Steve Addazio to BC

It is now official. Boston College named Steve Addazio its new head coach. The name should be somewhat familiar since it was floated when we hired Spaz. Since that time he got his shot at being a Head Coach at Temple. He is 13-11 in Philadelphia. As I posted previously, my gut reaction is that Addizio will be a fine coach. I don't think he has huge upside, but he will do enough things well to help BC reach a consistent level of success.

Pros: Hardworking and respected recruiter. Florida was often able to poach the best players from New England and New Jersey. That was often because of Addazio. He has worked at schools that require athletes to attend class and graduate (Syracuse and Notre Dame). He already has a staff that is very familiar with BC's roster (Ryan Day and Kevin Rogers). This might mean that Chase Rettig gets one of his old offenses back. He's an Oline coach and will hopefully emphasize our OL tradition. If any coach is going to win, he will need to build great lines.

Cons: He's 13-11 with Al Golden's players and trending the wrong way. Florida fans thought he was a terrible offensive line coach and terrible offensive coordinator. He's got Day and Rogers on staff and took Montel Harris on as a transfer. I would have preferred someone with less association to all the drama that went down with Spaz.

Bottom Line: This was an opportunity to do something special. We went safe. Bates ignored or brushed off some candidates with great upsides or close ties to BC. You can rationalize that if you have a home run hire. Steve Addazio is not a home run hire.

I think we are on our road back. Addazio is well-respected and a hard worker. I wish him the best and will root like hell for him to succeed. Ever to excel!

[More to come tonight.]

Too old and hardly any different than Spaziano. Bad choice, guaranteed. With all the good talent out there to come up with him is pretty sad. There's something wrong with this. It'll come out at some time but the guy is just an average Joe.

The Laughing Jackal said...

Brutal. Perhaps this is the confirmation that contrary to what Bates and the powers that be say publicly, BC really would be happier in the patriot league. Awful hire. Spaziani 2.0.

Hope we're not paying him too much. I hope a 4-7 campaign at Temple didn't command over $1MM!!

Very Disappointed.... Not sure how everyone was so far off... this guy was on No One's Radar... I don't know what his salary looks like but I think it came down to Lahey not willing to pay for a TOP TIER coach..

Florida fans thought he was a terrible OC? weren't those offenses pretty damn good?

How did Urban Meyer fare w/o this guy? Pretty well. See Ohio St. this year. At best he's done an average job at Temple. He's taken that program in the wrong direction this year. Bates most important task was hiring a quality football coach. It looks like a swing and a miss. Time will tell, although not encouraged.

Yeah screw bc. they treat alumni like crap and can't even make a decent hire. it was time to roll the dice. I care less and less about bc every year, this just will continue that. I give money to my grad school which treats me better, has a clue and is better than bc academically anyways. Have you ever been to a bc alumni function? A joke, super cheap when compared to similar or better universities. half of this staff too is connected to spaz and gdf. it is mind blowing.

Goberry said...

FWRR, Florida's good offenses were when he was an offensive line coach (in a spread that didn't rely on an good O-Line). When he took over as OC, the offense suffered immensely (think Brantley).

In response to "Unknown", this guy is an unknown. I don't think that there is enough on the table yet to judge the hire. The fact that he will bring Ryan Day and Kevin Rogers with him is nothing short of bizarre. Temple does not make my heart skip a beat. He has an Irish wife (Kathy Donoghue). That is a plus. He has three children. The older two are girls and the youngest son is a tight end at Syracuse (soph). We shall see. Ever to Excel.

Hario said...

Obviously, I want to be optimistic... but I dont know how to be happy with this hire at all...

Unknown said...

Not sure why everyone is holding back. This is a f'ing horrible hire, and BC will not be getting any money from me. 4-7 at Temple? Sounds exactly like the type of guy we should hire! Looks like a bald version of Spaz too. Guess I wish him the best. Let me know when we start winning, if ever. Steve Addazio? Not Diaco? WTF!

I would have taken the Ball St dude over this once "hot" commodity. Terrible.

You would think there would have been a trial reaction floated. I mean this hire is getting crushed on every social media and blog that focuses on BC. Pathetic

Leahy being cheap again. He gets to retain a lot of the current staff and we'll still be paying the lowest salary in the ACC, if not all of BCS fooball.

You get what you pay for.

Well the good news is, we can once again revisit this same topic in three years!

I wait for the word from Ned of Savin Hill. He usually has the best insight into these things. I can't look at the guy without thinking of Spaziani - four more losing years or at best a 6 -6 with a bowl in Kalamozoo. Why did BC go with an old guy with a lousy record? I really can believe it. It seems to me that this is Father Leahy's way of saying football isn't important.

