Wow. I almost ALMOST left the sports bar in disgust to walk home. When I turned to leave, someone finally convinced me to stay for 1 more beer. Oh what a sweet, sweet beer it was. I don't remember drinking it, I don't remember seeing it. It's probably overturned somewhere under the pool table. I saw nothing else, except Heisman playing for two drives. This, fellas, is BC!!!

No matter what happens from here on till the end of the season...

Damn that was a helluva game.

I'm sure like the rest of you, I reverted back into how I was in the TOB era. Sign off on the game and look to next week.

Instead...well, Dougie had "The Pass" & "Miracle in Miami"

Matty Ice..."The Comeback"..."Miracle in Blacksburg"

Bill, YOU FORGOT TO PUT ON THE WHALE PANTS UNTIL 2:11 LEFT IN THE 4TH DIDN'T YOU???!!! Haha.

Did anyone else notice that in the wrap up show, they had a logo saying the FSU game was going to be on ESPN2 next week? Probably would be the 7p game I would think. Hope so - it makes a trip to Boston possible.

Rafael, true story...after VT's pooch punt I took off the pants and put on my Ryan for Heisman t-shirt. Now I am going to have to watch the rest of the season in boxers and the Ryan t. That'll be a little drafty at Clemson.

unbelievable.. speechless.

please correct me if i'm wrong (and if the decision has already been made by the WWL), but looking at the schedules for nov. 3, there seems to be a very good chance that college gameday will be coming to the heights for FSU

so i just got back from pat o'brien's, a BC bar here in NYC.

just like all of you, the fans were beyond restless watching the va-tech defense dominate. it was the most frustrating thing on earth to watch matty struggle for 55 minutes the way he did. but you know what? that win was truly miraculous... perhaps not at the flutie hail mary level, but miraculous, nonetheless. several times in the 4th quarter, i was ready to toss my warm beer and just head home. but i'll forever be greatful that i stuck around to watch the drama unfold. we definitely were not supposed to win that game. but i tell you what - something special is going on with this team. i hope that this ride never ends... it's confirmed in my head that we're for real.

once the final whistle blew and the win was official, all the BC fans were hugging each other out of pure joy and relief... tears of joy were definitely in many fans' eyes. it was surreal to enjoy a win like this (we've been dissapointed by TOB too many times).

for the record, it was also awesome how the bar owners immediately blasted "shippin' up to boston" and "sweet caroline" when BC won. my only jeers were how by the 4th quarter, there was only 1 TV left showing the BC game.... everything else changed to the Red Sox.

don't sleep on this team! WE ARE BC!

Since I stepped foot on campus in 2001, this is the type of game that BC has consistently lost. The team tonight showed tremendous heart and pulled out a close game that is the mark of every championship team. The defense played great, and the confidence that Jags and Matty Ice exude seems to rub off on the rest of the team. Hopefully the team can keep it up in the next few weeks.

We are BC!

Eagles8, GameDay will never, ever come to BC again. Granted Fowler fawned over the, in his words "stately academic buildings" (he used that term in two columns that week) but due to BC/Newton's tailgating rules, there is no way in hell they ever come to the Heights again. There were less than 300 people behind the set. These guys are used to 2000+ behind the set.

eagle1331 said...

firstly, i disagree that there were less than 300 behind the set. I camped out that night to be in the front row and it was one of the greatest experiences of my college career. There were many, many more than 3300 there and if you were actually there you would have known that. Secondly, tonight in the mods was the BEST night of my BC career. It was insane. From the middle of the mods to vanderslice to walsh stretched a crowd of BC students chanting everything under the sun. Best aspect - the BCPD were there and didn't break it up. BC fans showed class tonight and that they deserved respect... bring on the next game...

Goberry said...

Eagle1331 was there, I only watched it on TV, so admittedly, touche. Perhaps next time they don't choose the Dustbowl and more people are near the set (as seen on TV).

BCDisco said...

