harmony.

  15. Trent Miles at Georgia State was a friend of Jags who was his offensive coordinator and did a decent job. Since then< Jags and his five kids have been wandering through the wilderness. Last year, he was the offensive line coach at Notre Dame HS in Chattanooga. This year, not so sure. At least give him credit for being a very good father.

  16. ND quarterback is better than Tua . . . and the weirdo from Clemson. May not be better than them in the NFL but he is better than them right now. Kelly is a better game coach than Dabo too. Neutral field game vs Clemson ND will open a 3 point underdog but it will edge to 1 if not less. Book will win it for Clemson. They haven't really played anyone good this season, Texas AM? Wouldn't even be surprised if they lose to SC or PITT. PITT Oline is very good, like BC used to be, and isn't taking any shit from Clemson. Narduzzi is a nutcase too.

  17. Book will win it for ND.

  19. Knucklehead, I’m in complete agreement.

    Let’s crush it?

    Go Eagles!!! 🦅

  20. Mod34b, you’re right, it’s pathetic that mediocrity is accepted here.

    But we’re gonna crush it!!!!

    Go Eagles!!!! 🦅

  21. JBQ, Jags was a letdown, but at least he’s a good father!

    Jags is NOT crushing it.

    Go Eagles!!!! 🦅

  22. Georgia Eagle, I wish you were right, but I don't see Addazio getting fired this year.

    Either way, you're crushing it!!!!

  23. Seven win Steve has reached his potential at BC as we have seen this year with a terrible league and he is stuck at 7 wins. Time for a change

However if you look at this list Daz was one of best hires. Rhule, Harsin, Stoops, Malzahn and maybe Carey & Fleck (thou he is gonna get fired at Minnesota) are better hires but that’s it. Bates didn’t do horrible if those are the other coaches that were hired.

As I have said many times, Daz did what he was hired to do, for program back on track with BC kids and built a solid foundation, I don’t think that can be debated regardless of how much you dislike him. However if he couldn’t win 9 this year with this team in this league he can’t do it.

  31. BTW, if anyone is interested in seeing where BC football once was and could be again with the right coach, read this celebrating the 25th anniversary of "The Kick":

    https://www.boston25news.com/sports/in-their-own-words-an-all-time-eagle-upset-of-notre-dame/9284499

While we were not in the ACC at the time and the college football landscape is now unquestionably different (the SEC did not rule then like it does now), the rankings we had and the stature of opponents we played was incredible. For those of you who were not around then, that was not a roster of 4 and 5 star recruits. The lacked the size, talent and athleticism of the bigger opponents. The roster TC inherited from Bicknell was a mess. The recruiting challenges were no different. But what they had was a smart, disciplined, prepared leader that could both inspire his team to achieve and consistently come up with a winning game plan that played to their strengths and the opponents' weakness.

It can definitely happen at BC once again once we get the right coach. And it will be beautiful.

  32. Ned—TOB did not average 10 wins a season. Far from it. He did not win the Big East either. All this love for Notre Dame is pretty ridiculous. They’ve had a fairly easy schedule (none of their big time opponents really panned out besides Michigan). I think they get killed in the playoff semis. Also watch out for USC. They’re awful but Helton needs to save his job.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks BCE93 It was the best and this is the best from that best

"STEPHEN BOYD - It wasn’t about Notre Dame. It wasn’t about beating the #1 team in the country. It was about a bunch of 19, 20, 21 year-olds who had been through so much together and the lesson was, “You work hard and you never stop and you never give up and you’re gonna win. You’re gonna have success.” And that’s what it was. It was just a celebration of everything that Coughlin had instilled in us. It was a great way to end one of the best college football games this country has ever seen. Definitely the best football game I ever played in."

It can be that way again and will.

Happy Thanksgiving to all( and I do mean ALL)

  34. BC Eagle 93 is TOTALLY CORRECT 1983-2007 25 glorious years of BC football and basketball.
Tom Coughlin , Tom O'Brian , Jeff Jags. BB Jim O'Brien , Al Skinner and women's bb
    the great Cathy Inglese.
Then came two ignoramus ADs FLOPO and BATES HORROS and Father Leahy who immediately
CANCELLED what was called Midnight Madness to open bb season. Not representative of an academic institution.
Leaving a BC football game I saw Fr Monan greeting the fans as they left the parking
garage while Fr Leahy was hustling out of the area.
WE CAN DO IT AGAIN !!! Peter Carmichael for HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
JARED DUDLEY , DANYA ABRAMS and co. for BB.
