Here is a Q&A with Jared Dudley. He mentions coaching at BC, but refers to the job as a stepping stone. Et tu, Jared?
Now that Pitt has a new coach, BC is trying to talk one of their commits Terrell Chestnut into coming to Boston.
Ohio lineman Joe Thuney is still waiting on a BC offer.
Future BC QB Christian Suntrup is playing basketball for his high school. That sort of athleticism is usually a good sign of a recruits athleticism.

I'm impressed with how well we are taking care of the ball, in a new/more uptempo offense. Only 5 TOs tonight. Obviously it will get harder, but I'm still impressed.
In terms of good coaches using BC as a stepping stone, personally, I have no problem with it. Atl and Gene may only want guys who's dream job is BC, but frankly if a guy's dream job is BC then he's not nearly ambitious enough to succeed at the levels we want this program to reach.
ATL-
How about some love for the women's hoops team? They're undefeated (11-0), ranked, and off to the best start in program history.
athleticism is a good sign of a athleticism.
Whaaat?
and Suntrup's not even starting! If you talking the Drew Brees type of athleticism, Suntrup should not only be starting, but should be all-state!
It is a stepping stone. The job was available just months ago, and not even BC alum/cheater Bruce Pearl (who isn't even in the top echelon of coaches) wouldn't seriously consider it.
Spaz extended as HFC for 2 years, through the 2015 season.. WOW
Uggghhhh.. Spaz is going to be the HC for the next 5 seasons. How awful -- 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015!!!
what is he getting paid?
Stability and integrity are the reasons.... Motivator, coaching ability, ability to attract high quality OC were not mentioned.
My initial reaction is that this really sucks. Really sucks. Miami get Golden, Duke get Cutcliffe, Maryland probably gets Leach, FSU gets Fisher, etc. We get 2 more years of a guy with no flash, no push, and no ability to coach in game. yes, Spaz is a nice guy and a likebale guy. and yes, recruiting is getting better. But still, BC should be able to do much better than retaining Spaz.
per HD, this is what GDF said:
“Frank Spaziani has done a terrific job in his first two seasons as our head football coach,” athletic director Gene DeFilippo said in a prepared statement. “There is no doubt in my mind that he has our program headed in the right direction. He is a man of uncompromised integrity and principle, and he has provided great stability to our program. He has overcome some obstacles along the way and is building the foundation for great things to come. This contract extension is an indication of the university’s confidence in him.”
“I am very appreciative of this contract extension,” Spaziani said in the release. “As I have said in the past, I am honored to be the head football coach at Boston College; there’s no other place I would rather be. I look forward to leading this program into the future.”
Crap..seems like BC is doubling down on Spaz. If the Spaz experiment doesn't work, Gene will be out of a job. On another note, did you guys see that Shamari Spears was kicked off UNC-Charlotte a few days ago?
I have a feeling that Spaz "earned" this extension due to the team's magnificent recovery from 2-5 to end the season on a five-game winning streak. Unfortunately, the five-game losing streak that preceded that was mostly the coaching staff's doing as they relied on QBs that had no business starting, they handcuffed the offense in general, and showed no ability to manage the game. I am absolutely disappointed in this news. Spaziani is nothing more than a placeholder (for what, I don't know) coach and I don't see why Gene is in denial about that.
any chance that the extension was the spoonful of sugar to make him take his medicine and lose his geriatric offensive mastermind?
Ry -- you read my mind. Maybe the extension was to give Spaz a feeling of security so he can bring in a real OC without feeling like he is bringing in his replacement.
After the 2015 season, Spaz will be close to turning 69! and GDF turning 65 ... maybe they will then both go to some nice warm place in Florida and discuss what could have been! BAH!
This imputing of a good motive, though, is 'silver lining' thinking. Still very disappointing
Well, crap and double crap. If Tranq is still there, I will be really depressed.
I'm not so sure that the 5 game skid would be different had Rettig started every game. He would be further along the learning curve that is for sure. It might have mattered in the bowl game. But then again,.....
Lot's of posts have slammed recruiting. Now that recruiting seems to have been improved greatly and we might just have a super team for next year, what next to blame. ATL and some others had ridiculously high expectations for this season. I actually saw dreams of 12-0. The same mentality is all doom and gloom about the future. Yes, a new OC is needed. Spaz uses his entire staff for he game plan. tranq was part of that and possibly he knew enough about the talent and experience to temper the plan accordingly. I am not saying that SPaz is another Belichick but it proves that flash and bombast don't win games, so all the talk about flashy coaches is just so much talk.