Who was the a--hole in the booth who yelled "oh no!" as the ball left Ryan's hand on its way to Callendar's? Was it James?

Goberry said...

Yup, it was James. The same guy who hasn't yet put BC in his top ten (how he has an AP vote, I'll never know!)

This game ranks right up there with Pats/Broncos in 2003 (the intentional safety game) and the 2004 Wake/BC Ryan comeback as the best homer football games I've ever witnessed. Oh my. I was in the canting position for the last minute and half.

I do take umbrage to the posts elsewhere that I've already seen that claim "Win or not, I'm still not impressed with BC." People blamed the BCS in 03. They're blaming the rankings now. The BCS has to keep doing what it's doing. Majority opinion is so rarely justified when you get to thinking that the majority of lightly skilled tradesmen who are so vocal about college football think scoring points and/or SEC = deserves national championship.

Those posters can go eat used Charmin.

If you told me that 2 years on from joining the ACC, we'd be 8-0, ranked in the top 5, leading the ACC Atlantic over FSU, Clemson, & MD, have an exciting coaching staff, and be preverbiably giving the finger to wags & pundits everywhere?

I'd have put the white coat on you and thrown you in the padded cell myself.

Next Tuesday I'm flying Manila-Nagoya-Detroit-NYC and I promise you I'm gonna wear my BC Hat and try to get those comments out of people like Jags wanted last December.

BC Football, where the fun begins at the 57 minute, 49 second mark, but began nonetheless.

GO EAGLES!!!!!

I ask this question with no intention of diminishing any of Ryan's or BC's accomplishments last night and I ask coming from a Va Tech point of view: Why on earth did Va Tech go away from the blitz and play a zone/prevent defense the last two drives? The blitz gave Ryan fits all game but Va Tech rush only 3 or 4 on the final 2 drives. What in the world were they thinking?

ORDEagle said...

I think they were sucking wind at the end as well. They really couldn't chase down Ryan like they were earlier. But remember, they were sacking us or hitting ryan earlier with just a three man rush and eight in the zone. He had no where to throw. This time, because they couldn't catch him, guys were able to run around until they got free.

ClassO10 said...

Pretty sure James said oh my goodness. Just my opinion.

flutie22phelan20 said...

James definitely did say "Oh my goodness." And that's when we knew that somebody was open in the corner!

If BC can win over the uber-skeptic Fowler and James, which they did, then they certainly won over a few other voters. Aside from one drive--when BC inexplicably rushed 3 guys on 5 straight 3rd and longs--the game was horribly ugly on both sides, as much a function of the weather as anything. BC got a few breaks...evening out the questionable calls...and, wow, that'll be a great memory.

-Ryan12Callendar32.

Darius said...

22/20--you nailed it. No one's mentioned it until you just now, probably because a lot of folks insisted it was "oh no!," but the instant we heard "oh my goodness" everyone here's first thought had to be "someone's open off screen." Sure enough...

Craig James got slammed a lot for his dismissal of BC leading up to this game, and got slammed even harder during this game, but his criticism was fair for 56 minutes--we weren't getting it done. Outplayed and outcoached (though only barely--I agree the officiating sucked and was slanted).

But to James' credit, he made up for it with props at the end. Hey, we're Christians we have nothing against converts, right? I just wish he'd taken the final step and said, "Forget #2. BC has just pulled off a bigger win than anything OSU has done all year. The Eagles are my #1 team."

Three things to take away from this game: 1) The defense played out of this world. They were on the field nearly the entire game and they stopped drive after drive after drive. Even Va Tech's touchdown was a stop in my opinion. They kept Matt Ryan and the offense in this game. 2) Never, ever give up on the Eagles. I gave up on them when Ryan threw the pick with 6 minutes to go. Shame on me. I'm old enough to remember Miami in '84 and South Bend in '93 so I should have had faith. I guess the TOB era caused me to give up hope. 3) This, in my opinion is a better comeback than the aforementioned games. Both Flutie and Foley only needed one score. Matt Ryan, who I have been critical of for not closing out the big games, needed 2 scores, one a 90 yard drive! What he did last night was remarkable. He willed the Eagles to victory.

