Alright eagles fans, I continue to be positive about the talent, attitude, and heart of the players on this team. This coaching staff can't keep them down forever, let's go into Blacksburg and show them something. Call me crazy, but I continue to think we win this one.

BC 24 - 20 in a stunner.

Go Eagles.

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

Two things:

We actually went after a punt.

VTech starts with 8 men in the box, everyone w/in 8 yars of line of scrimmage. As Spurrier says, you have to throw deep to get them out of the box. C'mon Brock, let's do it.

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

YES! Showing some creativity, no one even looked at Rettig. Great start, let's go Eagles!

eagleboston said...

Holy Crap!!! We scored first!

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

Why do we constantly run 2 yard patterns on 3rd and long? Get to the chains.

Benjamin said...

This game seems to precariously be giving me hope. Our LB corps is getting work done.

Benjamin said...

It's like salt on the wound watching that Matt Ryan clip.

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

I love Spiffy as a returner, also, are we playing a 3-4? Seems like we've had Divitto, Keyes, Kuechly, AND KPL on the field, feed isn't good so maybe I'm missing something.

eagleboston said...

Boy, Tech is putting everyone in the box. Tough to run into that.

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

We are bringing a lot of pressure, seems like VTech just isn't prepared for it.

Benjamin said...

VT thought we didn't bring pressure.

Benjamin said...

Man, I'll take this Boston College team any day (compared to the past six weeks)

eagleboston said...

VT will adjust. The question is will we?

Big Jack Krack said...

Come on, Brock - open it up and we can move this ball.

Keep it up, please.

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

God, Chase wants that one back. Amidon was gone.

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

Chase does not have the best long ball touch, young guy though, he'll keep working on it. Could be 14-3. If we lose by less than 7, Blauds can use that as the "1 play" that kept us from 6-1

Big Jack Krack said...

Our OLine is really sub par this year on the running game.

Larmond!

eagleboston said...

Man, we are having a very tough time running today. I don;t know if this is an O-line issue or a running back issue.

eagleboston said...

Wow, we actually ran a screen pass?

Big Jack Krack said...

Oh Boy!

I like Finch - let's go Deuce.

Big Jack Krack said...

No way - home town call

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

That cannot be an interception. Ridiculous. Also, amazing that VTech didn't see the screen play coming for that first down. Regardless, way our defense is playing, interception puts them on the 3, that's fine. Spaz looks borderline senile waving around on the sideline.

eagleboston said...

Why doesn't Brock shore up the pass protection? BC would be better off keeping an extra blocker for protection and have fewer receivers go out. You know Foster is going to blitz on every 3rd and long. Or, take advantage of the pursuit and go back to the screen pass.

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

3rd down from the VTech 35. That's two down territory, third down play call should have been made with that in mind. Instead, nothing and we punt. Fortunately Quigly pins them but that was ridiculous.

Benjamin said...

I'd rather have Spaz raving like a loon than taking a nap.

Benjamin said...

I'm okay with punting. If we don't get it, it's momentum in VT's hands going into the half. Deflates us and picks them up.

eagleboston said...

Please show more of the sideline reporter.

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

Benjamin:

Fair point, early in the game, we have the lead you're probably right on that one.

eagleboston said...

O-line, would you dipshits block somebody! Please! You are allowing Rettig to get rushed on every single play.

Benjamin said...

Eagleboston: that'll never happen.

eagleboston said...

This is eerily familiar. The opponent putting together a long drive with no time left. AHHGGGGGG!

Big Jack Krack said...

This prevent defense was an absolute disgrace. A better throwing QB would have killed us.

We gave them 3 more points but a good half by the players.

eagleboston said...

Can BC's O-line coach please study film of how Va Tech picked up the blitz time and time again in the first half?

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

Really disappointed in that end of half. Jimmy Noel pick would have been huge, but we leave a creative and disruptive defensive game plan that's been working all game to go into pretty much a prevent. It hasn't been working for 3 years, but let's keep trying. I hope the players are inspired by their first half effort (and the oline takes some inspiration from the rest of the team) and we continue to look strong in the second half. If we come out with a run on first down, my remote is going into the wall.

Benjamin said...

BJK: To be fair, Thomas is a competent QB. Among one of the better ones will face this year.

Benjamin said...

Well Rob, I'm glad to see your remote is still intact. Three passes, albeit incomplete.

eagleboston said...

