In-game comments post: Virginia Tech (ACC Championship)

I have been referring to the last few weeks as the unofficial ACC Tournament. Today is a bit more official. This is the big one. A win would help BC finally get to that "next level." Let's hope today is memorable for the right reasons.

I will not be online during the game (I didn't want to lug the laptop to Tampa). Leave your comments below.

Here's my question for BC Football historians. Is Dominique Davis the first Black starting quarterback BC has ever had? I only go back to the early 90s so I'm not sure if he is or not. If so, that's a fairly significant thing that the local media hasn't picked up on at all. Kudos to Jags and Logan for bringing in the best players for their system, period.

Go Eagles!

Story:

I just poured myself a glass of OJ and, when I was doing so, seriously considered using my roommate's ND glass (he went there for a year and then transferred). Then I realized, I want nothing positive to do with that place. That glass is only fit for relief of oneself. Phew, that was close.

GO EAGLES!

Not football related, but Cory Schneider picked up his first NHL win last night for the Canucks.

Hope everyone has a good day watching the game

Willie Hicks - before Glen Foley.

Unknown said...

Willie Hicks was also one of the last Eagles to come out of the City of Boston and the Boston Public Schools.

Unknown said...

It is killing me that I won't be able to watch this game (work conferences all day).

GOOO EAGLES!!! I promise I'll be there in person for the Orange Bowl. :)

Rob said...

Is there anyway to watch this online? I'm stuck studying for my exams in the library today :(

mmason said...

GO EAGLES!

eagleboston said...

Taylor is getting way too much time to throw the ball.

Kevin said...

Sell my tickets for the Orange Bowl now, too.

Start drinking the Margaritas!

Bravesbill said...

BC is getting beat on the line of scrimmage. Not looking good.

Ry said...

Not liking the run D so far

eagleboston said...

Let's don't panic yet. I think we have been down against Va Tech by two scores the last two regular season games. Of course, we don't want to get down too much as I don't think our offense can score much against this defense.

Kevin said...

I just felt some deja vu.

Last year's ACCCG is coming back.

No!

Rob said...

Breathe, Niems, breathe.

eagleboston said...

Eagle in Atlanta predicted 24-9 so it looks like we are going to shut them down the rest of the game and the offense will give up a safety.

eagleboston said...

I think the big adjustment the D needs to make is to put a spy on Taylor.

Bravesbill said...

Did BC seriously just punt from the 33? Are you kidding? That's something TOB would do.

tow2nd2none said...

That was 4 down territory, we shoulda ran on 3rd and 4

Ry said...

Davis is slow in making his reads

eagleboston said...

I disagree. The punt was absolutely the right call there. Why give them excellent field position when their first TD was scored on a drive that started in roughly the same area?

Boy, you just cannot false start deep in your own territory. That is a drive killer!

eagleboston said...

Here is a provocative question: If Davis cannot move this offense and we get behind by another score, do you insert Flutie? I highly doubt Jags would do this but it makes for an interesting debate.

tow2nd2none said...

Yeah gaining 13 yards of field position on a punt was definitely worth it

Rob said...

eagleboston, I would answer that the same way I answered it against Maryland, Davis is the guy.

Ry said...

VT's running game has not been as good as we are making it look right now

eagleboston said...

We have to hold them to a field goal here.

Bravesbill said...

They punted from the 33! That is hardly field position.

And it looks like its good night BC. BC came out flat on both defense and offense and boy does it show.

Thomas said...

I guess we should be used to not showing up in big games.

Kevin said...

Rob,
Can I panic now?

eagleboston said...

It's not over but this is a tremendous hole to dig out of. I just don't see Davis keeping up with Tech's scoring. It's too bad we could not play them with Crane as he was much improved from the first game.

Hopefully, they won't blow us out from a pride standpoint.

Thomas said...

Who is Chris Fox? And why is he returning kicks?

Rob said...

You may, Niems.

Rob said...

Tim Fox's kid, former Patriot.

Bravesbill said...

Your down by 14 on 3rd and long and you call a draw play? WTF? Another BC choke job in another huge game. BC just can't get over the hump.

eagleboston said...