TheFive said...

Absolutely classic BC. Absolutely classic.

Not sure why any of us expected any different. Float that we're "going after the big names." Float that we're willing to spend $2M on the right guy.

Hire the uninspiring retread who is willing to take the job for the lowest pay in the ACC.

bc1900 said...

Why does it matter if his wife his Irish. screw his wife, this guy is a bum. we are getting the same staff back basically. bc will Stink for the foreseeable future. all the better academic schools have better football teams, stadiums, facilities, administration support. why would you go to bc, its a no brainer. NCAA and college sports are corrupt and a disgrace, but a few schools try including us. compared to the other academic schools though we just go through the motions. honestly if you are not going to try. I would rather be in the patriot league. our talent level and coaching in basketball and football is already there. this hire was needed to make the alumni fired up again, it has done the exact opposite. that guy who posts on here, Blauds blog, and bci is right. things are different at bc with Leahy and they doubt look bright in the future. I used to love bc do much, now I just don't care at all and it isn't just sports. I am done personally.

I do not think I could have conjured up a more disappointing hire than this old, lackluster mediocre Steve Addazio. Seems like we took Spaz jr.

Brad Bates is pretty unimpressive with this hire too.

Here is a good joke: Addazio was #17 on the coaching hot seat after this season and we hired him.

He stunk as an OC at Florida. His favorite play on 1st: run up the middle. Another coach from the football stone ages. Sparkless.

Very disappointing stuff. Let's state the obvious: Leahy is not committed to excellence in BC football. There is no other way to spin it. Very disappointing.

I think Leahy has issues with young people in authority to. Look at Brad Bates.. mid 50s.. rejected candiates in 40s. Same deal with the coaches.. Jags, Spaz, Addazio. rejected intense guys in 40s.

Welcome aboard Steve! You get to deal with a whole host of great personalities from the BC fan base.

Seeing as how you have yet to lose a game at BC, you have my support.

To AD Bates, I'm not vilifying you for this one. Not yet. You seemed to have done a thorough search, and I believe you truly want the best for our school.

I like the hire. It's not sexy, but people are overreacting.

blist said...

I'm disappointed, too, but I guess we can't have BC paying for Golden's buyout or else we'll end up worth crappy finances like Maryland and have to go to the Big Ten.
I'm going to look on the bright side here -- we would have loved this guy 4 years ago and he wants to be at BC. He has once and future OC Ryan Day and was smart enough too use Montel Harris this year. Spaz was a bad re ruiner who turned a lot of seemingly decent coaches into crap. Hopefully this will reverse itself.

Unknown said...

Last comment and I'm going off for the rest of the year. The AD blew it. This was BC's chance to do something great but it settled for a mediocre coach. There's no two ways about it Look at the winning coaches we have had, they have had winning records. This guy is coming off a losing season and was on the line to be fired. We picked him up. Anyone could see the fan base would not be inspired by this pick. We were worried about the Notre Dame coach getting away and we end up with this. Just for the sake of giving us hope you'd have wanted someone different than a guy like this.

EL MIZ said...

why is bringing back Ryan Day a good thing? the offense fell apart under him and Rodgers, and now we are bringing them back?

awful hire. we made a mistake chasing Golden around and not just going full bore after Diaco with a blank check.

as others have said, you get what you pay for. we will again have the lowest paid coaching staff in the ACC and again we'll finish in the basement.

i will wait to see who the coaching staff is but this was a chance to break from the Spaz and Gene FAILED ERA and instead we get more of the same. truly headscratching.

AlbanyEagle said...

This is a shocking disappointment.
And yet, I'm shocked that I'm shocked. Absolutely typical BC BS.

How sadly naive we all have been, expecting and believing we were finally in for an awakening, a fresh start, with a new, hungry AD who was going to go out and spend $$ to get us a great, exciting coach to turn everything around. Christ, I feel like Bates is going to peel off a mask, a la Mission Impossible, to reveal that he actually is GDF in disguise.

Actually this is kind of surreal. Did this just really happen? In what bizarro universe does this hire inspire enthusiasm? Next we'll see Spaz get the Tennessee job.

I feel badly for our poor players, who are now going to have to pretend their excited about their new coach, just like they had to pretend they thought their old coach wasn't terrible.

As the fanbase melts away...

Ever to Excel, my ass.

I'm loosing it.

Henning12 said...

This is what you get when you hire an AD from the MAC. He rebuffed by his top 3 choices. Steve was so off the radar and was the "nuclear option" if all else fails. Bates was even rebuffed by his colleagues in the MAC. We should just fold the program now and use the money to buy out our under performing and embarrassing men's bball coach.

