Stephanie McCaffrey brouhaha and other links

BC suspended women's soccer star Stephanie McCaffrey for he twitter jokes regarding Jerry Sandusky and Penn State. She will miss BC's NCAA tournament game against the Nittany Lions. I feel like this is a slight overreaction by BC. Clearly what McCaffrey did was stupid and in poor taste, but would she have been suspended if we were playing some program other than Penn State? Let's say BC was playing PSU in football and she made a Sandusky joke on twitter to her brother (Football's James McCaffery) and her team was playing Stanford in the NCAAs. Would she still be suspended? I hope BC wins the game so that McCaffrey's dumb jokes don't cost her teammates. Lesson to all college athletes: think before you tweet!

The men's soccer team is out of the NCAA Tournament after losing to Northeastern.

Erik Johnson got his first win as BC's women's basketball coach. He also added three new recruits.

I know some of you are aware of BC's relationship with JB Harvey, but this article shows how much the team has done for JB and his family.

Huge Overreaction.... It's too bad that Bates took the Hard line on a good kid and brought all this negative press. Stupid comments blown way out of proportion. The team will now be without one of their best players. Hope they can still advance in the tournament.

Wow...basketball team is even on turnovers, even on O-rebs, shot 7 more free throws, shot 39% from three and 49% overall...and is going to lose by 16. Ouch.

We have a football program in shambles. Coaches leave the sidelines for "medical" reasons never to be seen again. Football players are shown the door, are suspended for unexplained "team rules violations" or transfer out without a word. And, our new AD decides to make his first big public position hanging a sophomore soccer student in the court of public opinion. I hope the AD is proud of himself. Was what this student did wrong? You decide. Was what the AD did to mark this young adult publicly, bring negative attention to Boston College when it doesn't seem anyone was looking for it and show that our Christian values of forgiveness are applied differently in this circumstance wrong? I say yes. This student learned a valuable lesson, for sure. But, I think what the AD did to her in this very public condemnation is reprehensible.

Overreaction by an AD not qualified for the position. 8 weeks since he started and still no word on his vision for BC athletics. At most schools, he would be fired.

He also has a bigger issue beyond spaz. Our men's basketball coach has proven to be a disaster. Probably a worse hire than spaz. Time for him to go too.

Too bad was not as critical of repeated stupidity in both actions and words by their former AD.

So its Bates the tough guy Players have a raw deal, as they are treated as tools of entitled management.

How is this an overreaction? If you run a business, you can't afford to have your very visible employees voluntarily put their feet in their mouths. Perhaps Stephanie McCaffrey and others will realize you can't get away with saying irresponsible things because you were "just kidding." It doesn't matter that you were taking shots at someone who has clearly done evil things.

The last thing a Catholic school needs to do is to take potshots at child abusers.