It is easy to criticize Davis, but it is asking a lot for a freshman to beat this defense. Wake and Maryland just cannot compare to Tech. And, keep in mind, Ryan, perhaps BC's greatest qb ever, did not fare well his first year.

Bravesbill said...

Horrible contain defense. BC still has not learned to stay in their damned lanes.

eagleboston said...

The problem with our 300 pound tackles is that Taylor just blows by them.

Ry said...

appropriate that the audio quality on matt ryan's call in was as bad as it was.

matthew2 said...

CAN WE NOT GIVE UP ALREADY???!!!!!My GOD. Crane sucked until he got hurt, Davis sucked until he won 2 games, but now a couple bad drives and he sucks again. Flutie makes for an interesting debate??? Are you kidding me???

Wow, there's an INT. I guess it's not over after all. Let's all get back on the horse now.

Jesus people, are we really that bad and not confident as a fanbase?

eagleboston said...

Well, that turnover could turn things around for us. Great job Herzy!

Bravesbill said...

Surprise, another BC fumble. Do they not run ball carrying drills in practice? This is ridiculous.

Ry said...

i am encouraged by those last two throws from davis, the fumble notwithstanding...if we can get a stop i like our chances to score on our next possession

eagleboston said...

Well, that turnover was brutal but one thing we discovered is Davis seems to play better with the offense wide open. Of course, down 2 TD's you have to throw the ball.

matthew2 said...

looks like we have momentum, and have turned it around on both fronts. Scoring going into halftime would be huge, especially because we get the ball int he second half

Adidaspete said...

i want to vomit...

Deacon Drake said...

Run defense is a little weak... field position is finally changing though. That fumble was inexcusable... awful.

eagleboston said...

Here's another thing about being down two scores. The other team tends to relax and not play with as much intensity. We can catch them napping and cut the lead to 7. Then, we have a decent shot as our defense can create turnovers.

Still a lot of time left and with BC football, crazy things can happen.

Kevin said...

Alright, good job Dom and Montel. Finish out the drive now.

Deacon Drake said...

They did make a good point earlier that Davis uses poor mechanics on handoffs and doesn't fool anybody.

Rob said...

Hell yeah baby

eagleboston said...

Woo hoo! Davis just needed a little time to get warmed up. I also think we are seeing that he plays better wide open as opposed to conservatively.

That Herzy turnover was huge!

Bravesbill said...

How dumb is Ramella? Didn't that idiot have a personal foul last game too?

eagleboston said...

Ramella is a personal foul machine but that was really ticky tack. C'mon refs!

eagleboston said...

We get the ball first to open the second. I can feel the mo turning. Beamer is great at adjustments but so is Jags. It's gonna be another cardiac game.

Mmason, it's rally margarita time!

mmason said...

Redneck refs are dangerous people in games like this one...let's hope we don't give these zebras a chance to hand the ball to VT in the 2nd half.

Ry said...

it's incredible how different Jags is from TOB. Just look at that interview coming off the field. whether it works or not, good to see some charisma

Bravesbill said...

Ry--that is true, however TOB would also punt from the 33.

eagleboston said...

Bravesbill,

C'mon, you cannot compare Jag's conservatism to O'Brien's. Jags has pulled fake punts inside his own 40, called fake field goals and gone for it on 4th down on numerous times. He is way more aggressive in 2 seasons than O'Brien was in 10.

And why criticize O'Brien for his style? It's what works for him. He has turned around NC State even quicker than he turned around BC.

Bravesbill said...

Eagleboston--I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. However, BC came out of the gates ultra-conservative today, which is not its style anymore. Perhaps that is the reason why BC came out flat on both sides of the football. Once BC began to open it up a little, it began playing much, much better.

mmason said...

Are we getting ready to see our Eagle linemen on both sides of the ball begin to hurt this tired bunch 'o Hokies?--Watch the sack machine of Raji & Co. start to hurry and worry these guys. We'll get this done, Eagle Nation. I'm thinkin' big plays goin' our way on the ground and the air...and Beamer will do his trickeration thing, and Jags is clearly going to get nuts with inspiration at the halftime mtg.
It's all good--I'm runnin' down to get some limes...'cuz it's almost time! Worry not, Eagles!