AlbanyEagle said...

What a joke. BC is a joke and will be for five more years. He can't recruit, is not exactly innovative, isnt young enough to be "young". BC will stay in last place in the ACC for the foreseeable future. On the plus side, at least we can "lock down" the New England market for high school players. Both of them.

I predict 12 wins in three seasons and then fired.

ccw said...

I don't like the hire. Would have preferred Lembo as a coach with experience in multiple places. Feels very much like we went cheap (thanks Leahy).

It is interesting in this sense. If this had occurred a year earlier, some might feel differently. Addazio inherited a good MAC roster and won 8-9 games. Pretty good for Temple.

In year 2 they dropped to 4 wins. Not the right direction. Wouldn't buy the purging of malcontents and bums that people see when coaches change (i.e., it's going to get worse before it gets better).

As an OC, Florida's offense struggled when he took over post-Tebow.

I know he can recruit. BC fans are typically ignorant and wouldn't know that. But is this what we call a proven HC? 2 yrs of mediocre?

AA said...

If 100 BC fans each provided Bates with 10 names....Addazio would not have been one of the 1000 names given to our new AD.

Trying to walk back from ledge and be rational. Def not excited but I think calling him Spaz 2.0 is a bit much .. Other than them both being Italian and having Ryan Day on their staff what really is alike about them? Addazio is known as a good recruiter (Spaz def was not)...

From SI:
"Addazio was a favorite of Tim Tebow at Florida because of his energy and enthusiasm, and his raucous pregame speeches became known as Vitamin Addazio."--- that doesnt really sound like Spaz.

I dunno... im not excited... but I can't say he is Spaz 2.0 just yet.

Terrible hire. I'm a Temple Graduate School Alumni 1996, and follow Temple football, but BC is my 1st as a 91 Alumnus.

1) Temple Football trending the wrong way after Al Golden and the Big East isnt much better than the MAC.

2) Nothing they did on offense was exciting or innovative.

3) When the ACC disappears, BC will have no major conference options.

4) As a Colorado resident, this might be good, we can be like Colorado College and not have to worry about football and basketball

5) I have lost faith in Bates already and cannot believe his twittering and public relations moves had me fooled.

6) I am so pissed off at this hire because we had a chance to change the football culture and we didn't (see FSU & Clemson legacy hires did not improve them at all). So we get Rogers, Day, etc... all back? Depressing.

7) Woo Hoo - My Saturdays are free

8) Sent my email to BC development to see how my donations can be allocated to hockey only.

Color me most concerned about why Addazio never got a head job until Temple at 51 years old. I'm probably in the minority but I wanted Sullivan. Oh well, Go Eagles, Beat Harvard! ( pathetic )

Andrew S. said...

While it does speak volumes about the hire that the majority of posts from the blogging community are negative and the best ones lukewarm, it does the school, team and the alumni no service to be so petulant in your reactionary tantrum.

Thanks ATL, for at least having the sense to filter your public reaction in a way befitting a BC alumnus.

eagleboston said...

Why is everyone assuming Addazio will bring his current assistants with him? It is rarely the case that all assistants are hired for a new job.

I'm slowly warming to this guy. ESPN Boston says Bates "nailed it."

EL MIZ said...

at the end of the day, what do any of us know? each candidate has pro's and con's. the pro side of addazio is championship experience as an o-line coach and OC with florida, he's apparently a good recruiter (recruited dwight freeney to Syracuse, aaron hernandez to Florida), he's energetic, he has Head Coaching experience.

Cons are it seems like Diaco was a better option; his last year at Temple is hardly inspiring; he is on the wrong side of 50; he may bring back BC coach retreads like Day and Rodgers who oversaw our program decline.

who will be on the Coaching staff? will addazio get any temple recruits (they have a few good ones) to change?

BC is currently getting drubbed to Harvard. i am not looking forward to the next coaching search, but if the hoops team continues to lose to Bryant and harvard at home, Donahue's gonna have to go as well.

Right, because black guys are good at basketball because they're black. That isn't racist at all.

Given the vitriolic response of our fanbase, this doesn't seem to be a good hire. I think the fans deserved some appeasement after putting up with Spaz for as long as they did. I'm also not thrilled with the ageism running rampant, but image does matter and no one seems remotely happy with this.

That said, the people saying they'd be happier in the Patriot League are absolute fools. We graduate players to the NFL year in and year out and we were competing at respectable levels not so long ago.

Hopefully the new coach has more upside than we currently think. It's a shame it's not the lightning in the bottle that some had hoped for, but no coach is a magician.