I think it's (hopefully) mostly a recruiting ploy. I'm sure Spaz's age, the questions about his job security after the 5 L's in a row, and all the turnover in the league were being used against us so this makes it look the like program is stable and heading in the right direction, unlike the volatility at the U, UNC, Maryland, etc...
Everyone can calm down. This was nothing more than an agreement so that any possible recruits didn't fret that Spaz might be gone next year. I wouldn't be surprised if this extension actually lowers the buyout BC would have to pay Spaz if he gets fired.
Joseph -- c'mon tell the truth. Are you some lacky that works for Spaz. Spaz's water boy maybe?
"I am not saying that Spaz is another Belichick but it proves that flash and bombast don't win games, so all the talk about flashy coaches is just so much talk."
Agree 100%.
Actually, I have been pleasantly pleased with Spaz. The cupboard was literally bare on the offensive side of the ball when he took over. QB's and 4-star running backs abandoned ship, then his star linebacker was out with cancer. Despite all of this, he managed an 8-5 season and nearly knocked off USC.
We were all disappointed with this season, especially on offense, but Spaz was forced to go to a true freshman QB and, due to injuries, several young wide receivers. All of them were playing very well by the end of the season, which shows that Spaz is a very decent recruiter. NC State, Notre Dame and Maryland are the 3 games I wish we could have back, but despite losing these, we still managed a 7-win season. And, we are going to a bowl, something even national power Texas cannot say.
I agree Tranquill is not the right fit and I hope a change is made after next season (if not before). But, Spaz is doing a very good job in my opinion and I want to see how he does in the next 2 seasons before giving up on him.
I am not saying we need a flashy coach. we don't
We need a coach who can motivate the entire team to come out in the first series -- O or D -- ready to play; a coach who can make in-game adjustments, a coach who can win over the media with some savvy, and not semi-doofusy remarks.
So Flashy is not the BC way, but dull and unsavvy ain't too good either.
and yes I agree, someone in Spazland is recruiting well and some stability at HC is good.
Curious about one thing: do the players like Spaz? respect him?
Okay, last year USC was not exceptional, just like this year they weren't exceptional, either.
I don't agree with the first set of posters who were saying it's okay for BC to be used as a stepping stone. Do you guys think we're going to magically transcend to the next level with a coach who has his eye on another school? We need a coach who will stay with us for a long time and who gets our school. I loved watching Jared Dudley play, but don't expect any offers in 10 years if that's still his attitude.
As for Spaz, I am not thrilled. I'm glad we have some coaching stability, but this is the same person who manned the helm this year, a year that even if we win our bowl game should be considered a failure.
It's easy to say that the dreams of 12-0 were overreaching (when is a perfect season ever really imaginable?), but we had an easy, easy schedule. Notre Dame and NC State were the only games that weren't close, and those other three (FSU, Maryland, VTech) could have been won by us with a different coaching strategy and if we had dropped Shinskie sooner to give Rettig more experience.
As for the other ACC coaches, I'm not really threatened by them. Jimbo Fisher is no godsend and just because FSU went (and lost in) the ACC championship game doesn't mean they're back.
Never ceases to amaze me when I hear the BC Blues bein' played whenever Coach Spaz's the topic au jour...At this point what we really know is that we had nutty expectations early on (12-0?)--no way our kids were going to dominate anyone this year with no scoring offense, a rookie squad of QB's and Tranquilopicus Rex running Montel up the middle into a stacked front 90% of the time.
We played in a weak conference this year and went nowhere fast. Our defense kept us from total embarrassment, we had an All-America in Kid Keuchly, kicked alot of FG's and saw Herzy do remarkable things. (And our fans didn't show up much at home...but Andre did and there's hope in that.)
Spaz has an eternity to prep for a ranked team in the SF Bowl that rocked Boise's World...Now we'll see what we got from the 5 straight win BC comeback team: Nevada is no Duke or 'Cuse Lite. If(and it's a big one) our kids show up and put some serious points up, then Spaz will be Reborn and Loved. The D will be tested, but this is truly Spaz's Big Moment. He blows this and the Heights will become the House of Blues. He wins and a new era begins.
Go Eagles! Merry, happy, holy, bright Christmas! See ya in The City by the Bay.