Bravesbill said...

It seemed as if BC came into the game playing not to lose, instead of just playing.

Rob said...

Bravesbill, flip it around. Would you be just as pissed off if Logan came out with Davis throwing all over the field and he throws a pick 6? I can just see you getting upset with putting an inexperienced, freshman QB in that position. Davis obviously and not surprisingly came out nervous so I'm sure Logan was trying to account for that and settle him down.

Bravesbill said...

It took 4 possessions and a 14 point deficit for Logan to finally open up the offense. Compound that with the punt. How long does it take for Davis to catch his sea legs? Not 4 possessions. And once Logan did open up the offense, Davis has looked really sharp.

Rob said...

I feel a BC pick 6 coming in the next few drives. Time for the D to score its weekly TD.

matthew2 said...

bravesbill just likes to hear himself talk. don't engage him.

Bravesbill said...

Matthew--wah wah wah. Cry me a river. Isn't the whole point of a blog and commenting to have a debate?

Schruender said...

We had Matt Ryan on in the first half and Doug Flutie in the second half. I feel bad for Va Tech.

Can somebody get connected with the Virginia prison that Michael Vick is in?

Bravesbill said...

Huge 3rd down hold even if they converted the FG. It must be nice having a kicker that can make those kinds of kicks.

Groundhog said...

i didnt realize 50 yd field goals were allowed in college football. i guess ive been watching bc for too long.

Unknown said...

salt on the wound...50yd fg?! are you kidding me!

CT said...

Taylor can't throw the ball consistently well and yet he continues to beat us with his legs.

And we've stopped running the ball.

Still time, but the margin for error shrinks.

eagleboston said...

Well, what is our strategy here gang? We are down 10 and the offense is strugglng. It appears Taylor may be a little dinged so that will slow him down but Glennon is a better passer.

I think we need to go to the air. With limited time, we need to get as may possessions as possible and running the ball helps Tech hold onto a nice lead.

mmason said...

Are these ABC commentators making anyone else crazy other than me? It's like the Beamer fan club whenever the Hokies do anything remotely well. Notice Tyrod limping off the field 'cuz he got himself walloped...they'll need their kicker from here on out so we have to score us some TD's pronto.

eagleboston said...

2 out of 9 on 3rd downs. That is just not getting it done. Let's hope Davis has another miracle in him becasue at this point, we need a big break to win this.

Rob said...

Well played, Groundhog, that got a chuckle out of me.

05Eagle said...

Not sure the offense can string together two long drives. The defense has to step up like it has all season and make a big play in hokie territory and get the offense some field position.

CT said...

Paul MacGuire had a frontal lobotomy about 10 years ago and is the single worst 'analyst' on television.

PM: "Okay, watch this, boom, he hits the hole."

Thank you, Paul.

Moron.

Unless the defense scores or gets a TO deep in VT territory, this one ain't lookin' good. Their time-consuming drives are killing us.

Hey, Taylor runs again. Shocking.

eagleboston said...

Mmason,

Beamer has earned the props. The guy just flat out wins and out-coaches everyone.

Bravesbill said...

Another absolutely retarded penalty.

eagleboston said...

How is it that BC has the smartest players in college football but they make the most absolutley stupid penalties?

Oh well, how about a 94 yard drive?

McGuire, shut up!

mmason said...

Another really stupid penalty that VT has been pulling on every kick, but BC will not be allowed to touch anyone in the back on a kick return...

CT said...

Hey, when do the Nashville tickets go on sale?

Kevin said...

Well guys. It was a great season.

See you in Memphis

Bravesbill said...

Turn out the lights, the party's over.

Bravesbill said...

Are you guys sure BC will be picked by the Music City Bowl? I was thinking more like San Francisco.

Rob said...

Kill me now

eagleboston said...

That is a shame. The o-line was blocking so well.

I know you guys think I'm crazy, but why not give Flutie a shot? What have you got to lose? Let's see what he can do. I am not down on Davis. He has a bright future but it is just not his night.

mmason said...

