Soccer beats Maryland in ACC Tourney

BC got up early and then held on to beat Maryland in the first-round of the ACC Tournament. On Friday they will take on Duke in the semifinals. You can watch that game online at espn3.com.

BC soccer is great. Men's soccer coach Ed Kelly and women's soccer coach Alison Foley are easily BC's two best coaches not named Jerry York.

Maryland is a great soccer program. To beat them says a lot. Undoubtedly at number 4, they will still be invited to the tournament. BC will have to beat Duke who beat a very good Clemson squad.

Soccer? What's up--no paint drying that needs watching? [grin] Sorry, couldn't resist..

Congratulations to the men's soccer team for its victory over a major program.

Lets hope the women don't draw Stanford again this year.

JBQ, as far as the NCAA tournament hopes, both soccer teams are/will be comfortably in. Mediocre ACC standings aside, the BC mens' RPI even before this big win over Maryland was #7. They'll have home field in the NCAAs. The only thing at stake in their game against Duke is a 1-seed.

It hasn't been mentioned here, but in case anyone cares, the women (RPI #16) are a 4-seed. They'll host Marist on Sunday, then hopefully will face the winner of Santa Clara vs. Cal--two really good teams, but teams REALLY far from home. I don't know whether BC's opponent will have been in Boston for a full week, or have flown back and forth across the country twice leading up to it, but either way, it's an immense advantage for BC. Unfortunately, a trip to the sweet 16 almost certainly mean--you guessed it--a matchup against Stanford. In Palo Alto. Drat. Well, clearly it's a hump they're going to have to get over eventually. Remember how sweet the 2001 hockey title was, in no small part because the whole tournament was revenge against the powers that had knocked BC out in the previous tourneys?

A follow-up: I may be wrong about the women's tournament sites. The NCAA site confuses me. Maybe our ladies host one game, then have to fly cross-country for the 2nd round to Palo Alto to face the winner of two lower-seeded teams from the Bay Area for another chance to play Stanford. Cuz that makes sense (not).

BC beat Duke 2-1 and draw first place North Carolina in the final. Since BC is the real Irish football program, Ireland beat Estonia 4-0 in the first leg away in qualifying for Euro 2012. They are on track to qualify for the Final 16 in Poland-Ukraine. Hand ball France 09 will not go away until they meet again.
