BC blows by the Black Bears

We are 1-1 and I still don't know how good we actually are. The stats in our win over Maine don't tell the whole story. We were sluggish and missed opportunities early. Our defense seemed slow and didn't do enough in the first half. The second half was a different story and saw us make big plays on defense, offense and special teams. Rettig's stats were not impressive, but I thought he played well too .

But a win is still a win...and when you trail a FCS team after one quarter, you just have to appreciate the W.

I will have second viewing thoughts and grades up late Sunday night.

And now we know officially, Miami is plain awful ...

About Miami. Turns out that our offense against MIA had more total yards than K-State could manage. A
gainst Miami

Two big difference: our defense stinks and too many turn overs.

So. I prefer to compare our offense to K-State offense.

Hey. It is one measure of progress.

Our group of RB's could honestly have the worst collective set of hands I have EVER seen at a high-major program

Boston.com has had the wrong final score on their website for hours now.

I was at the game - what happened to Sinkovec regarding a foot injury?

Many of the formations and plays that were effective against Miami were not used today.

I thought the OLine looked like last year today. Also, the play calling regressed quite a bit because many of the plays were telegraphed. Maybe Martin wanted to go plain vanilla before the NW game.

Rettig looked good at times, but totally missed seeing wide open receivers several other times - including tight ends.

Maine's defense looked to be on a par with Miami's. They played hard , never gave up and can be proud of themselves.

No energy in the stands by the fans - ZERO. Maybe the students were ok at times, otherwise dead.

Pantale would have hauled in several of those end zone incompletions. Amidon, Coleman and Evans et al would be more effective if Pantale, Larmond Jr and Swigert were playing. As an example, I think if Amidon were not the go-to receiver, we'd see him breaking some long ones.

Some Freshmen saw action - I don't know if Spaz is burning their redshirts or what.

Dan Crimmins, Harrison Jackson, Steven Daniels and some other defenders - I think Tim Joy, Bryce Jones.

I don't remember seeing Malachi Moore.

Let's go BC - come out smoking against NW next week. We will need to score 40 points for sure.

The good news is that we won 34 to 3 with an unenthusiastic crowd - although the 35-36K in attendance was more than I expected. How many of that number was actually in the stands? I don't really know, but I'd guess 33.

BJK I think Martin knew he did not need to use the whole play book agaibpnst Maine - and expose it to competitors.

Martin must e saving up some plays for Northwestern!

Offense was not very sharp today . Rettig, to me, seemed a bit off.

It looked like Rettig had regressed to having trouble with his progressions. He also locked in more on receivers. He won't be able to do that against better competition.

I noticed Rettig missed 4-5 open receivers on the back side of the play.

He threw into double coverage 3-4 times.

Martin needs to put in a check-down receiver or back. It would give Rettig an option other than throwing into double coverage and would have been VERY effective yesterday.

I said this last week but the footwear is causing the injuries.

A couple of times their shoes fell of completely.

One of the marketing points of the field turf was that it reduced injuries. Taking them at their word, as Spike Lee used to say its gotta be the shoes.

Im no Spaz fan, but it was great to see him gather up the three RB's after the Finch fumble, which followed the Kimble fumble, which followed the game 1 fumbles, and just tear into his three RBs. This is really absurd that not one of these guys can hang onto the ball.

Hats off to true freshman Justin Simmons who had a great game. Forced a fumble and had 3 tackles.

I thought Rettig looked okay but I also think he did miss a few obvious passes because of tunnel vision. Defense played solidly. It will be really interesting to see how both offense and defense play against a truly good team in northwestern... I'm thinking it will be a shootout. Does Anyone have any word on swigert, larmond, or pantale? When they are back who knows what bc can do

Rettig has a bad back after injuring it in the Miami game. As someone who has had back pain in the past, I think that explains Rettig's lackluster performance yesterday. Even getting out on the field is amazing when your back is hurting. Hopefully, he can tough out the NW game and then get better during the bye week.

It does seem that the shoes may well be the culprit with regard to the foot injuries. Once, I thought a ball had been fumbled, but realized it was a shoe that had fallen off completely. Have to do something about this.