I truly hate VT...we need an answer for these guys--and watching it on ABC makes it worse. It's a homegame for these ABC guys and VT is their alma mater.
Well, we'll need the comeback of the century...make that the last two centuries. And it all started with a stupid clipping call on the kick-off...

CT said...

By the way, looks like another stellar turnout for the mausoleum that is the ACCCG.

I can hear individual fans in the stands.

Too many injuries? Yes.

Out-coached and out performed in the most important game? Yes.

This is what happens when you graduate 90% of your football team.

05Eagle said...

Another big game, another huge let down. Absolutely brutal.

bobble said...

how about something other than a pass on first down

mmason said...

There's lots of time left, and we justy have to play tough and keep cool. The Kid is truly being tested now--we're three scores down, but worms turn.

Groundhog said...

i would love to blame the heather dinich kiss-of-death, but i guess at the end of the day you have to play every game. VT's offense, defense, and special teams are firing on all cylinders. BC is not performing at all.

eagleboston said...

I am not as deflated as I was last year. First, never in a million years did I expect us to win the Atlantic. Second, when Crane went down, I did not even think we would win 2 games. And, finally, after 25 years of watching BC football, I've just come to expect them to lose the BCS chances.

BC will be back. They may never get to the BCS level, but they will always be competitive in the ACC under Jags. He did a phenomenal coaching job this year and he has a great nucleus coming back for next year. It was such a fun season I just wish wecould have won one more.

Rob said...

Game isn't over yet. We need Herzlich to pull one out of the air again.

eagleboston said...

Rob, did you type that after Herzy forced he fumble?

If not, which horse is going to win in the 8th?

Rob said...

Haha no I did it before, just going with past performance may equate to future results.

Rob said...

Touchdown here please

CT said...

No matter what happens, I still love Jags.

We're moving in the right direction.

We've got better looking cheerleaders than we had when I was there.

That's important for morale.

Davis' throws are bad for morale.

Ry said...

where did davis' accuracy go?

Ry said...

we are not going to get a better chance than the one we just cashed in....for a FG

05Eagle said...

Being competitive in the ACC includes getting back to the ACC championship and as a result, being at the BCS level. They won't be at the top of the conference every year, but I think they can occassionally compete for the crown, and who knows, maybe one time we'll get over the hump.

Rob said...

We need 3 no matter what but agreed, Ry

mmason said...

Ye of little faith...believe. (C'mon, it's all about time.)We've got to get an FG and 2 TD's, so let's be cool and put it to these guys. Don't we always do it the hard way? It's time for an onside kick, no? Or do we nail 'em deep and take it away from VT on our end? Who wants this the most right now?

eagleboston said...

I firmly believe Jags is building this program to year 4 when his first class will be juniors and seniors. He is bringing in more speed, lighter, quicker O-linemen and aggressive defenders. This year was a bonus and next year will be a challenge, but look out in 2 years.

Rob said...

There's no reason we can't be an elite team in the ACC. I'm not going to fall into the trap of accepting mediocrity. I'm not devastated with a loss here given the circumstances. I think this program is on the way up and these last two ACCCG appearances are not a fluke.

eagleboston said...

05Eagle,

I define the BCS level as winning the 'ship, not just going to the 'ship. Georgia Tech and Va Tech are going to be formidable opponents on the coastal side so it may be difficult to win out but I believe we will have a good shot to win the Atlantic each year.

Bravesbill said...

CT--the cheerleaders might be better looking but those uniforms are heinous. Why did BC replace perfectly good uniforms with ones that are urine colored? Those uniforms could make any attractive girl ugly.

Rob said...

mmason, I appreciate the positive attitude, man. TD here and we're right in it.

mmason said...

VT must have pix of the ABC guys naked at a bowl game the way they gush all over the turkeys like this...Bruce Smith is news to my granma--let us watch the game! We stopped 'em again and we're still alive. Who are we? Who are we? We are BC and this ain't done yet. The Kid needs to get it together and Logan needs to give him a plan.

Rob said...

Yes, cheerleaders are what we should be discussing right now.

Bravesbill said...