TheFive said...

ATL...how did this happen? That's all any of us want to know. There will be plenty of time to try to talk ourselves into the idea that Addazio might succeed. But please tell us how this happened.

Also, it appears from Bates's press conference that he has no idea how this hire will be received by BC's most loyal fans. Can he really be that out of touch that he thinks that this is a homerun hire? Or is he trying to cover up the fact that the first 8 guys he offered the job to turned him (or BC) down?

The only thing I can imagine is that everyone else turned the job down and/or cheap ass BC wasnt willing to pony up yet again. Lets face it, we had a good thing going with Big Al and TOB. Neither was flashy and neither was ever going to win a national title. That said, they were willing to stick around for the most part and get paid significantly less than their peers. They also built consistent winning programs. I will forever believe that TOB would never have won 11 and 10 games the way Jags did because he simply had a "not to lose mentality". On the other hand, Jags went all out in every way, including his desire to get the hell off the Heights as soon as he got something better. If only then though did I realize that the days of TOB and Al were as good as it was going to get. We now have Donahue who, lets just be honest, has been a complete and utter disaster. Basketball, unlike football can be turned around very quickly due to a reliance on only a handful or more of players. Outside of Anderson, every other Donahue recruit has been awful. On top of that, there continue to be mass defections. This team will once again be the doormat of the ACC just like the football team. Now they hire Stache Part 2 and wonder why the alumni/students/fans are ticked? The guy could barely tread water at frickin Temple in the terrible Big Least. I love how they use the excuse that he "had MAC talent in the Big Least'. The frickin MAC is better than the Big Least!!!!

good to hear the peanut gallery on this one. as we all know, BC is renowned for it's knowledgable fanbase.

we may have been victims of misleading stories in the media that allowed us to get our hopes up for a bigger splash. the sense i get is that the university wants what bates is selling in the type of person that will represent our team and our school.

for my part, i'll keep in mind that BC is a great school, with a good tradition and that we have won before without the splash and that we can do so again. i don't know enough to pass judgement on a guy who i have never seen coach and about whom i know nothing. sounds like golden wasn't interested and diaco may now be chasing wisco....we don't know who else was being looked at. really, who else did we expect?

He has way, way more enthusiasm than Spaz. Like it or not, he's our guy so let's get behind him and at least give him a shot. I'm a BC alum and fan through thick and thin and I want BC to return to greatness more than anyone. No where in any of Bates' comments before or after Dazoo's Disaster hiring does he say the word WIN.

Earth to buster Bates -- it's about winning, as in winning national chamnpionships. There are no points awarded for building a "family culture." This is big-time (I use the term loosely) football, not a cub scout camp.

The only person in the BCAA I hear talking about winning trophies is Jerry York, which might be the reason his team is the only one that ever wins trophies there.

As for Dazoo's commitment to family culture, how about the way he ran out on his Temple "family" two years into his relationship. This is the guy Bates wants to be "joined at the hip" with? Mr. Bates, you have just been conned.

And let's reserve judgement about Dazoo being a great recruiter. His incoming class for Temple has two, count 'em two, three-star players among the 11 verbal commits. That's Spazoo level recruiting. It's a lot tougher recruiting to doormat programs like Temple, and now BC, than it is at Florida when Pope Urban Meyer is the coach coming off a national title.

This hiring is a first-class master disaster that guarantees dismal results probably for the rest of the decade. The family that Spazoos together and Dazoos together loses together.

The best thing is BC has Dazoo locked up for the next 6 long, losing years. Our only hope is Leahy-wahoo and our Fig Newton BOT head Mrs. McGoo are gone by the time the contract expires.

Legal Eagle said...

I am not as excited about this hire as I would have been about Doeren, Golden, Diaco, etc. But that being said, we don't have all the information. We know that Bates did an extensive search and and interviewed all the candidates.

We know Doeren jumped at the NC State job and I am glad Bates took his time and didn't let that cause a reactionary offer.

Golden likely could not be afforded due to his buyout and the large salary he would command. He also just may have preferred to wait for a better opportunity.

Maybe Diaco just wasn't that impressive. Or maybe his asking price was so high that he priced himself out of the job. Or maybe he just wanted to practice interviewing for jobs that he really wants.

In the end Addazio has more upside than anyone is giving him credit for. He is energetic, he can recruit and he has been around some great coaches during his career. He is just as much of a sure thing as Diaco was whether anyone wants to admit it or not. If we got him for half of what Diaco was asking, then I think it has the potential to be a great hire.

I am reserving judgment.

Bravesbill said...

