Still no staff news and other links

Towards the end of this article Rivals mentions Logan's departure but speculates more on his replacement. Many BC fans are wondering why coordinator replacements have yet to be named. I expect resolution this week. The reason for the delay is that outsiders were considered for both spots. In the end, I think familiarity, timing and money will force Spaz to promote from within. I also expect BC to back fill for any open lower level staff spots with familiar/connected names.

BC rugby won the Atlantic Coast Invitational. Congrats to them and all the people in "club" sports. These guys and girls in clubs compete with little to no fan or financial support. (Thanks to Stuart for the link.)

ESPN came up with a convoluted way to measure a program's prestige. BC came in 40th. Does anyone even care?

Rice claims he is remaining positive, but his quotes and body language say other things. I hope the team starts to turn things around tonight.

The BCI guys get into the spirit of inauguration day.

Regarding the Rugby...looks like they lost all three games the first day. How are they even in the semifinals?

BC on the bubble...

The ESPN prestige ranking is really stupid. Consider the foundational question of the rankings

"Which school in the ACC has had the best football program over the past 72 seasons? ESPN's Prestige Rankings has the answer."

the past 72 years? Do we care today that the "iron dukes" won a Nc in the 1940s (?). the ranking system is really bogus.

But equally bogus is HD's thoughts on the matter. HD says a bunch of dumb things that give one the impression that HD knows jack about football.

Mr. Spraak--

It seems BC benefited from being an an awful "pool". Both NC State and GT got their arses handed to them with huge losses. The BC team lost all of their first three games, but lost two within 7 points, which meant that BC's 2 point (you get 1 for a close loss) were better than NC State's and GT's 0 points.

By default, they were the representative from that pool.

Talk about stepping up when it matters! Kudos to the rugby team!

BCMike -

Looks like you're absolutely right. But that begs the question of why they are playing pool games against opponents not in their pool? Isn't that the point of pool play?

Whatever, I, like you, am happy for them. And if a very strange seeding/pool play system helped them, all the better.

"I can’t make anyone else want it as badly as I want it. But if they see me playing as hard as I can every night, they’ll follow."

I wish this was true.

Should Rice start with making free throws (if you make them, they will follow)?

Well Mod, the past 70-odd years are pretty important if you consider prestige to be a judgment of a program's history. Otherwise Florida and Miami would be 1-2.

BeanBAG85 --

70 years? Puh-lease

Maybe 20 years is relevant.

Florida certainly is a premier program and has been for some time, and should be one of the top "prestige" programs ...

However, it is nice to see the "U" fading into the sunset....

The NESN guys just pointed out the terribleness of the BC inbounding plays. So it's not just the people here noticing it. If they don't get the deep lob, it's either a steal or a timeout.

Ryan said...

2 more turnovers. It's official, we have no inbounds plays. I just watched two players try to beat a press by just turning their backs to the players. No screens, no movement. Unreal.

Ry said...

Be mindful, these aren't really NESN guys...they're with Raycom or whatever it is. And their coverage never favors us...earlier after I was sure that there had been at least 3 blocks by BC they showed a stat that GT led in that category 4-0.

That said, we may be the worst inbounding team since my sixth grade CYO squad

CT said...

The FoxSports South guys said, "wow, BC's inbounds plays are quite an adventure."

For the fourth or fifth time.

What's the definition of insanity?

Ryan said...

I smell a meltdown. Good thing we cant A) handle a press B) inbound the ball or C) not commit stupid fouls.

CT said...

Up 14 with six minutes left.

Up 4 with four minutes left.

This team put both feet on the brakes when it mattered most.

A remarkable inability to attack pressure...

Ryan said...

What's the over/under for the times we get the ball advanced past half court? 3 max? Is anyone doing anything? Do we have players or coaches actually paying attention?

CT said...

Wow. Wow. What an amazing collapse. BC looks awful.

What is Skinner doing during practice?

Ralph said...

Holy shit - Is anyone else watching this meltdown? We cannot in bound the ball and especially cannot break the press. Southern and Trapani fouled out already.

Talk about a classic choke job.

Ralph said...

Better Question CT - What is he doing during the timeouts?

CT said...

Honestly, this is among the worst stretches of basketball I've ever seen. Ever.

CT said...

Go to the basket, Rice...horrible shot at the end.

If ever a team was looking at a loss going into overtime, it's this one tonight....

I literally can't believe how poorly coached this team looks.

05Eagle said...

Win or lose this game, this team is becoming almost unbearable to watch. Georgia Tech is not a good team and the failure to beat a simple press is awful. The team doesn't have the talent to overcome mistakes and Skinner's complete inability to draw up simple press breaks and inbounds plays is pathetic. Unlike Ry, even my 6th grade coach had plays against the press that didn't involve our shortest player catching the first pass in the corner where he could be trapped every single time.

CT said...

05Eagle, you're exactly right. I'm not one for hyperbole, but that 4 1/2 minute stretch late in the game was nearly unbearable to watch.

Then they get aggressive in overtime and attack and get the lead back.

70 seconds left and up two with the ball...please, attack...

Ryan said...

I really don't think its hyperbole, that was in my opinion as well, the worst stretch of basketball I've seen at any level, against a terrible team no less.

Ralph said...

Wow that is quite possibly the ugliest win I have seen in quite some time. Just wow.

CT said...

Despite the win, I can't say I share the optimism for this year's team that others might have. That is NOT a bubble team. Ga. Tech is now 0-4 in conference play.

They won without three starters at the end of regulation. Yet rarely have I seen a team win and felt more empty than I do.

A team capable of playing that badly--from the six minute mark to the 90 second mark in regulation--reflects very poorly on the coaching staff. 19 games into the season, this is not good. We sort of know what we have at this point.

I can easily see how Harvard beat us.

That team makes me want to drink. A lot.

05Eagle said...

I applaud the effort in the overtime by Tyrese and the rest of the guys. Also didn't hurt when the Georgia Tech kid had his Freddie Brown moment and threw that pass directly to Rice when we were up two. That being said, maybe Gene should step in with Skinner and threaten to fire him unless he starts actually coaching this team.

We just needed a win badly and we got it...ugly as it may be....maybe we will now play our game instead of playing scared like we have since the Harvard game. The two consecutive road trips couldn't have helped. Now we have a few days to recoup and get a Saturday home game against a beatable team. It would be nice to grab some momentum here.

CT said...

Yeah, we were given a big present, neatly wrapped up with a bow on it when Peacock neglected to match up his jersey color with the recipient's.

Tyrese played well inside of 90 seconds left in the game and then again in OT--without which we would have lost.

But if they didn't have momentum after beating UNC, I can't imagine them capturing any now.

I'm pretty disappointed with the team. Skinner needs to figure out how to light a fire under this team pretty quickly. Judging by his in-game adjustments tonight (and in the past), I don't see that happening.

How does a Div. I scholarship player airball a free throw? Do you know how hard that is to do?

That's beside the point, but 15 minutes after the game ended and I'm still shaking my head at the apparent lack of direction that this team showed tonight.

Any conference road win is a good one, but the fundamentals (or lack thereof) are going to doom this team in the long-run.

CT said...

On the bright side, Jackson is destined for good things.

On the not-so-bright side, Derrick Favors, Ga. Tech's recent commit, will bury this team next year. By himself.