BC fans, please get out to Alumni next week to prop up the Eagles. They have to be physically and emotionally exhausted and they are vulnerable to a letdown. BC nation needs to help pick them up against FSU. Thank goodness for the 2 extra days of rest.

My favorite calls of the final drive:

1) When Matty throws a strike to BRob (Fowler): "Delivered...rrrrrobinson!"

2) As Matty releases The Pass (James): "Oh my goodness! Oh my!"

3) Before the touchdown throw (Blackledge): "Ten to twelve yards is what you're looking for right now if you're Matt Ryan." Hilarious. Maybe you should have been looking for a touchdown, Mr. Blackledge.

4) My favorite (Fowler): "And Lane Stadium goes silent." Beautiful, silent, noiseless music to my ears.

The things that stood out to be about the last drive: Matty was game enough to avoid the rush and keep the play alive, the O-Line--especially--Gos never gave up on their blocks while Matty scrambled, and Matty completed five passes to five different receivers (Purvis, Rrrrrrobinson, Gunnell, Challenger, and Callender).

Cannot wait for next weekend. WE ARE BC!

Good game- BC pussy schedule is pitiful. We need a playoff so bad.

Eagle in Brighton said...

Let the SEC bitch all they want...their top dog LSU barely escaped last week as well.

Sean said...

listen up norcal, aim your vacant stare and shaggy blonde hair elsewhere. theres no room for your sunny disposition here in this sullen, downtrodden bastion of new englandness. and dont get me wrong - i think bc is far and away the best team in the acc. even if vatech managed to stick with them for 4 quarters i would say thats more of a function of home field advantage and bein under the lights on a thursday rather than an actual measure of the team. but bc as national title contenders? id rather watch that other matt.........grothe, son.

eagleinexile said...

Losing to unranked Rutgers and losing to the #8 team the country are not quite the same thing, CC. Why is it, that only BC can win at Lane Stadium on Thursday night?nay, only BC can beat VTech on Thursday night. If going 8-0 is so easy, then why isn't everyone doing it? Your golden boy, Grothe, was sacked 7 times by not the greatest defense, and he looked completely unglued the entire second half. BTW, wasn't Grothe supposed to be a dual threat QB? What's the dual threat, not being able to throw and being able to take sacks? No thanks, I'll take two TD's in 2 minutes and being undefeated as opposed to being a Tampa hooligan with a mohawk and very little natural ability.

Eagle in Brighton said...

@eagleinexile +1

Though LSU would be an extremely difficult game, BC would crush UCF (if that's what the debate is). BC's D would smother Florida's directional school of choice, and after last night, the our offense could only play better. BC would take that hypothetical matchup in a rout.

Sean said...

whoa whoa whoa, you settle yourself down here eagleinexile (who i think is secretly norcal incognito) i never said that 8-0 is easy or that usf is a better team than BC. allow me to shed some light on my comments for those of you who, used to discourse usually based around the qualities of natty vs. keystone (brainbender!), are unable to do anything but draw far reaching and specific conclusions from vaguery and personal opinion. i liked watching usf play, the rutgers game was turned on a very controversial call that could have easily pushed it the other way. grothe played like ass, im not an apologist for him but you have to admit he has made some pretty athletic plays (if you knew of his existence before they beat WVU) and is enjoyable to watch. remember though, your golden (shower) boy matt ryan had a pretty pedestrian game up until 2:00 on the clock. good for him for pulling it out of his ass but whoever was sending the three man rush is a moron - even on 3rd and 20. but yeah fuck tampa, ill pile on there.

Sean said...

yeah eagleinbrighton, bc would crush ucf. thats some quality analysis right there. am i surprised? of course not. hey do all you guys buy your commenter names at the same store?

Eagle in Brighton said...

