Three bigger issues than Running Back depth

Andre Williams hurt his ankle in BC's third scrimmage. Combined with Montel Harris's knee, BC's once deep backfield now becomes a major question mark. Most fans are trying to stave off panic. I remain worried about the season, but not about running back. We still have capable RBs in Finch and Boyd and Williams and Harris could both return in September. However, these three things still have me more worried as we prepare for the season.

1. The offensive line
It doesn't matter who runs the ball if no one can block for them. Nate Richman is hurting and now we are moving Spinney from Center to LG to replace him. I think this is a bad idea. I would rather see Spinney stay at Center -- where he's been solid. Given how bad our OLine has looked to start the past two seasons, I don't know who I can tru

2. Kevin Rogers running the offense.
Hard to believe but Rogers hasn't called plays since 2001. In that regard Tranquill was more relevant. I think Rogers will be an improvement but I do wonder how he will manage the offense and manage the clock. The season really depends on him and Rettig.

3. The defensive backfield
Injuries are forcing Spaz to mix things around. You also have to wonder how the offense is able to move the ball with such ease. If the defense is vulnerable in the passing game, this could hurt BC once the games count and we face go passers.

I want Williams and Harris back as soon as possible. But still (stupidly?) think we can still compete without either. The issue now is will these other units step up.

"Tranquill was more relevant"... "how the offense is able to move the ball with such ease"...

Sounds like "glass half empty" outlook to me. We've complained for years about our offense not doing enough in the pre-season scrimmages. Now that we finally got what we want, we gotta find the negative in it? Perhaps #2 is part of the reason #3 has been an issue in the preseason.

Do we think Javorski is #3 after Finch & Kimble? He's actually pretty fun to watch.

That said I think we'll get Williams or Harris back before we got to that point.

All Rogers has to do is show up to be better than 3rd&9quill.

I can't believe you said that Tranquill was more relevant - wow. The man was dated, way past his relevance and just plain awful. He was a terrible hire who set us way back.

Barring any further significant development in his injury, Williams should be back to practice soon and carrying the rushing load for Boston College until Harris is healthy enough to return.

In response to Jeff's comment -

I was wondering the same thing ATL was, mostly because the scrimmage write ups usually mention Rettig making big pass plays happen after our recievers get by the secondary.

I think there's some cause for concern because last year, our WRs couldn't get separation from anyone, and now they're burning guys set up in the 10 yard cushion? Plus Spaz just came out and called the defense "soft" the other day.

Now of course, I think it's well within reason to say that maybe the WRs have improved. The majority were true frosh and adjusting to the college game without the benefit of a redshirt year. Plus Larmond's return is a big boost to the corps. But I still think there's some concern to our pass d this year.

Not liking all of these injuries, but I guess it is better to happen now than mid-season.

And Okoroha is reportedly dismissed from the team. So there really is cause for conern with the defensive backfield. It's getting pretty thin.

Having spoken with several players I can say with confidence that the team supports Rogers.

Hello muddah! Hello faddah! It appears that not all is rosey in Camp Granada. That is a good sign for Kevin Rogers. There is definitely a "hard wind blowing" and it appears to be a "head wind". It's now a matter of waiting for "Puff the Magic Dragon" to run out of the tunnel and then we'll know. So far, so good.

I don't Bill was saying he's heard Rogers will be terrible at his job one way or another. Clearly, Rogers has opened up the playbook, as our plays and scrimmages have indicated. That doesn't translate to immediate success in game management. ATL's point was that Tranquil has had more recent experience. But read: that does not mean he's better. We may find out that Tranquil was better suited for the job (which I highly doubt). But at the moment, we don't know how Rogers will perform under pressure. It's the same for our fresh highly touted recruits.

I am truly shocked that some are wondering if Rogers will be an upgrade over 3rd and 9quill. ATL had a post a few weeks ago about BC's totall offense #s and where we ranked in the ACC/NCAA last yr. We were one of the worst offensive teams in the country! Rogers has to improve over the Tranquill "run-run-pass-punt" which shouldnt be hard.

Rettig and the offense has done a great job this preseason, so it further perplexes me.

The secondary depth is worrisome, but our coaching staff seems to always hide the weaknesses well. How has Albert Louis Jean looked?

Dre Williams should be fine by week 1, that is good to see. Even without Montel Im confident in the RBs.
