More awards for Anderson and other links

BC basketball's new hope Ryan Anderson was just named the Los Angeles Times's player of the year. I usually don't put too much faith into these regional awards, but standing out in talent rich area like southern California is a good sign.

Carolyn Swords earned honorable mention All America honors.

BC target Mike Strizak keeps saying good things about Rutgers.

Brian Gibbons signed with the Penguins.

The REAL Atlanta -- 71,617

I know football is supposed to be king in the South (right, CT?), but apparently it's not. More like the bridesmaid.

here is why: 71,617

Per todays WSJ: 71,617 is "The attendance at Sunday's Wrestlemania XXVII at Atlanta's Georgia Dome. That's 2,407 more people than attended January's Falcon-Packers NFL playoff game at the stadium"

How does anyone stand living down there!!

I don't suppose this could have anything to do with the fact that a wrestling ring is much smaller than a football field, allowing them to set up additional seats on the field...

mod34b said...

DOubleEagle -- no it doesn't. It has to do with the true culture of the south!

makes a person wonder, doesn't it.

Even with more seats available who would want to fill them. Bill, do you live there by choice?

not to show my east coast bias but is Cali really a hotbed for basketball talent? The last good/great college player to come out of there? Baron davis?

No disrespect to Craig Smith or Jared Dudley, but neither of those guys were highly touted, so they got where they are through hard work.

to be fair, the Rock was involved...who wouldn't want to see the People's Champ?

Raj, off the top of my head, high lotto picks in the last few years -- Paul Pierece, Brandon Jennings, James Harden, DeMar Derozan, Jrue Holiday are all from the LA area. I think Pac-10 bball is usually weak but given the size of CA, being the best player is pretty impressive.

Reggie was the Gatorade POY for CO and he turned out well. Anytime you're the best in state I think its a good sign.

Hey Mod34B - Don't knock it until you've tried it. I grew up in New York, moved to Atlanta via Chapel Hill after grad school, and miss it every day after I had to leave for a job in 09. Friendly people, affordable living, cheap entertainment, great sports, incredible weather, and a direct flight to everywhere. It isn't a perfect place, but the people aren't a negative compared to what I was used to in New York and Boston.

Runger -- I am just joshing. The south can be wonderful. Heck, i'd probably take a good 'ol boy over a cranky Masshole any day.

I keep telling my wife we should retire to the Outerbanks (one of the fishing village) some day, but she's not buying it.

In terms of high school basketball, states like California, New York, Texas, New Jersey, Florida, and maybe even Georgia always produce the most Division 1 basketball recruits every year.

And Pac-10 basketball is known for high-scoring offenses with traditional powers like UCLA and Arizona (even though Washington has been at the top for a few years now). Excluding recent years (when almost every player on UCLA and USC decided to leave early), I wouldn't necessarily call it a weak conference for basketball.

Mod, I'm actually quite surprised you know how to read the Wall Street Journal.

Come join the millions of other northerners who have figured it out.

D-Murph, re: pac-10:

since 2000, NCAA college bball champs:

ACC: 5 (duke x 2, NC x 2, maryland)
big east: 3 (uconn x 2, cuse)
SEC: 2 (florida x 2)
big 10: 1 (mich st)
big 12: 1 (kansas)

pac-10 was runner-up in 01 (zona) and 06 (ucla).
overall, in my opinion, you aren't a "power conference" if you have 1 title and 3 championship game appearances in 15 years.

CT Nice to see you emerge from your spider hole for Spring

wSJ is written at an 8th grade level,so I can handle it, but frankly I prefer the NY Post and the Drudge Report

By the way, Snooki was in Atlanta for Wrestlemania - classing up the joint (relatively speaking)

D-Murph said...

i guess i got caught up in the recent history with ucla losing in finals in 06 and making it to the final four in 07 and 08. i thought that the pac-10 had a little better showing, but obviously, i was wrong, el miz...

Go and google the list of POYs from the last 20 years in California. You'll be impressed, trust me.

Raj said...

the pac 10 is most definitely weak....

downtown_resident: couldn't find the list you speak of. I googled gatorade national player of the year, and only 2 were from CA in the last 25 years. Baron Davis and Jrue Holliday