Might as well talk about something else now Rob. BC has had weeks to work on their fumbling problem, and have done nothing about it.

eagleboston said...

I thought we would lose this game due to the fact we have a young QB but I never imagined we would get blown out.

Now can we try Flutie? What have we got to lose? A berth in the Emerald Music City Nut MPC Computers Bowl?

BeantownBC85 said...

Why do we want to try Flutie? That doesn't show any fight. It's just a gimmick and clinging to the past.

Groundhog said...

well, that certainly looks like the nail in the coffin. too bad. i've got no problem with the announcers. if it were the other way around and BC were shellacking the hokies, they would be gushing over us too. what are you supposed to talk about? bc did everything wrong and VT did everything right. they beat the crap out of us. hopefully the hokies can make the ACC look good and win the O-Bowl

05Eagle said...

eaglesboston, I agree that we won't acheive that level until we win one of these, but I would not go so far as to say that we won't get there. Unless you're the Buffalo Bills and Bruce Smith, you can only get to the big game so many times before you finally pull one out. BC is on the right track, and I think eventually, we'll be able to go out and take one of these important games.

Ralph said...

Hey at least we learned something today- Davis is not the future. Tuggle or Chris Johnson is.

Ry said...

what is the point in trying Flutie anyway? It's not like he is the future of the program or anything?

Let Davis finish what he started....as bad as that might be. Let's look forward to seeing what Tuggle can do next year maybe

eagleboston said...

Let's give credit to the turkeys. They have played a great game and they were the better team tonight. We are just 1 or 2 playmakers and a rush defensive end a la Kiwi from getting over the hump.

Speaking of cheerleaders, check out the USC beauties next.

mmason said...

What else can go wrong? My well-placed optimism is about to go South to warmer climes. Just hate these Hokies and there 'tudes. The blogs will be filled with mentally defective redneck bravado that all have degrees from VT. Now the ABC guys have called the game with 8 minutes left and are chatting up USC...what a bummer.
It might be a good idea to hold our blame for this...Can we score 3 times on these guys? (That's Hawaiian brewed optimism talking, right?) How 'bout a Longboard, everybody?

Rob said...

The football team is channeling the hockey team in the few years before breaking through for the 2001 national championship. Think of it that way.

Boyd said...

Look, there's no way we beat a quality opponent when our defense plays like it did in the first half today. VT is a one-dimensional team, and they spent the first half running the ball down our throats. We live and die by our defense, and they didn't show up.

EAGLE_IN_LA said...

Mmason, it's Timbo ... im in Pasadena ... watching the BC game on ABC ... this is brutal to watch ... Davis missing guys right and left ... lets just hope BC pulls it together in time to keep the bowl streak alive.

eagleboston said...

I'll give you all one very good reason to try Flutie. he is the back-up QB. What happens if Davis gets hurt at the end of this game or in practice. Should we not have the back-up get some game time experience? Why get your starter hurt at the end of a blowout?

BeantownBC85 said...

How many people showed up for the game? ABC was very careful about camera shots

Bravesbill said...

USC always has the best and the most classy uniforms to boot. Those Davis passes were some of the most feeble attempts I've ever seen.

CT said...

The cheerleaders, sadly, are the most redeeming quality of this game.

Freshman QB...not much else can be expected. Too bad it happened when our D was as good as it is.

We're competitive. That's all you can ask for when you graduate nearly the entire team. That's a fact. Look at Ga. Tech, VT, NCSU, etc.

We don't get skill players--Ryan excepted--that get drafted.

We don't recruit the same kids that Fla. or Oklahoma does.

We have a host of innate disadvantages for kids from the south.

That's ok. Jags has us competing and if we accept the fact that we will never be Texas or Fla. and we're after "BC guys," then what should our goals really be? To be competitive.

This is about learning for Davis. I have a sneaking suspicion that we'll be okay in the future.

It's just too bad that a better bowl isn't a fall-back option, but then again, that's decidedly not the fault of the football team--a guy like Megwa who was put into a coma for his efforts--that falls on the rest of us.

Just b/c the ABC announcers don't get any of this...so what?

Ry said...

