Let's play a "road" game against UMass in 2013

BC needs a 12th game for next season. At this point it looks like we are going to "buy" a game with a low level FBS or even FCS team. While this would likely pad our 2013 win total, it won't do much for the bottom line nor give fan interest a boost. BCI has often suggested moving up the UMass series to fill the void. Given UMass's huge attendance issues at Gillette, I have a new suggestion: we should play the Minutemen in Foxborough!

BC benefits from a game in Foxborough on a few different fronts. The biggest reason to play the game is that it allows BC to test the off-campus game without much risk. We don't sacrifice one of our true home games yet all of our fans could attend the game. We could finally see how much demand there is for a true tailgating experience. BC would also pad our win total without having to pay for the cupcake to come to Alumni. Even with the low travel cost, a game against UMass in Foxoborough wouldn't be as profitable as a home game, but depending on who we pay to play, it could be fairly close. Although I doubt we will be a factor in the BCS rankings, playing a game on the road gives a better strength of schedule rating than playing a cupcake at home.

I don't know where Bates and Addazio are with regards to our open slot. I don't expect anything risky. The nice thing about a potential UMass road game is that it is a financial and marketing risk, not a football one.

BYU might be a good fit. I remember we played them in the TOB era (mid-2000's?).

As far as building renovations in the earlier thread, now is a good time to build. Interest rates are low and subs are hungry for business (We just built a 10.5 million building and our banker told us it was the best time to build in decades). However, the priority should be a new rec plex for the students. The Plex was a complete piece of crap in the 80's. I cannot even imagine what it is like now. The second priority should be an indoor practice facility. Alumni and Conte are fine. Everyone from other states that I have brought with me to games over the years are impressed. No point in wasting money on those buildings until the fans fill them. If there is money left, then you build a baseball/softball complex.

"BC could pad win total" Way to dream high Atl.

Maybe BC could schedule UMass and Maine and UNH? WE could triple our padded win totals? Thoughts.

What a joke this program has become. An absolute joke. your article a few months ago about scheduling "up" was much more adventurous.

It is my understanding that MIZZOU has an open date. Being from Missouri, I would like to see a game with Pinkel's bois.

ESPN reporting that Al Golden to Wisky is imminent. how hard to we go after him? Or was DAzoo the primary target because he can "win right away"....whatever that means.

Ever to....oh forget it.

Golden to Wisconsin is the icing on the Daz Cake.

What is this stuff? Who here knows anything about the entire process from the inside? Who was present at all the interviews and heard all the telephone conversations? Why the negative Ned convictions that the people involved were all ignorant and stupid? You have no idea about any contact between BC and Golden. Maybe there was, maybe there wasn't. Maybe Miami nixed it. All kinds of maybees, but zero I knows for certain.

Ok, the icing just fell off the cake. Golden said no to Wisconsin

is the site formatting all weird today?

Golden not taking the Wisconsin job may be icing on the cake for the Addazio hire. looks like he's staying put, and even though Diaco is interviewing at Temple, i have a feeling he stays there too. Diaco, Lembo, Golden -- nobody went anywhere. Maybe Addazio was actually the best guy, and it isn't a Leahy-fueled conspiracy to get an Italian coach to sink our football program (as some basically allege).

The basic problem is that there has been no adequate or reasonable explanation of the process by which Daz was hired.

We don't know what happened--other then that a name that was barley mentioned is the final choice-after a meeting with BC's invited VIP panel specifically recommended that Daz not be the choice.

Tell us Daz was the choice because BC couldn't afford to spend more; but they end up paying him what? 1.75million per for 6 years--6 years!!

I'm also puzzled by posters who were barely on any board previously are suddenly here to defend the hire--now apparently for every post contrary to the party line that Daz is the second coming.

As for Al Golden, he can change his mind. Perhaps that what he did in the space of an hour this afternoon. I might not want to work forBarry A. either.

You're correct. We'll never know if he was offered by BC-or even contacted. That's what was so frustrating about the processes. It now appears that Daz was a done deal from the beginning....

I will not get over this. I was twitted today at a luncheon meeting by a colleague from Rutgers (for God's sake) for hiring the Temple coach. Somewhere Rutgers Al is laughing at us all.

Lenny, why do they have to inform you of the process? It is a private school and they don't have a public obligation to explain their hiring process to anyone. Have you ever done any hiring? Often, you cannot release details of the process as it might expose candidates that don't want their current employers knowing they are looking. My guess is BC had a competent hiring process and hired the best fit for BC. At any rate, they don't owe posters on a blog details about the hiring process.

