Doeren to NC State and BC's opportunity to be selective

Dave Doeren signed with NC State. BC never even called him to schedule a formal interview. I really liked Doeren as a candidate, but I am not concerned about losing him to another ACC school. I am not even surprised as I've heard rumblings about Doeren for a week or two. As I wrote:
3. Dave Doeren, Northern Illinois. I think Doeren would be ideal. He has an intensity and work ethic that we've been lacking since Coughlin. I think he could come to BC, do big things and restore our talent base quickly. His record at Northern Illinois has been very impressive. But I don't think he'll end up at at the Heights. His name is being mentioned for multiple jobs and I don't see BC chasing after the "hot" name. I've been wrong before, but if Doeren ends up at Purdue, I think it will be a missed opportunity for both sides.

Then in the comments section of that same post I wrote:
Doeren is my ideal. I ranked him third because I don't think he is BC's top choice (for a variety of reasons) and I don't think we are his top choice (for a variety of reasons). I think it is a shame, but I don't think it comes together. When both sides start off with doubts, I don't think the relationship comes together...especially when both have options.
Doeren is an aggressive guy and made it clear publicly he was leaving Northern Illinois. I don't think BC liked that approach. I don't think Bates needs a candidate who is willing to sign a lifetime contract in blood, but I do think they want someone who is excited to be at BC and who is going to carry himself in a certain way. Bates is starting his process with his top targets. Doeren may have been called eventually, but when NC State made an offer, he was the type that was going to take it. But BC is operating from a position of strength. There are plenty of good candidates out there. Bates will find the right guy for BC.

Even though I really liked Doeren I am not worried about him being in our division. I think NC State has some issues that will prevent him from being anything more than TOB or Amato were there. I also don't think working for Debbie Yow is going to be a picnic.

I agree that Doreen was not a good "fit" for BC as he seemed to be a self-promoteror, as you termed it, "aggressive".

I’m seeing multiple reports that look a lot like trial balloons for the UNH coach, Sean McDonnell. Somebody is pushing the name forward. Is it McDonnell and friends? or is it BC releasing the name to see how it floats.

Bill....don't hold anything back, please. Let us know what's going on.

I think the McDonnell stuff is coming from media speculation. He's not getting the job.

Agreed that Doeren seems to be a total (artless) operator. He seemed to get his name associated with many schools causing NCSC to bid up his salary. Maybe not the best way to start a long term relationship with a university. I guess if you are using NCSU to get ahead, who cares. Same for Yow: once he is under contract with NCSU, Yow is irrelevant.

Also, Doeren is only 40, a young 40 - seems he still has some maturing to do. Is it me, or does being a football coach tend to delay the normal maturation process (e.g. Jags, Kiffin, Dabo)?

ATL -why is Butch Jones not high on the BC list? Seems like Brian Kelly Jr, a good thing

Jones has fans. I don't know if he wants BC or a bigger job. If he plays his cards right he might get an SEC job.

Bates is interviewing people. I wonder who.

I hope Bates can schedule meetings with Diaco, Hazell, and Roman. Each guy has his own strengths, and each could be successful given the right circumstances.

Appreciate Bates taking his time but the wait is making me jittery!

What did Doeren say publicly that was so bad that it would make BC decide not to consider him? The only comments I saw were fairly innocent (I.e. I would have to do what's best for my family) but maybe I didn't see the comments you're referring to.. Can you shed some light?

blist said...

It must be because he was very clear he was going to bolt NIU. But then if that rules him out, why doesn't it rule out Golden?

After he jags/spaz fiasco I really hope our school isn't operating under the impression that loyalty matters in this business. I sure hope Bates isnt as naive as GDF was. Besides, whats so wrong about not being completely dishonest about your intentions?

Good luck to Doeren, great point by ATL Eagle about Debbie Yow, ask Gary Williams how it is working with her. I have been reading alot about Wilder from ODU, what do we think about him? Pretty impressive what he has accomplished there, he has BC ties and is a New England native. Virginia is a very fertile recruiting area as well.

Butch Jones is only leveraging BC to get a better offer. Right now, Cincy is only a half step down from BC and I think he thinks he can do better. He probably can. Bates needs to be more aggressive in his search. NCST beats us to the punch and no one on thie board is upset?

Did anyone else hear the interview that Bill O'Brian did with SVP & Russillo? If i was a Penn St fan i'd be pretty worried. All he kept saying was 'I plan on being at Penn State next year' over and over again. not 'I'm committed to Penn St' or 'we have unfinished business' or 'i will be here next year' just 'i plan on being here next year' - that's a big difference. Basically he was saying 'if someone could pay this buyout then i'm outta here.' not saying he's coming to BC but he definitely left the door open.