Rob, those teams were playing in the Frozen Four for three years before winning it all on the biggest stage...we're talking about playing teams in our own division here that are certainly beatable. Those hockey teams had great talent and lost close intense games. Our footballers just don't show up year after year.

I understand the point you are making, but this is a different problem entirely. At least we'll make it 9 straight bowl wins again.

eagleboston said...

The scary thing is Taylor is only a sophomore. To get over the BCS hump, we are going to have to find a way to stop this guy.

Can we score 3 TD's in five minutes?

Rob said...

Of course there are differences, Ry. I'm just saying from the perspective of a team trying to get over the proverbial hump. If you think about it in terms of a team maxing out its potential, it works since I think most of us would agree a BCS berth is the pinnacle for our program right now.

Either way, I'm just trying to put some positive spin on this and prevent bridge jumping.

Bravesbill said...

Beantown--nobody showed up for the game. There were tons of seats open in the lower tier of seating. And that is an excellent point Eagleboston. Giving Flutie some playing time couldn't hurt. It's not like the game will get any worse than it is now.

Ry said...

i hear ya rob...and i do agree about that. we probably played substantially over our heads and are lucky to be here right now at all

Groundhog said...

The people who did travel to this game should be reimbursed.

eagleboston said...

I know this is sour grapes, but I guarantee you that had Crane not been hurt, we would have beat the turkeys this year. Davis was just not ready for prime time. Not his fault. He is only a freshman for God's sake. He still wears braces!

eagleboston said...

What was the score last year?

How does Va Tech turn around from a regular season loss to dominate us both years? What is it they are doing that we are not?

Rob said...

True, Ry. I think as BC loyalists we both can be very disappointed with this but understanding of the limits on the program this year. I hope that no one rips into Jagz for this as overall he did a great job with this team. It's too bad we didn't have this defense last year or Matt Ryan this year, but ah well.

eagleboston said...

Another question, I have not been thinking beyond this game but now that it is a certainty, when and where is our bowl game?

BeantownBC85 said...

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry Christmas. We can't use revisionist history to make ourselves feel better. Fact is Crane was out and that's the hand we were dealt.

mmason said...

Well, we're done...the kid just didn't have it, our WR's didn't have it, we had tons of breaks and blew it like we'd never been there before. Our D got trampled by Evans. And Tyrod clocked us on broken plays. Sounds ike a typical loss to VT to me...history repeats itself... again, and we go to the Piece o'Bleep Bowl in Whatever Town on a Thursday night.
I just hope we don't have to listen to these ABC guys again until we win the National Championship someday. And what's with Tyrod and his funny hat? That's my final question--Love you guys--see you in Memphis, or Detroit or Fresno for the Bowl game. I'm going to mix a margarita in memory of what might have been and what was...Say Hallelujah!

eagleboston said...

I know Beantown. I said it ws sour grapes. It's just tough. All I want is one trip to the BCS in my lifetime. Just one.

eagleboston said...

Well, I know we are all disappointed, but it was a great and fun season. Tremendous coaching job by Jags.

It will not get any easier. We lose some key players to graduation and the ACC is extremely competitive. But, there is always next year and when we finally do get over the hump it will be that much sweeter.

Groundhog said...

see you guys at yet another second rate Forget-A-Bowl

CT said...

The second tier bowls are ticket-buyers' fault. Not the team's.

Congrats to Jags and the staff for a surprisingly above-average season.

One day we'll win this thing.

mmason said...

Hey Timbo! It was tough and we all had hope--but you know what Ben Franklin said,"He who lives on hope dies farting." It's hard to win a 'ship with a rookie redshirt frosh QB--and Tyrod basically was the difference. He escaped our mad rush and got free in our the 2ndary. It's a bad Vick from the VT past impersonation all over again.(a la big east deja vu nightmares) I agree that next year we face this dude again and I hope(there's that hope again) that Herzy stays and we have yet another comeback year. On to the Bowl Game, Timbo! Wherever City U.S.A., the Nut Bowl or the Ice Bowl or the Bean Bowl--we've played 'em all--maybe next year Eagle bro. Here's lookin' at y'all! Go Eagles!!!

