Aponavicius takes over kicking duties; Ohliger digs hole

Walk-on Steve Aponavicius will kick for BC Thursday night against Virginia Tech. It appears Billy Flutie was considered but the team wanted to preserve his redshirt (more on that in a minute).

The most comical aspect of the whole affair is how Ryan Ohliger handled the situation. Considering how low profile BC is, TOB, Gene, et al. run a pretty tight ship with their media relations. They clearly like to project certain things and control what is written and said. So what does our headcase kicker do after getting in an off-campus fight? He gives an unapproved interview with the Herald explaining his side of the story. He doesn’t come off all that savy (or tough). “Blah blah while I was being held down, they attacked…blah blah they know me, I don’t know them…” Ohliger didn’t need a sports psychologist for this one. He needed a muzzle.

Now to Flutie. I hope he was beaten out for the job. It is a big mistake to preserve his redshirt if he is our best kicker. The ACC is very winnable this year. Saving his redshirt for a rainy day is short sighted. TOB admitted he didn’t think the ACC was winnable when he started Porter over Ryan against UNC last year. It was a glimpse into his thought process: “big picture is more important than one moment here or there.” That type of thinking will keep you employed but never win a championship. Sometimes you have to roll the dice. If you asked Billy Flutie if he would rather be the kicker on the ACC Champion or be the starter in the 2011 San Fran Bowl, what choice do you think he’d make?

Good luck to Aponavicius. Hopefully this has a happy ending.

Hopefully Flutie is not the best option and we are playing the best player available. I agree if Five years is so important, they could redshirt him next year.

Couldn't agree more re: Ohliger's interview.

The kid clearly has some issues, and that was a very dumb move. I would say his talking to the press made his "indefinite" suspension quite a bit longer.
