Gene D. pleaded with fans to get to their seats on time in the Globe and the Herald. The extra half-hour of tailgating should help, but I think there is more to the issue than that. Like campuses around the country BC games are big social events. But there is a weird combo that comes into play at the Heights. First the shortened tailgating hours make fans feel they need to milk every second of pregame partying. Then there is the “too cool to care” attitude that many BC students have (and that ambivalence carries beyond graduation “we stink. I am just here to see friends”). They all go to the game, but they want to hang out and act indifferent (as college kids in the Northeast are want to do regarding sports). Then you mix in a team and coach that don’t inspire a frenzied, blood-thirsty, “send in the lions” environment. Add on TOB always defers and you’ve got a fan base that will trickle in. No pleading from Gene is going to change it. The party is too important and that culture is not going to change until the fans feel like they will miss something by not being there at kickoff. There are only a few thousand diehards. The rest of the crowd has and will have the “win or lose, we still booze” attitude.
Ball State gave us all we could handle last season. Now let’s hope they can suit up 11 players by October 1.