EAGLE_IN_LA said...

Mason ... this program is on firm ground and will be just fine. Winning the who-gives-a-sh** bowl game will help keep that bowl game streak mantra running ... it helps in recruiting and its what the program has come to live by (even if we wish it were the Orange Bowl or another BCS game).

I'm encouraged by what I saw in our final three ACC games -- two tough ones on the road. Always believe in BC.

mmason said...

You're right, Timbo, of course. I think most of us always believe in BC--Lord knows I've been at it awhile. I always look back at being at ND in '92 when they pasted us 55-7 and really disrespected us on and off the field, players and fans all. I never forget moments like that when we go off-road like we did today. This was a game that could have gone either way, but for one or two recurring issues. Our QB problem was ever-present--everybody bitched about Crane and then when he won we were hesitantly optimistic--but knew there was a truth to his need to mature and it would take time--he never got that chance, and then we were back to Square One with the Kid--Dominique will be great next year--he'll put on weight and strength, and we'll design a system he can feel protected in--and his accuracy will be there pretty quickly. Sure, we wanted a miracle from a frosh with no game history in blue-chip competition, and that's asking too much. I truly believe that he will be a monster next year with some guys with hands. WR's are key in that regard.

The Bowl game will be cool--we had high hopes and perhaps misplaced expectations--it's a Jesuit thing to never say die and hang in for "deeds--not words" and this was truly a great season for a BC Eagle team that everyone thought would finish outta the money. For that and for Jags' and Spaz's and Logan's efforts with these great Eagle kids who got us to the 'ship again, we have to be grateful.

I'm firing up a good cigar and gladly celebrating our belief in BC. All you kids with newer Eagle wings than mine will do the same, I'm sure. Why? Because BC will be back in a big way in the bowl game and next year. We're not chasing the ghosts of past glory. We are BC and that means we're always coming back. (By the way--Charlie Weis was at Loyola L.A. this week, trying to talk Anthony Barr into playing for the Irish. We need Jags to get to Loyola and match Charlie. Anthony is the real deal--best back in SoCal as a junior. Write a note to him, will you? I have.) Go Eagles! On to the post season bowl game!

i bailed at the end of the third quarter to go surfing, winter waves vs a brutal day for davis was an easy decision.

I recall a dude named Ryan who had a brutal day as a frosh QB at the end of a first season while coming in for a great injured vet, who came back as a soph to kick a few butts for like three years and a big finish. Dominique is going to be a great QB some day--so surf's up at the wedge, Luch, in more ways than one. Go Eagles!

I've heard tons about Anthony Barr ... even saw him on TV (Fox-11) a few times on late-night news high school recaps on the sports wrap. He'd be a welcome addition to BC, of course. BC hardly ever has any guys from California on their roster (had one guy at the most in each of my four years there...now its Wes Davis and maybe I'm missing one or two others).

I was at that game where Matt Ryan threw 3 picks as a redshirt freshman QB ... same-looking performance today with D. Davis. He is going to be a stud ... wait until you get Logan on him for the winter, spring and summer workouts. We are going to be GOOD in 2009. If Haden can play up to where people expected him to be and we get Harris to improve on what he's already done, this offensive will be firing on all cylinders.

USC just made it 21-7 ... this one is getting ugly.

Hey Timbo, I'm hoping that we start to see that Weis and other coaches, like Pete Carroll, who know about guys like Anthony Barr and are recruiting him bitime (Pete goes to A-Barr's games to marvel at the boy), are pros--and this is America-a big country with lots of Jesuit educated kids who can play ball well and who need to be recruited.

Weis was here because of the USC game and he knows who USC is looking at-something I'm not sure that Jags is into--but maybe he should be--because last time I looked, USC is a perennial national powerhouse that runs on Cali players and West Coast talent in general. Why not grab a big time back from the Coast and trump USC? Jags needs to get out here now that we're waiting for a bowl game nod. A-Barr, as he's called in the press, is the big deal that the East coast doesn't seem to know about yet. He's a Jesuit product who loves Loyola--a good fit for BC. He's a Jr. with major skills, smart and highly touted. The really big programs want Anthony because he's an All-American waiting to happen. He flies, can catch the ball and runs thru people like they're buttah...all CIF
and he's a big back with brains. But he's also a Jesuit kid and we should jump on that part of the equation.

