The Texas A&M issue was not BC's fault

Long story short, but I've worked in the airline space and in the charter airline space. There is a bit to unpack in BC-Texas A&M's cancellation, but this is not about BC screwing up or having an inferior charter partner.

1. BC's charter company is the same one as Texas A&M's and handles the vast majority of the ACC, SEC and Big Ten. People love to complain about BC's decisions and accuse BC of going cheap, but we are using the premier company for college sports. It is the company every major basketball program uses. This could have happened to Duke, Louisville, Kentucky, etc.

2. All Travel Managers (charter brokers) use sub contractors. The charter business is all about subcontracting. Once again, all college basketball teams deal with this. The company whose plane had the mechanical issue (Elite) is a reliable and big company. The second sub contractor used and mentioned in the BC announcement (Via) is not as big but still a good operator. If their pilot didn't want to fly in the weather or was worried about the necessary refuel in the bad weather across the country, then you don't fly.

3. Texas A&M was inflexible on the reschedule. Think of how often this is done (we did it with Wake Forest football this year). We've done it outside the conference too. A&M would not play the game later on Saturday nor any time on Sunday or even Monday.

This is unfortunate since I we could have used a win. My guess is with the finger pointing, this future series won't happen.

  1. Anyone see the Army coach interviewed at halftime today? A real man. Opposite of Fat Man and the puss, aka the Daz and Khead.

  2. Why so inflexible?
    Something is fishy

  3. A&M offered to move the game back two hours to 7:00. BC wanted to play at 9:00. A&M's arena is unavailable on Sunday, and Monday is the beginning of Final Exam week. I don't blame A&M for not wanting to play the game at 9:00 the last Saturday of the semester. How many students do you think would blow off the last weekend of partying to attend the game? A&M offered a compromise, and it wasn't enough to appease BC. They made a decision that further pushing the time back is not feasible from a business perspective. It may not be BC's fault, but it certainly isn't A&M's fault. They are not responsible for BC's travel issues.

    1. The arena is available Sunday. This is on A&M.

    2. Initial report was otherwise. Regardless, why is it on A&M to rearrange their logistical setup during the heart of exam schedule to appease a team that had internal issues? They offered a compromise, and BC declined.

    3. Gerry. 100% agree. These SEC student athletes need Saturday night to spend at the library. They couldn’t possibly be expected to put aside their studies to play a basketball game. Most of these players will be going pro in something other than basketball and they must be prepared.

    4. Thinking more about the 10,000 students that might have wanted to go, but has an exam tomorrow?? Economics 101. BC fucked up on travel..not the host team's issue

  10. I appreciate that BC seemingly did what is best for the safety of our students. It's just a stupid game. Screw A&M.

  17. Great effort against a strong Minnesota team. Should be able to compete strongly for
    place 5-7 in ACC.
As a blogger pointed out Coach Mac needs to have her ladies emulate Larry Bird
with hundreds of foul shots in practice.
When you need to foul don't foul an 88 % shooter repeatedly.

    GO BC

  18. The mechanical/logistics issue was a 3-4 hour delay. The game was still 24+ hours away. So that wasn't the primary issue. The weather was not an issue. The airport in College Station was operating with flights going in and out all day and night. The weather was never severe. It was a steady rain. There was not a safety issue. Winds were 15-20 mph. The game could have easily been played at the original 5:00 or the offered delay at 7:00.

Yes, the BC pre-game routine with shoot-around the night before would have been affected, but things like that happen frequently and the traveling team sucks it up and plays the game as scheduled. The only time a game should be cancelled or postponed is if the team physically can't get to the arena. That was certainly not the case here. Hard to pin that on Texas A&M.

  22. At the end of the day - no matter the "ground truth" - this doesn't sound good for BC. It's not like there were weather delays and cancelled flights around the country, or even regionally. BC cites a doppler weather map in the landing area. Huh? 1-when taken, that weather was 4+ hrs away from BC's flight getting there. 2-planes fly in, or above weather - particularly rain - all the time.
Finally, A&M did a much better job controlling the narrative w news/sports media, as they got aggressively out in front with their message or spin.
    Embarrassing black eye for BC.

  26. It's really hard for anyone to argue the cancellation is all BC's fault when Texas A&M declined several options to play the game.

  34. Anyone check out the profile on our new AD in the alumni mag? Really sickening. Quotes like “the crowd just wanted to reach out to touch his shoulder and thank him” made me want to gag.
Since Khead never went to college, never mind BC, someone send him a copy so he can stay in the loop. Although I’m not sure he is literate based on his posts.

Mod, You haven't ever made a sports related point. Hating Daddy, everyone in a management position in the Boston College athletic department doesn't count. That is merely one of your life issues being expressed under the guise of sports.

You don't know anything about sports and you contribute nothing.

How is the fucking joke "biz" going?

  42. From our resident Redneck:

"Cute. Now Joey, shall we discuss sports or politics today? Anything but this incessant chatter about a botched flight to the great state of Texas."

And then this: "Jarmond sounds like the second coming of Obama the Messiah."

Racist?? If not, then at least stupid and totally uncalled for. Typical of GE. The response will contain some variation of slurs including "Comrade", "socialist" "lefty".

No rational explanation of the post to even mention the former president. Like our dear leader, he doesn't ever have to make sense. Blind ignorance never apologizes because he thinks he can do no wrong. Like his posts on twitter today that they wall has been mostly built and that the military will finish it. Lies upon lies.