Anyway, Daz is the coach. Deal with it (or at least give him a few games to see what he can do). I don't know if it is a good hire or a bad hire but I am amazed at the fans who are dead certain this is bad when he has not even coached a single game for BC.

i'm in the same boat as EagleBoston. i think Addazio has some good qualities (enthusiasm, good recruiter esp. in the northeast, has been a HC, was an original member of a coaching staff which won 2 natl championships) and some bad qualities (brings back former BC coaches w/ questionable former success, may not be a good HC given his 2 years at temple were so so, fans at temple and florida both didn't like him).

i have no idea what the process was but I assume that BC was thorough and vetted a handful of people -- just like with the Bates hiring, there were numerous names floated and the final hire came out of Left Field. i don't think that necessarily implies that BC didn't have any process at all or that Addazio is going to be a bad fit. like everyone else, i honestly have no idea but will be rooting for Addazio and BC.

it confuses me while people are so vehemently opposed to the hire just b/c his name was floated on the web (Blauds blog, here at ATL, elsewhere). Golden is still at Miami, and Diaco is still at ND. each of those guys had their own ? marks as well, as did a guy like Lembo or Doeren. lets face facts -- anyone rumored for the BC job is going to have ? marks, thats why their up for discussion at BC and not in the NFL or at Alabama or something.

i do think its a little silly to assume, as some people have legitimately implied on this board and elsewhere, that Addazio is somehow "Leahy's guy" or that Bates knew from the get-go that he'd hire Addazio and didn't consider anyone else or that this was somehow an "inside job" perpetuated by the Board of Trustees and has been in place for months or even years. i just think the idea that a random guy with basically no BC ties was somehow placed here years ago for no reason and that BC then hired him over Golden (who for all intents and purposes isn't available) or Diaco (who i was hoping for but still remains at ND and may not be HC material) for reasons unknown is illogical.

who knows what the process was, but based on the fact that BC sank millions of dollars into Addazio, i think it is fair to assume there was a process and this was the consensus "best guy for the job." i have no idea and will be rooting for Addazio to succeed, just as i would have any other coach who was hired.

I hate playing UMass. Their fans are horrible. ATL, if you lived up in Boston and had to deal with these fans, you would not be in favor of it.

I confess to having done more hiring in the public sector, as part of a set process, with more exact guidance as to what information can and can't be released. When I have hired in the private sector, for myself, I have attempted to comply with the law at the time.

You are correct. BC does not have to explain anything to us about their process or rationale . The other side of that coin is that I don't have to continue in the Shaw Society or contribute in any way, not because I am a frustrated blogger; but because I expect better from alma mater.

I love alma mater as much as any Double Eagle can; but that affection is with "warts & all".

As a private university, BC does not have to disclose its hiring process for the highest paid, most public faculty member; but it would have been an astute move to do so. Imagine if an open and above board advisory committee had been invited to meet with the AD and other administrators about the qualifications BC should look for. What if representatives of the university community had been asked to sit in on (confidential) interviews?

If there had been a more accessible process, more BC people might have been willing to buy ino the process.

All of these Daz defenses are the same recycled talking points that were used to defense the Spaz hire. Give him a chance, he hasn't even coached a game, he's our coach now so deal with it, blah, blah, blah. The fact that the hiring process was not explained to fans is not the problem. The problem is that nobody in the BC administration gave any BC fans reassurance that it would recruit and hire the best available coach. The hiring of Daz reinforces this failure.

Bravesbill - what happened to the recently emerged kinder/gentler/mellower Bravesbill?

Bravesbill said...

Trust me, those comments don't truly express how truly disgusted I am with BC's football program. And I'm sick of hearing people (like Joseph) spout the same nonsense they did when Spaz was hired. God forbid you disagree with the Daz hire. You will be treated like a heretic by these posters and your valid criticisms will be shouted down by recycled talking points.

Joseph said...

What a great way to start the day. More stuff from folks who probably watch SC too much and listen to too many talk shows. Do you really believe that because a name is floated that it is an "official" candidate? Some guy with a keyboard expresses an opinion and it becomes a pronouncement that we should take as handed down from the throne.

By the way, I was never a Spaz apologist. My connections to things BC are too tight to go for that.

Those that hate the idea of SA being the coach seem to think that others, like me, who are willing to accept that he just might do a good job, are therefore silly dupes of a devious administration that is totally incompetent.

If I were looking at a job in the private sector I would never want to be involved with an organization that felt obliged to offer up any info on my application, interviews or hiring. Please note that that is part of being "private". BC owes us nothing in terms of disclosing the details of the process. Of course, conspiracy buffs love it because it proves that there has been something to hide. Move on. It won't change. You will NOT be consulted on the next hire either. Deal with it.

Anyone have any thoughts on why Diaco didn't even land the Temple job ( was interviewed and offer has been made to matt rhule? Is Diaco just completely insane in interviews? I would have thought that would be a no brainer for Temple considering how enthusiastic we were at his prospects of coaching at BC??

Joseph said...

But , of course "we" didn't interview him, did we. maybe the AD did. maybe not.