UCF, USF, FUS- they all sound like community colleges to me.

Who gives a crap about Florida? All that matters right now is those 4 games left on the sched.

Btw, its looking like FSU next Sat. is a night start (rather than 3:30) to accomodate national coverage.

Sean said...

i dont know eagleinbrighton, fus has looked tough this year. are you really merril hoge? theres not one good team for bc left on the schedule. they should run the table and play for the crystal thingy. hopefully unmasked by a one loss lsu after ohio state seppukus themselves at the big house.

Willis said...

eagle in brighton, are you Don Jeans?

Sean said...

i bet you do know what a community college name sounds like eagle in brighton. by which i mean i bet you know because im guessing you went to community college. not that theres anything wrong with that.

+2 Conformists Choice for dumbing down content for audience and sending the "right" message by not panning community college out of hand, even if its a joke.

the reigning champion is exiting the building to go get fucked up cuz its friday! the bcs computers watch you while you sleep.

Stay classy CC. Good night trolling.

BCNorCal07 said...

This message is for all of us not named Conformist's Choice. It seems that Mr. CC has some issues to work out this evening, but needed to get his sadomasochistic edge in, as well. Fair enough. I think it is in everyone's best interest from on if we just ignore Mr. CC. Why? There's no use getting angry at this point. We had a great win last night. No, it wasn't pretty, but a win is always ALWAYS prettier than a loss. We're still undefeated (how many schools can say that) and completely in control of our destiny for the rest of the year, which won't be a cake-walk. So please, no more personal attacks (though mud-slinging, that fine tradition fandom, is always acceptable). Let's just make sure we have our game-faces on for next week.

WE ARE BC!

eagleinexile said...

Norcal, Eagle in Brighton and all BC fans,

As far as CC is concerned, you know what they say about arguing on the internet.... My attack was on Grothe, who, despite some very good play, is overrated. He is a college QB, plain and simple, and will not play on Sunday. Ryan on the other hand is NFL all the way. That throw (to win the game) last night was an impossible throw. Coaches tell their defenders that when a QB rolls one way, do not worry about the backside coverage because NOBODY can make that throw. There's only a few guys in College or the NFL who could make that throw and one of them was in Blacksburg last night. Well, his name ain't NOBODY, it's Matt Ryan, and you'll be seeing him at the DAC in December.

WE ARE BC!

Sean said...

alright ive gotta be honest im somewhere between blasted and blacked out, but had to respond real quick.

eagleinexile: youre right, it was a great throw. is matt ryan one of the best if not the best qb in the ncaa right now? probably - i would put him right behind brohm but ahead of woodson and tebow. that doesnt matter though - only the w's do and hes collectin them better than anyone else right now. and its obvious grothe is a college qb only and THATS why i like watching him. you dont see those types of players at the next level.

bcnorcal: sorry, my first comment was just mean and vindictive - but miami at home to end the season? smacks of poetic retribution 20 some years in the making. im a umd alum and its becoming apparent to me that bowl eligibility isnt anywhere close to a sure thing (it should be for our team)and we routinely throw away games like the one bc stole last night. jealousy? of course! that being said im rooting for bc more than any other team in the acc. why do you think im reading the bc blog? also i dont have any issues with sadomasochism, i just like pullin some ponytails when im hittin it from the back.

eagle in brighton: thank you for not getting all emo like these other dudes (or girls who comment like dudes?)

finally ive got no problem with bc, im impressed with your young coach and how well hes doing, youve got a great qb who seems to be a consumnate team player and professional, and your defense, while not the most athletic, is always mean and definitely brings the wood. you dont have to tell me, i know im right. but seriously if i have to watch another boston area sports team reach the pinnacle of success in their respective sport im gonna shit my pants. it doesnt help that im watching the c's punish the defending eastern champion cavs. so there you go. if im the most hated commenter then FAAAAAAAAAANTASTIC. this is the first day ive ever commented here so it can only go up from here.

keep it greazy,
CC
