What the "Athletic Department background" aspect of the search tells us

We don't know who the new AD will be, but as I wrote yesterday, Leahy and Sullivan have made it pretty clear that it will be someone with experience in a college Athletic Department. Initially I hoped that BC would be more adventurous in their thinking, but understand why their path is taking them in this direction.

With Notre Dame coming into the ACC, the conference situation is secure. Notre Dame will also open up the media contract, but the ACC doesn't need a BC AD to negotiate or lead those deals. What we need now is a very good leader who can fix many of the problems facing BC athletics.

Many sports need new facilities, more attention from their high ranking AD officials and financial support. Leahy and Sullivan recognize this. By focusing on someone who has direct experience in a Athletic Department, they are shortening the adjustment period and learning curve. The new leader will still have to learn about BC, but not about how to run an Athletic Department nor navigate the NCAA's minefields. The new AD will be expected to make immediate impact, first in football and then throughout the department.

BC will also need a major athletic capital campaign, but that won't be approached in the first phase of the new AD's tenure. Leahy and Sullivan have made it clear there is immediate more work to be done repairing BC athletics.

uggghhh.. as now described, the AD job sounds so boring and unexciting ....facilities upgrades?? zzzzzzzzzz...

How about being the public face of an awesome university that is climbing to higher heights????

C'mon Leo and Leahy.... get some zip back in the BC sails

BC has had three ADs in the past 50 years. Flynn, Gladchuk and Gdf. The two BC grads were very successful. The non BC grad was a total failure. Gdf was the worst AD in BC history and probably the worst in the country. He led the country in cupidity, stupidity and duplicity. Based on that History wouldn't one lean in the direction of a BC person? Please don't select an AD with a similar background to the inept Gdf.( An opportunist and climber from several atletic departments).

I hope that "athletic department background" is code for "knows how to hire a good coach." This was GDF's weak spot. See Frank Spaziani, Sylvia Crawley, Jeff Jagozinski, Tom Mutch.

Actually, can anyone name a good coach that GDF hired?

Jags was great hire and a terrible fire.

Jags was the worst hire and was fired on principle, hahaha.

1) So forget the facilities? Can we have good facilities, good coaches and a good leader?

2) A statistical universe of three is hardly worthy of using to make sweeping predictions.

3) a bad AD hire is the responsibility of a poor selection team not using good judgement in evaluating the candidates vs the job requirements. The Alma mater should not be a job requirement. Ability to do the job is the ONLY requirement.

4) What has Jags done since that was successful?

Since when does action at one job determine performance at your previous one?

Any candidate chosen will still be hamstrung by the relatively low budget Fr. Leahy gives the AD. Want a better HC? Pay more money. Want better recruiters? Pay more money. Want better facilities? Pay more money. We can rightfully complain about GDF, but Fr Leahy is still in charge.

Just thought about this while watching the FSU game... When spaz gets canned we should try and get FSU defensive coordinator mike stoops... He combined with a good offense coordinator like Doug Martin could make a great tandem