Legal--Run, Run, Pass, Punt. Remember those series we had all the time with Spaz? Addazio is the king of this sequence. Florida fans ran him out of time because that's all he did and Temple fans grumbled all the time this year with this playcalling. Do we really want a Spaz 2.0 at the helm?

Upon reflection, I think what bothers me most about this hire is to what is says about BC's ambitions. As was mentiond above, BB never said the word "WIN". What does BC want to be? It seems like it wants to be a good family atmosphere with kids who are good schools reps and get good grades and graduate. If the football team for 5-7, or 6-6, or 7-5, that's all fine.

As fans of the team, we want them to win championships! The disconnect is that we root for a team not principally focused on the same end goal.

BCAlum2000 said...

I love the nitwits who have to chime in with the obligatory, "lets give him a chance" and "those who are bashing this are not true BC fans", etc. Shut the eff up. This was a terrible hire through and through. Might he be successful? Sure. But this garbage that I am hearing is the same garbage I heard when Spaz was hired. "Give the guy a chance". "He deserves to at least coach one game before he is bashed". SHUT THE EFF UP. As for the "family culture" and all that garbage that he supposedly brings, which is based on nothing I might add, tell that to the Temple kids he bailed out on after just two years. Or how about the fact that a month after taking the Temple job a couple years ago, he tried to bail on them before ever coaching a game when the UConn job opened up. Delusional idiots.

BCAlum2000 said...

Also, to those supposedly enlightened Eagles fans who are talking down to those who dare say that this is a terribly disappointing hire at best, why dont you go and find out the financial details of his contract. And when you see it is no where near the supposed $2 million BC was willing to pay this time around, then come back and tell me again how this guy was chosen because of his performance on the field ... including his 4-7 record at terrible Temple in the terrible Big Least.

EL MIZ said...

perhaps Addazio and Bates aren't the problem, but instead our revered leader Fr. Leahy.

we need to take a look at the broader landscape -- schools BC competes with like ND, Stanford, Duke, and Vanderbilt -- are making big time investments in college sports and football coaches in particular. they obviously see the value-add of having good sports teams on campus, how it helps with fundraising, student life, keeping alumni close, etc.

this hiring wreaks of Leahy saying "spend another 1 mil per year on a HC" just like we did with Spaz, which is bottom of the barrel in the ACC and bottom across the 6 major conferences. you get what you pay for, and while i hope i am wrong and hope that Addazio is a perfect fit and we turn it around, it seems to me like we are basically swapping out Spaziani for Addazio and being happy with a 6-win ceiling.

maybe we need to wait for Leahy and a new BoD to adjust to the 21st century college landscape to realize (A) where BC stands and (B) what BC needs to do to stay competitive.

we'll see. oh by the way, BC basketball lost to harvard for the 5th straight year. somehow, HARVARD in the freaking ivy league, had a better recruiting class than we did last year, and their freshman PG completely outplayed our 2 freshman PGs.

we stink in football, we stink in hoops. thank god for hockey which i don't watch.

BCAlum2000 said...

To which you've contributed through the childish garbabge you're posting.

Ry,
Are you enlightened and the rest of not? Probably the other way around.

I posted this earlier but I will say it again. Addazio - whatever - was a candidate previously. Now he is hired by the new AD?!

The hire was made by the BOD and not Brad Bates.

So we were thrown off by the media but at the same time the hire was not made independently by Bates which makes the prospects for the future grim. It seems like maybe Spaz and Gene were being hamstrung by the Univeristy which again makes the hope garnered by the hire of Bates moot if he is now a puppet for the UNiversity and not strictly representing the Athletic Department.

Andrew S you silly invalid, you know nothing about BC or its athletics program. The same crap you are spewing now, I am sure you spewed after Spaz was hired. Your whole notion of, "you guys are representing BC well because you are complaining", leads me to believe you are nothing but a dumb sheep ... in regards to that, if you actually did even attend BC, reference your Philosophy core and the readings of Nietzsche.

Not only was Adazzio a two-time loser previously for the BC job, I love how none of these "defenders" has anything to say about the fact that within ONE MONTH of his taking the Temple job he tried to bail on them and get the UConn job. After failing in that attempt, he successfully bailed on them after two years to get a job he already was turned down for twice. And what did he accomplish in those two years? He managed to go 13-11 and reverse all the progress made by Al Golden including a 4-7 mark this year in the pathetic Big Least. WOOOOO!!!! Time to get excited!

BravesBill -

Find a Reserve unit that deploys in May. Then, you'll be gone for the duration of the BC football season, but be back in time for the bulk of the hockey season. Problem solved.