I know you're at the USC/UCLA game--the Bruins are doing their best, so hang in there. Anything can happen.

mason good point about davis/ryan, frustrating to watch the growing pains but hopefully it accelerates his development and pays off in the long run. back from a 2nd session, conditions stayed clean here in SD and always fun to be out there as the sun goes down. i hope davis and bc and these other stellar freshmen we have rise like the wedge during a pacific winter storm.
go eagles

When I saw that Spaz did not have a towel draped over his shoulder at the beginning of the game, I took it as a bad sign. Our D was a little slow, a little flat - just enough for TT to take advantage. They ran it right at us - give them the credit.

I hope D. Davis carries a football with him everywhere he goes between now and next September - otherwise he'll just continue to fumble the ball. He's got potential, but he has to stop fumbling like he does. I think we would have won this game with Crane - it was a bad break all the way around for this team when he went down at Wake Forest. Sure Davis pulled it out (after giving them the two easiest TD's of their season), but we were much better than Wake at that point - on our way to 30 - 0. Crane would have completed many more passes today - period.

I predict that Justin Tuggle will emerge as our starting quarterback next year, especially if he can hang on to the darn ball.

Thanks Eagles - you gave it your all, and we appreciate it. We're very proud of you.

Mmason is totally right. We were going on a wing and a prayer with a rookie qb for the past few weeks and the luck just ran out. You almost never see a team win a 'ship with a freshman at qb. That is one position where you need experience or incredible talent when you get to the elite level (and Va Tech is an elite team).

I caution everyone on expectations for next year. We should be better on offense, but the qb position will still be inexperienced. Defensively, we will have to replace 2 great tackles and at least one linebacker. I think Clemson, Florida State and NC State will be much improved and we still have to face Va Tech in the regular season (why couldn't we have been matched with Duke?). It would be great to get back to the 'ship but very few teams, even great ones, can do that 3 times in a row.

Jags did redshirt 19 players this year so it will be fun to see who emerges as the next BC stars. I hope we can find a rush defensive end so we can finally pressure the opposing qb's and I pray that Jags goes out a recruits a kicker.

Hey Luch, I'm an old Manhattan Beach BC guy who lived in El Porto on 42nd Street for years--and I fully believe that the Kid, a.k.a. Dominique, will be a force next year and beyond. Our Boston Bros & Sis' must understand how intemse it was for Davis to play in big games with no prep time to speak of. ramming for football games against the Beamers & Fosters in Div. finals and 'ships is totally NUTZ. The kid was baptized in fire with gasoline holy water.

Our vet Defense didn't see it coming--think how the Kid felt, and with his whole Fla. hood in the stands to see Jr. make good. Too much for one redshirt frosh to handle, even vs. Buffalo, let alone VT and the Terps. The learning curve has a bend in it for a reason, right? Like w/ the waves, you got to keep paddling out until you catch a good one--Davis just wasn't ready yet for big sets in Maui with his newbie b.g.. It will come, though and he'll rock out next year. Watch how he handles the bowl game--he'll be pissed and it will be a shadow of the future.

i admit to fully losing perspective, i actually work in sports and should know better but sometimes being a fan of the alma mater with a chance of going to the OB clouds the judgment ya know.
love manhattan b, uncle bills chocolate chip pancakes rule.
recruit southern california harder jags, lots of studs to be found here and instead of ND they need to hear from a catholic school that can actually ball...

How good on a scale of 1-10 does BC recruit the Jesuit HSs?

St Iggy, St X, Loyola LA, Rockhurst, Tampa to name a few

There has been some recent news you might like to hear.Obama is making it better for us already! There has been an increase of money availability to everyone. Due to recession there is increased funding for all types of grants. Even lenders are bending over backwards to bail you out too. Regardless of statistics, there is people getting tons of cheap money for personal use, investments, start businesses, buy homes, pay off debt, and more. Bailout is for YOU