Is NC ST. copying Maryland's move from two years ago? The Terps let Friedgen go after winning nine games in 09. They've won an average of three the last two years. Under TOB NC ST. has averaged eight wins the last three years. It has gone to four bowl games in the last five years. Good luck to Doeren but he may look like Edsall two years from now.2. Three high school players on tv yesterday were impressive. Felix from Everett, Flutie from Natick and Flaherty of Beverly. Hope BC has them on their radar.

Plenty of good candidates out there? I don't think so.

We're upping the pay to a whopping $2M. Great, we're now going to offer an average salary for big time college football. Wow, what progress.

Greg Bedard from the Boston Globe is floating Aaron Kromers name.

Bedard is an ace reporter, legit. He covers the Patriots as a beat writer and columnist.

NC State sucks.

The fact that they hired Doorstop or what ever his name is makes me believe that he sucks.

That program is dirty by the way. The new basketball coach will have them in the top 10 this year if not next, he is a total scumbag. Doorstop is probably along the same lines.

I do not want to sell my soul. I just want some hope that we can build our program back to what it was three years ago.

Spaz sucks.

Knucklehead said...

If the Flutie kid is not signed as soon as humanly possible, no matter his size, speed or arm strength then Boston College is in some serious trouble.

Knucklehead said...

. . Jags sucks even harder. Total fraud.

The average pay is 1.64. 2 mill would be 22% higher than average. Imagine what we would be talking about right now if gene paid TOB the 1.4 he wanted 6 years ago?

Where did you hear about the 100% increase in pay?

The other big selling point is the free education for the coaches kids and family. If you have 2-3 kids or a wife who can get a free BC degree/masters degree that means alot.

Plus the quality of life here, for someone making 2 million, is 10X better than anywhere else in the ACC. Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Durham, CHarlottesville, Blacksburg, Miami? I will take Boston - History, education, hospitals, media if the team is good and no pressure from them either.

EL MIZ said...

i believe Blauds said that BC could go to $2 mil for the right candidate.

i think its going to come down to Diaco and Greg Roman, with Diaco being the top target and Roman as the fall back.

Roman had been in the running at Penn State, Pitt, and was offered the Tulane job a few years ago. 4 years with Harbaugh (2 at Stanford, 2 with the 49ers) plus almost a decade in the NFL prior to that should be a good enough coaching pedigree; would be interested to see the staff he puts together.

i still think Diaco should be the #1 guy -- best recruiter at ND and one of the best in the country, coordinator of one of the best defenses in the country; only question is will he get better offers and does he want to start out at BC. i've been saying for the last 2 years we are better suited to play 3-4 D with the talent at LB and zero talent on the D-Line, i'd imagine Diaco would go to that next year. (KPL, Duggan, Daniels, Devitto, with Ramsay possibly as the NT?)

can't wait to get some semblance of real news on the search. who is bates talking to???

The $ for the assistants is key. $2M will allow someone to live well anywhere. What assistant coaches make won't take them nearly as far in the Boston area as in other places.

Boston isn't the be all and end all. Lots of folks like the college town feel. The cost of living around here is tough. Plus, if someone is coming from a warmer weather area, the winters aren't such a great deal.

The free education doesn't mean jack if you don't have kids that are at least in HS. If you're a HC, then you don't give a sh*t about a free BC education. I mean, you're making $2M a year. The free education would mean something to an assistant - if they have kids that are going to approach college age in the next 3-5 years.

knucklehead said...

Assistant coaches salaries don't mean anything if the head coach is a jack-off like you ccw.

Aaron Kromer, NO Saints OL coach being interviewed for position. Was head coach in Miami-Ohio from 90-98'

EL MIZ said...

CCW, TOB sent 3 kids to BC. i have no idea how those arrangements work but the sticker value full price of 3 kids is 600k. even for a guy making $2m a year, thats a big chunk of change.

does Diaco have any kids???

Bravesbill said...

Knucklehead, I'd live in Charlottesville any day over Boston. Beautiful area. Plus, I'd live in a lot of the other southern ACC cities like Atlanta because the cost of living is so much less. $2 million living in Atlanta goes way further than living in Boston.

CatabEagle said...

El Miz,

I agree. 600k is not a bad deal for a coach, particularly if BC sets it up in a way that makes it tax-free. If so, that's more like a 900k bonus! Not too shabby if you ask me.

Knucklehead said...

Coughlins kid/s went to BC also. One daughter for certain.

I guarnatee Spaz's kid will go there as well. He will negotiate it into the buyout.
