Kuechly wins DPOY, hoops loses and other links

Luke Kuechly is bound to win many awards, but the most deserving was being named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award. He joins Mark Herzlich as the only two Eagles to win the award since joining the conference in 2005. In my opinion this means the most because it is the conference award. The voters know Luke and have seen his unbelievable production up close. Most of the other awards are heavily influenced by reputation and politicking.

BC lost their game within the ACC-Big Ten challenge for the first time, going down to Penn State 62-54. It was frustrating in that the team had the lead for long stretches only to falter down the stretch. We keep seeing glimpses from different guys, but nothing is sustained or consistent. The other issue remains the rotation. Donahue is trying a lot of different thing, but we don't have a group of five guys who can play long minutes together AND play good defense AND generate points.

Here is a good recap of our pending recruits.

What's happened to Dsnny Rubin? Last year he started many games, played significant minutes, made his share of 3 pointers, and seemed to buy into his role in Coach Donahue's system.

This year he has seen only a few seconds of playing time at the end of the blowouts.

Rubin is not in the rotation. Cahill has a steadying influence on the frosh when he plays. Why not Rubin. We could have used him as a "zone buster" last. The frosh seemed to lose all confidence in Donahue's offense and stopped playing it.

Does anybody know why Rubin has been relegated?

Improvement on defense, but that's it tonight.

Cahill seems to be a solid leader/coach material. Rubin faded down the stretch last year, and that trend hasn't changed. I'm sure he can hit an open 3 in practice, and sometimes in games... but he appears to be a little undersized/weak, and that got exposed in conference play last year.

I'd be very interested to know what happened to Daniels. He gets zero playing time. The team needs a PG leader to distribute the ball, can he not cut it?

This is the worst BC team in 30 yrs. We have 2 ACC caliber players on the entire team. This is an average ivy league team at best. They are ivy league players, recruited by other ivy's. Unless they recruit better we have zero chance. I really think we may not win one acc game this year. Will these guys be decent in 4 yrs, sure. But that is a long time from now. I am already questioning donahue's evaluation of talent letting heslip go. On another note donahue wad brought in to bring higher character players in. A lot of older alumni were embarassed by skinners players. Drug dealing, pistol whipping, jumping through windows from guys with bats, counterfeit money. This all happened at BC and its not normal. If it was another team we would be all over them and laughing. I think donahue is a great guy. Hopefully he can win here, but its a big question as of now.

recruiting looks like it will be business as usual. hopefully BC can land a few of those D-lineman recruits mentioned. we need help on both sides of the trenches.

Daniels was dribbling too much... side to side... not enough productivity. He was turning the ball over way too much. I'm sure he remains in the future plans... but Moton appears to be more steady with the ball, and a solid defender.

Donahue will get it turned around. This team would have been a whole lot different had Jackson stayed. I think it is premature to label these players Ivy level considering they are only freshmen. The truly great freshmen are not going to go to BC no matter who is the coach. Would you want to play in that glorified high school arena that is only half full most games? The great ones go to Ohio State and Kansas and Duke and UNC. We're going to get the second tier players that take time to develop but could be great in 2-3 years.

Not only am I confident Donahue will develop great players, but I think he may one day fill the arena.

By the way, fire Spaz!

Danny Rubin has not played because he's become a liability. He was effective for about 10 games last year until teams figured out he could do nothing besides hit wide open threes. When you take those looks away he offers nothing offensively, cant rebound, and is too slow/unathletic to guard perimeter players

Most of donahues recruits were recruited by ivy league schools and mid majors. Thus, they are not access caliber. Some will over achieve, others only have so much ability. We will lose games in conference this year by 30 points maybe more. I want BC to win, but we don't have the talent level. The thing about skinner wad his under the radar recruits turned into contributing nba players. That is why we son. If donahue can't find similar players we can't compete in conference. The football and basketball teams are both at a low point not seen since the 80s. That being they are both horrible at the same time. The rose colored glasses need to come off.

The hoop team played a decent first half, albeit against one of few teams who might be able to empathize with them (PS lost 80% of its scoring from last year). But, as their frustration on offense grew, they got sloppier and dopier. They simply look really, really young. Jackson had a few moments of confident offense and great hustle, but then just as quickly disappeared. Humphries clearly feels pressure to do it all himself. Cahill would make a nice graduate assistant, and Clifford needs lots of protein shakes between twice-daily sessions in the weight room. (Meanwhile, someone has got to pull Caudill away from the buffet line.)

Rubin's problem was that he had no ability to create separation by himself. He needed at least one really good screen and preferably two to get free. Hence, it's production fell off the cliff after about the fourth game last year. He did have a pure shooter's touch, however, and if Donahue succeeds in teaching the kids to set an effective screen (maybe after he teaches them one-on-one defense), Rubin could get some minutes back.

All that said, I love how Donahue uses every minute of every game as a teaching opportunity. And, his quotes in the press always balance the negatives with some positives and encouragement. Wicked long way to go, but I like his chances, especially if he can snag a couple of transfers next season.

From everything I've seen so far, there's simply not a pure shooter on the team this year. As the team gets fundamentally sounder (and they ARE), they're moving the ball around well enough to get open looks from the arc. If Rubin still CAN make those, then there's a place for him on the floor yet.