And the BC meltdown continues...

eagleboston said...

Darn, and BC is just not built to play from behind. Will Super Mario Mustache make adjustments as Va Tech clearly has?

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

Ha, benjamin, its still here and intact.

At least the oline blocking looks a little better in the second half. I really like Finch over Williams in the RB spot. Williams is clearly faster, but just doesn't have a feel for hitting the hole. Its a shame. Still think that we should be pass heavy against this team if they're going to continue to put 8 guys in the box.

Also, why on earth are we running routs short of the sticks on 3rd down. Bailed out of PI, but come on.

Big Jack Krack said...

Ben - Thomas is good for sure.

I'm just mad at the prevents nothing D after such a great first half.

Why do we always have to give up points at the end of the half? Come on coaches!

Benjamin said...

The interception is killer.

eagleboston said...

Rettig is not a smart QB. All season long he has tried to force plays that just were not there. The BC offense finally gets something going and rather than throw the ball away, he tosses an INT at the worst possible time.

This is as bad as it gets folks. It was not even this horrific in the late 80's or mid 90's.

Bhill said...

How do you not make a play on that ball fletcher

Big Jack Krack said...

Wow - Fletcher looked awful on that TD.

Benjamin said...

Eagleboston:
I've got to disagree that this is as bad as it gets. The team is competing today. The interception is bad, yeah, but let's see how the offense responds to it. Overall, they've been playing well today. Rettig, especially, since he's been pushed out of the pocket on almost every play.
It ain't over til it's over. Still a chance for bowl eligibility.

Ryan said...

Eagleboston is a fucking moron, per usual. Rettig has 0.2 seconds to make a decision because theres a VT DL in his face on every play. Our OL is an utter abortion.

eagleboston said...

And the rout begins! I have never given up on a BC team, but I am seriously considering going for a bike ride since it is 70 degrees outside. I'll see what the offense does on the next drive. Zero points and I am gone.

At the risk of being provocative, at what point do we look at another QB? Rettig has not won a single game against FBS level competition this year. He's just not getting it done. Is there anyone else that can give this team a much needed spark?

Ryan said...

Anyone who blames Rettig for this offense, disregarding the awful play-calling and non-existent pass/run blocking knows nothing about football.

eagleboston said...

Ryan,I guess we have to agree to disagree. I believe he could have thrown the ball away. Great QB's do that.

Benjamin said...

Rettig is our QB. He's a sophomore. Give a him better line, and he's a completely different qb.

dixieagle said...

With the craptastic, unimaginative coaching and the truly horrible OL, I don't think any QB would be very successful.

Ryan said...

Here's what Rettig has to deal with:

1) predictable play calling that puts us in 3rd and long 75% of the time

2) no running game to speak of

3) an OL who look like they've collectively never played football before

4) receivers who, not only arent ACC-level, aren't D-1 level and create no separation

5) receivers who, even when they do find themselves open, drop passes like it's their job.

eagleboston said...

OK Ryan, since you are a football genius, what do you do to improve things? I made the suggestion to keep an extra tight end or back in to block and having fewer receivers go out on routes. What is your solution?

Ryan said...

There is no solution. There is no master plan to save this season, or this team. The team is flawed from top-to-bottom. Kuechly, Pierre-Louis, and Rettig are the only people who deserve to put on a BC jersey.

Benjamin said...

It starts with the lines. We have no protection for our QB and we have no pressure on opposing QBs. We need to fix the o-line, and get the right personnel in the d-line. Not having Ramsey hurts this year. He was a bruiser.

eagleboston said...

It appears BC is not in a financial situation where they can fire Spaz (it would be nice if he were to resign). Assuming he is back, will a condition be that Spaz must throw some assistants under the bus? And if so, is the O-line coach the first to go?

Ryan said...

Devine should go, but he won't. I honestly think we get stuck with the same shitty staff all next year too.

Ryan said...

BC has money to do whatever it truly wants to do. The fact is, GDF is trying to save face and prove that he isn't a coach-firing machine and that his best buddy really isn't a bumbling moron that he staked his reputation on for no reason other than "loyalty". That's why we won't fire Spaz.

eagleboston said...

I also think they are going to play up the injury situation. To be fair to Spaz, he has lost some very big time players, Momah, Harris, Ramsey, Jones. However, even with those guys out, we should have defeated Duke, Northwestern and Wake.

eagleboston said...

