Army hires Foster away from BC Baseball

BC Baseball looked hapless as recently as two years ago. The turnaround began last year. In part due to improved and maturing talent, but also due to pitching coach Jim Foster. That success gained notice as Army hired Foster to be their next head coach.

If you listened to the player interviews during BC's run, they gave a lot of credit to Foster. He called very solid games and provided great scouting reports on the other team's hitters. Beyond the NCAA tourney success, Foster also served as a trusted adviser to Gambino. When he joined the staff, Foster brought much needed experience as a head coach from his days at URI. Hopefully Gambino appreciated what Foster brought to the team and finds another great assistant who can handle the pitching staff as well as fill in for some of Gambino's short comings.

Best of luck to Foster at West Point. Coaching and winning there is always a challenge. If he struggles, I would love to see him return to BC as an assistant. If he wins big, maybe he'll be the head man here one day.

LSD must be making a comeback.

This is a big loss for the program. By far BC baseball's prior ACC woes were principally with their pitching. They were usually a respectable hitting team - but the pitching was way below ACC levels. Foster did a great job this year. Gambino needs to really focus on finding a replacement. Its almost as important as Gambino's job.

There is something really wrong. Either BC figures it out or they leave the ACC.

@JBQ - I'll bite. What do we need to figure out or else leave the ACC?

@SaturdaysOnShea: Brown left for Michigan and now Foster leaves for Army. There are others. They can't keep good coaches primarily for money. They then turn around and pay Addazio 2.6 mill for a total of 8 years. Chet Gladchuk had a feel for running an athletic program. It is obvious that Bates does not. I was on campus in March of 2015. I visited the athletic office after a written invitation from Brad Bates. My impression was that he "delegates" responsibility and is rarely there.

@JBQ - There's nothing wrong. Brown may have left for money, but I'm sure that the allure of coaching for a national championship at one of the most storied programs in college football had something to do with it as well.

As for Foster, an assistant coach left to become a head coach, it happens all the time. Is there something wrong at Ohio St.? DC Chris Ash left to be the HC at Rutgers. Or Oregon? OC Scott Frost left to be the HC at UCF. Or Alabama? Kirby Smart left this year to become the HC at Georgia, and Jim McElwain left a few years ago to become the HC at Colorado State. Is it a problem for the program that they have to replace a successful assistant coach? Absolutely. But Foster's leaving is not evidence of an endemic problem at BC.

@Boston: You are probably right. However, recent release of tax records for 2014 at Notre Dame through SI leave a lot of confusion for economic decisions made at BC. Brian Kelly had a base salary of 900K with a bonus for targets of 500K. Compare this to the 2.6 mill paid Addazio for 5 years and then with a 3 year extension. The amount of payment is exorbitant and the extension is nonsense. I know that Andre Williams had a great year and made Addazio look good. However, there were records extent to show what happened at Temple during the three years that Addazio was there. Actually, he used the players recruited by Spaz. His recruiting efforts have been very bad. The change in offense has opened up good recruiting. You make him produce before you afford an 8 year contract. The "cream on the cake" was the 150K "loan" afforded to the Dazzler. I am very surprised noting that the chair of the board of trustees is John Fisk who leads a construction company (Suffolk) which is ranked in the top 200 businesses in the whole country.

@JBQ - Just an aside, I don't think it's fair to compare Addazio's salary with Kelly's salary. As a private institution, ND doesn't have to reveal anything about Kelly's compensation. So while the $1 million or so reported base seems low, he could be making a great deal more in bonuses and undisclosed compensation. He could get a cut of all ND merchandise sales for all we know, or have a secondary "do-nothing" job that adds to his compensation. A better comparison for Addazio might be Larry Fedora of UNC who had the Tar Heels ranked #15 with an 11-3 record in 2015. He only makes $1.9 million. NCCA Coaches Salaries
