Dinich thinks BC could turn things around this year

With most of the media and fans predicting a long season that ends in Spaz's firing, ESPN's ACC blogger Heather Dinich took a different stance today.

2. Boston College: The Eagles could be one of the surprise teams in the ACC in 2012. Last year's roster was filled with underclassmen, including quarterback Chase Rettig. The running back position has enough depth even without Montel Harris, and first-year coordinator Doug Martin said the offensive line should be one of the team's most improved groups. The receivers remain a question. The defense -- and entire team -- will miss linebacker Luke Kuechly, but with 16 starters back, including seven on defense, the Eagles should be able to still show improvement.
I don't share her optimism, but I do see her point. But I think the optimists are overlooking some key aspects of last season's record. We didn't just lose because of injuries, talent and experience. We lost games because some of them were grossly mismanaged. That's not going to change this year. Spaz is still in charge of the clock and timeouts and our overall game plan. Northwestern and Duke games swung due to some head scratching decisions. We gave up way too early against Clemson and had numerous other issues in different games.

As long as Spaz is in charge, we will continue to play close games. That's the nature of his game management. And if you play enough close games some of them are going to break the wrong way.

ATL, where did your hope go? I think you are spending too much time with the Eagle Outsider Mega-downers. Not much hope comes out of that dark, cynical place. Bring back the old ATL who was not afraid to be wrong, to be second guessed.

Also you say, "I don't share her optimism, but I do see her point. We lost games because some of them were grossly mismanaged. That's not going to change this year. Spaz is still in charge of the clock and timeouts and our overall game plan."

Says who? Is Doug Martin just a potted plant? No, He was brought to fix one of the worst offenses in FBS. I think GDF (let's be clear as to who is calling the shots) is going to allow Martin to have some more authority than Brock had (an interim guy).

And your point on NW and Duke is right. Fixing dumb managment issues - not player issues - turns those games into wins.

Will we win the division? I highly doubt it. Will BC finish over .500? yes, I think so.

Ever to Excel!

The maturation of chase rettig and the O-line as a whole will help out a lot. Yes, spaz's game management is awful, but seeing that we won 3 of our last 4 games, i think it's reasonable for us to be hopeful. I re-watched the clemson game and rettig was awful, he must've overthrown his receivers 5 times and the O-line didnt give him any time. This team got a lot better over the year, and I don't think a couple of misused timeouts and poor play-calling will offset this teams improvement.

A lot of freshmen and sophomores have been thrown into action the past couple of years. That real game experience should pay off this season. Also, this should allow most of this year's freshmen to be redshirted. I'm guessing we will win at least 5 and possibly even 7 games this season. We have better offensive coaches and that has been our problem since Matty Ice left. Defense should be fine, even without Luke. If we can score consistently in the mid-20's, this team could pull off a couple upsets. Granted, Spazoo's stupidity may cost us a couple games and throw my predictions in the dust.

I think we need to keep expectations high so Spaz doesn't get another pass for a .500 season or worse.

I agree with HD!

The loss of Keuchly and Donnie Fletcher will hurt the defense.

The d-line is very thin.

CJ Jones and Louis Jean need to step up on the corners.

This is the most average defense that we have had in 10 years.

The QB has another year of development. He has taken a beating over the last 2 years. He is still a question mark.

The o-line looked big and nasty at the spring game. They should be better which will help Rettig.

We will have running back by committee. They are good.

The WR's and TE's will be good if used properly.

The offense will be better than it has been over the last two years.

If we beat Miami in game#1 then we will get 6 wins. If we do not split the first four games then Spaz's leadership HAS to be reevaluated because then it will be three years in a row with a poor start.

I think McGovern revamps the defense and we get six wins.

Not much time this morning - but I think we will be competitive this year and I hope that we are not bitten by the injury bug.

That's one of the keys.

Clemson could have a surprise waiting for them with a 3 - 0 Eagles Squad.

Hey - everyone who is on the fence needs to check out the Father's Day Ticket sale.

You can't ask for a better deal.

Go BC - let's fill up our stadium.

Would it be justified to cheer for Maine so that Spaz gets canned quicker?
