Interviews commence

The original speculation candidate list is holding up so far and the early interviews have gone well.

Despite a pending extension with Richmond, Chris Mooney is going forward with the BC coaching search process.

This is a pretty glowing article on Ed Cooley.

Steve Donahue will only leave Cornell for a "home run" job. Cornell bloggers think Donahue would be a good fit.

Here is another roundup of the search.

fun point in the Cooley article...when the writer says would any players leave with Cooley. I would happily accept young point guard Derek Needam as part of the Cooley package....

Wow, did Christopher L. Gasper apply to BC and get denied? The tone of his article about BC basketball in the Globe is just short of this: "BC basketball sucks, has always sucked and will always suck! So there!"

I think the Glasper article is hilarious- he comes off as resoundingly bitter.

Christopher Gasper, BU College of Communications '01.

I hate the "know your place" theme of Gasper's article. It's such a straw man. I don't know any BC fans who think the football or basketball teams are at the same level as Florida (in football) or Kentucky (in basketball). No one is calling BC a powerhouse. And no one is comparing BC sports to the Red Sox or Patriots in terms of attention in Boston.

But we know we have a good program competing in a BCS conference. Obviously it should be our goal to win our conference and in basketball to make a Final Four.

The whole "know your place" thing is so tired. Gasper's lazy. He threw that column up within a few hours of the Skinner announcement. It's just a typical knee-jerk reaction of media members who don't actually follow BC sports.

If we don't lose any important players to transfer, and we still get our 3 freshmen, we can be okay next year. Plenty of talent on their way out of the league.

Al-Farouq Aminu, Malcolm Delaney, and Sylven Landesberg have declared for the draft. Favors probably will.

Graduating: Greivas Vasquez, Trevor Booker, Jon Scheyer, etc.

Agreed Erik. I hope the new coach at least attempts to put a motion offense into place. We have no low post scoring right now, let's use our wing strength. I want to see Reggie run, he has the potential to be a dynamic player

Am I the only one who is depressed with this coaching pool we currently have. Donahue seems to be our top candidate? I'm not saying he's bad, but there isn't a single (realistic) name that has been thrown out there that gives me any sense of excitement. I understand we're not going to land a big name, but from the looks of it, there doesn't seem to be a single "perfect match" for BC.

Frank -- I could not agree with you more.

The known pool of candidates is lackluster. Is this the list GDF says he, as a good AD, kept in his top drawer??

Each candidate really lacks a strong track record of sustained success. Cooley(66-59), Donahue (78-62), Mooney (42-39 at Richmond) have had only decent records in middling leagues. These records seems to predict mediocrity. Same for Amaker (43-43 at Harvard). Coen (66-62)seems to be Skinner 2.0, but does have a good track record for recruiting (if press acccounts are to be belived)

GDF probably is not a good judge of character and coaching ability -- look at the hiring and firing of Jags and the hiring of Spaz. He is into power and seems to have pulled the firing trigger -- once again -- too early and without a good plan.

But I am hoping for a surprise GDF. Please surprise me and get rid of the current "O" crowd (and amaker too)

I am not excited at all either. Gene never expands the candidate pool. He always has his favorites and doesn't go beyond that much. I pulled hard for Jim Harbaugh (while he was still at USD) after TOB left, but he wasn't even on the radar. And did he really give anyone a chance before he hired Spaz? Gene is quickly building a track of record of not being able to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of any coach. The key to getting a job is to get on his good side or be a former assistant. Not exactly the recipe for success.

"Fit to BC - Irish Catholic and has an Autistic son"

Both comments are cringe inducing. Let's hope having an Irish-American last name or having a special needs child are not in any way factors. yeesch.

Liked the rest of your comment.

Donahue seems like the best of the 'O' canidates, but i hope we can do better. 20 years in the Ivy League does not sound good. Prior to getting Foote, he did have a pretty middle-of-the-road record.

But I do acknolwedge that he could be a good choice, just not an exciting choice.

The reason GDF doesn't expand a candidate pool is because he always has a working list of candidates - probably reviewed weekly even in the best of times for a sport. So when he needs to make a coaching change, he doesn't then have to start thinking of names.

If a coach left us, it would be a little more of a scramble. This one was clearly more planned, so his list was planned well ahead of the dismissal of Al and certainly before Tuesday's announcement.

Well said Mod, I would also not hire someone based on the ability of a schools sports marketing department sending out an e-mail to the alumni database.

GDF should have a list, regardless if a coach picks up and leaves abruptly its good business. Clearly GDF has to appease the BC majority, but to make a decision based on that would be ill advised. NO to Donahue!

I removed my post because what I said was clearly out taken out of context.

Cheers.

Primary argument against Coen being Skinner 2.0 - he recruits...well.

I'm just hopeful that the people who make the decisions don't fall victim into summarily labeling a candidate as anything as misleading as "Skinner 2.0" or similarly dismiss someone for something as witty as having an "o" in their name.

But then again, we are talking about GDF here and nothing he does would really surprise me.

mod34b said...

RY -- i too hope that GDF is not getting advice from blog commenters, including goofy comments about 'o's and 2.0!!

I am the only one whos excited about Cooley as a candidate? I feel like hes enough like Al to easily transition the program and players but different enough to provide the change and spark of energy the program needs. He is very enthusiastic and energetic and would have no problem become the "face" of the program as BC is his "dream job". Also, his record at Fairfield is misleading as he overtook a terrible program but his teams saw a steady rise in success every year he was there.
