Quote of the day

From the Globe:

DeFilippo dismissed any notion that Spaziani’s future at BC is in doubt.

“Spaz is a terrific coach and doing a great job" he said.

I think at this point, Gene is so tied to Spaz's tenure that Spaz could survive an 0-12 season.

Also, I don't agree with Gene's assessment of Spaz doing a "great job" but I do think the team is close to breaking through and will rattle off some wins here shortly.

Some quote! But one I do not think anybody should take it at face value. I view it more as a comment to keep Spaz calm before he dispatches him and one designed to keep recruits calm too. GDF needs to motivate Spaz to salvage as much as he can from this season-from-hell.

Now while GDF is not a good judge of football coaches, he does have impressive politicial skills.

It took a deft touch for GDF as an ACC committe member to push the expansion agenda early and "northernly." If BC was given carte blanche power to improve the ACC to its own liking, it could hardly have come up with a better result (ok, ND too).

So, while we are all dumping on GDF as the bad football micro-manager, we should all give GDF praise for getting BC to the ACC and NOW making the ACC a much better place for BC, and for BC fans. In short, GDF has done a great job in securing BC's long term interests. Thank you, GDF!

It will be a lot of fun seeing Syracuse and Pitt at Alumni on a regular basis! Now if we can just get a better product on the field and a better game day experience!

I am speechless. How can an 0-3 coach who just lost to Duke football being doing a great job. He is in la la land and is there anybody at the school who can give Gene a dose of reality?

The squib kickoff was a nightmare.

I wanted BC to go for the TD at the end, but I can understand settling for a FG when it is that close. Either option can backfire.

But you'd like to see ONE decision the guy makes work out, or ONE decent MA recruit sign with BC, or one victory in the books before you say he's doing a great job.

I could care less what GDF says. I care quite a bit more about what he does in the future.

Here is a thought for Gene:

Fire Spaz and hire Mike Leach. Do what Maryland was 48 hours away from doing before they wussed out and hired Edsall. Ticket sales would jump and enthusiasm in the program would be off the charts......instantly.

Let's not forget that under Leach Texas Tech was at or near the top in graduation rates for public universities. Sure, he has some baggage, but by all accounts it sounds like Craig James' kid and Craig James himself didn't exactly have unclean hands.

1 week today after possible loss to UMASS, GDF: "Excellent! Our program has never been stronger."

That quote reminds me of Baghdad Bob telling news teams that there were no American tanks approaching the city.

Who's the little bald dude riding that shark? Oh, it's Gene DeFilippo! Seriously, whenever an AD or any boss gets asked this question by a mainstream media reporter (one he can't just dismiss), the shark has been jumped and the end is nigh. I wonder how Spaz's back/knee/BP/GERD is doing ...

"Spaz coaches not to lose and yet we keep losing. He sucks and we will cut ties with him at the end of the season." DeFilipo said.

seriously what do you expect him to say? spaz is walking the plank -- no way he sticks around if we win 3 games or less.

the team has improved slightly every week yet we seem to find new ways to lose. not to mention, the schedule gets A LOT harder.

Bill, I love your optimism, but having watched the team in person last weekend, it is clear that (except for Keuchly) there is a lack of energy and focus on this team. I can't really speak to the level of talent on the team, but they appeared slow and in some cases, uninterested, in last weekend's game. At one point, Rettig started jogging to the sideline with his head down after an incomplete pass with THIRD down coming up because he clearly thought it was fourth down (there had been a penalty on first down). You can't have your QB, the field general, making a simple mistake like that.

There is no one on the team, from the head coach on down, that seems at all fired up.

in the event that Spaz does get fired, who would be on the short list of candidates - now that we missed out on London and Golden? any chance of getting someone like Leach?

BC is 5-9 in their last 14 games and trending downward. If we get mired in mediocrity, combined with northeast schools joining the ACC, we're going to lose any competitive advantages we had...