Damn, I must be an addict. I'm still here watching this.

Adidaspete said...

In other news... Dominique Davis has set an NCAA record at ECu by going 26 for 26 in the first half...

Benjamin said...

It's okay Eagleboston. We're all addicts here.

Knucklehead said...

Rettig, When he has average time he is good. Plus he is as tough as come. The line does nothing for him. They don't even pick him up off the turf when he gets clobbered.

Knucklehead said...

The play calling has been great.

eagleboston said...

26-26!! That amazing! Most QB's couldn't do that with no defenders on the field.

Rettig is definitely a tough kid. I do hope the team gets better and he can have some fun and experience some wins down the road.

Benjamin said...

Big comeback. Right here.

CatabEagle said...

I'm going to respectfully disagree with Ryan and Benjamin re: Rettig. I watch each game and ff through it a second time. Rettig is not our only problem, but he's a major one. He has two fundamental flaws; poor footwork and poor accuracy. Rettig's problem is not the O-Line. If you rewatch the game and count his time in the pocket, he has plenty of time (usually a 3-5 count). He has yet to learn to move in the pocket while keeping a high eye level (a side note, anyone that's met Rettig in person knows he's 5'11, also causing him problems in the pocket). I don't think we have a better QB, but I don't think Rettig is the long term solution either.

Coach Spaziani won 32 minutes against VT, before Jagodzinski's remnants blew it. Coach Jagodzinski won just over TWO minutes when he went into Lane Stadium, even with a slew of TOB-developed NFL talent.

Terrific coaching job by Frank Spaziani today, giving VT all they could handle until the players fell apart and the O-Line forgot how to block. If only the players could honor the 60 minutes per day Coach Spaziani puts into his game plans, with a full 60 minutes of their own. Alas...

blist said...

I for one applaud Spaz' effort to get America back on its feet by making BC games unwatchable. I installed a new window in my bathroom I otherwise would have wasted looking at a competitive second half. I am so near to having a new bathroom done - but also very far.
Well done Frank!

EagleManhattan said...

+1 for bostonfoodie not know what the hell he's talking about.

Rettig is about the same height as Spaz, whose not a small guy.

Shinskie is actually 6'3, FYI.

CatabEagle said...

Re: EagleManhattan. I've met Rettig. I've also met Spaz. Rettig is not 6'3. The key point is his accuracy and vision in the pocket remains a work in progress, as with his footwork. These are not problems with the Oline. I want him to improve, but at some point I think the team should see what else it has at QB. Sometimes players (like Peterson) can surprise you.

Good News! BC 4 NU 3 in OT. BC men's Hockey will cheer you. After a lackluster first 2 periods, BC scores 2 in the 3rd to tie and a tip in in OT to win at Northeastern.

How do I know this? I watched the game in HD quality webcast for free from Northeastern. Not disloyal; but the SportsHub had the Bruins audio and not the Eagles. The so-called "All Access" had only audio and that wasn't working at all.

If Northeastern can provide a free, broadcast quality webcast of its hockey team in a home game, why can't GDF do the same for BC.

If you send an email to or call the BCAA about the lack of a broadcast tonight on "all Access", it will be news to them. Our BCAA needs to work on its competency and that starts at the top.

Mr. Tambourine MAn said...

Was ATL to depressed to post his quick post game thoughts? Or is there nothing else left to say?

What can't Spaz ruin about this season. I was optimistic before this one, I still think we'll beat Maryland, maybe NC State, but 3-4 wins is our ceiling. Depressing.

EagleManhattan said...

Rettig isn't 6'3. He's 6'1-6'2. He's not 5'11 and he's not short enough to have vision problems.

mod34b said...

EagleManhattan,

How do you know that Rettig is not 6'3" but a mere one inch shorter at 6'2"?

Special vision?

John said...

Thinking the same thing as Rob. Is Atlanta on strike? Look forward to his post game comments.

From here in St. Louis, I am anxious to find out someone's assessment on the frosh qb, Christian Suntrup (6'3"), from St. Louis Chaminade. I actually like Rettig. He was legitimately recruited by USC.

Big Jack Krack said...

I'm curious about Christian Suntrup for next year as well. I'm sure that he will compete very hard for the job and that will make Rettig bettewr as well.

I am not against Rettig at all and wish him the best, but if Christian is better, then the job should be his to earn on the practice field next spring.
