Keeping a presence in Cincy and other links

Shortly after the staff was assembled, Addazio also introduced their respective recruiting territories. Ohio was listed but there was no special mention of Cincinnati. Since Southwest Ohio has been a critical pipeline for BC for nearly 15 years, I had hoped that we would protect our base there. Now it looks like we are still going to hit our traditional feeder schools as BC has offered St. X's Nick Carovillano

Most of you probably read this by now, but Addazio's Q&A with ESPN is worth your time. Even though he has yet to even coach a game, I feel like I've changed my opinion on Addazio a dozens times. It will probably wear thin after a while, but for now I still like his passion and confidence.

Women's Hockey tied Vermont.

BC is going to be part of next Fall's 2k Sports Classic.

Lacrosse lost to Ohio State.

The baseball team lost to East Carolina on Friday.

The second half of this article mentions Montel Harris's talking point to the GMs at the Combine. It is a pretty simple explanation.

Montel's remark edited for truth (in ital)

""The NFL was on mind the whole time," Harris said. " By which I mean 'me, myself and I' was on my mind. What was best for me? Boston College is about "Team" But TEAM, as Coach Spaz always said, 'once again, there has never been an 'I" in team', and I am all about 'I.' BC was great. Thanks for the free $250,000 education and the chances you gave me. Yes, BC believed in me and taught me to believe in myself. And I do. I believe in I. Really! Two of my coaches from Boston College were at Temple, and they told me how to 'play' Spaz and get out of BC. It worked. Ryan Day rocks. They just had a running back go in the third round, so I'm thinking, 'They run the ball. They had a great running back go in the third round. So, why not go to Temple? Let's just say I put an 'I' in Temple' "". but, seriously, I love BC. I will be back when they induct me into the hall of fame.

i'm confused -- Montel didn't transfer to Temple, he was "dismissed" from BC. why is it being implied that Montel selfishly left school?

Boston College running back Montel Harris has been dismissed from the team, coach Frank Spaziani announced Tuesday.

"Montel Harris has been permanently dismissed from our football team due to a repeated violation of team rules," Spaziani said in a prepared statement. "We are grateful for his contributions the past four seasons and will support him in completing his degree requirements and in his future pursuits."

if the mod 34B's implication is as it reads, then you're suggesting Ryan Day told Montel how to get kicked off of the team so he could then go to Temple? if so, that is the most moronic thing i have read all week. the two red flags Montel has going into the Draft are durability and character issues related to his dismissal. he wouldn't have the 2nd red flag had he stayed at BC. this just makes no sense on just about every level so i will stop replying to it.

mod 34B, thanks for nothing, have a terrible Sunday.

also, go EAGLES today. here's hoping O can take over in Cameron and lead us to an upset.

EL Miz, you are wishing me ill because you disagree with me -- shameful. I hope you and all others have a great day, a Sunday.

I have no idea what happened with Montel, but reading the tea leaves from his quote it suggests he wanted to bail for selfish reasons and the Temple Coaches from BC were encouraging him to turn his back on BC.

What do you think happened? After 4 years of stellar conduct, Montel could no longer figure out how to obey team rules and/or could no longer figure out how 'not to get caught', and he was repeatedly caught breaking team rules. Poor Spaz had no choice but to dismiss him. Ryan Day, in his first OC gig in a run-based system and in desperate need for a quality RB, simply got lucky when Montel suddenly and shockingly became available?

Not. As Montel said, this was always about enhancing his NFL prospects.

EL MIZ said...

so you're suggesting that Day and other BC coaches encouraged him to get kicked out of school, so that he could go play in the A-10? LOL, i mean that is so far fetched it doesn't merit a response.

Montel and Spaziani butted heads, like a handful of other players, many of whom were suspended or kicked out of school. AFTER Montel got suspended I'm sure the BC coaches that knew him said "come to temple, we ran the ball a ton last year, we had a guy get drafted, we know you" etc and he went there.

you're interpretation ("reading the tea leaves") is comical and unbelievable.

mod34b said...

El Miz, BC apologist, maroon-colored glass wearer, let me correct you.

1. Harris did not get 'kicked out' of BC. He graduated from BC and took advantage of the "Russell Wilson" rule. Why? To increase his NFL prospects. Comical? No. Purposeful, yes.

2. Like Russel Wilson, moving school will be viewed by the NFL as a PLUS, not a minus or a question mark.

3. Temple was not in A10. They were in the BE. Before that they were not in the A10, they were in the MAC. Maybe they were in the A10 for football 30 yeears ago.

4. Montel just fell apart after 4 years at BC? -- not credible.

5. The BC coaches at Temple did not encourage Montel? -- not believable. Imagine how bad Temple under Day would have been without Montel.

6. Last, have a very good evening El MIZ

is Observer College's new user name "Mod 34 B"?

he was dismissed from the team -- that is "kicked off". his ESPN draft card notes "Good student and shows good football intelligence. However, permanently dismissed from Boston College due to a repeated violation of team rules in spring of 2012". he didn't "transfer" like Russell Wilson.

the implication that former BC coaches "suggested" how he could get himself kicked out so that he could play at Temple (BE; A-10 in bball, its been a long day) is just silly and ridiculous.

mod34b said...

El Miz - stick to hoops, you have no clue. You seem to be having some trouble owning up too. Instead, you slither.

you said, and I quote, HARRIS was "kicked out of school" Nope - he graduated.

and, per numerous reports, he did play at Temple by virtue of the Russell Wilson rule (which requires that the athlete graduate)

Russell Wilson graduated. No real need for Wilson or Harris to transfer. They each graduated and each simply enrolled in graduate school at another football playing school.

Hario said...

mod34b - do you have inside info that we are not privy to, because otherwise your interpretation seems to take a huge leap.

Yes Harris graduated but he was dismissed from the Boston College football team before he went to Temple.

He seems to just be answering the question as to why he picked Temple as the school to go to after he was dismissed. (his reasons - chance at NFL and familiarity with the coaching staff -- seems like a simple clear answer)

Russell Wilson wanted to go to another school so he asked for his release from NC State which they granted. So I guess the part I dont get is if Montell really just wanted to leave BC and go to Temple the whole time why wouldn't he have asked for his release first as oppose to trying to get dismissed from the football team and have his character questioned? (he may have graduated but I dont get how you are disputing that he was kicked off the football team)

Russell Wilson left NC State because TOB decided to start Glennon and he wanted a chance to start. (thus it was seen as a positive and not questioned by NFL teams)

Other than taking advantage of the same rule I don't really see the similarities.

EL MIZ said...

dude, what planet are you currently living on? don't answer that question, answer this one:

Why did Frank Spaziani issue a statement detailing that he had "dismissed" montel harris from the team. i will paste it again, since apparently you missed it last time:

Boston College running back Montel Harris has been dismissed from the team, coach Frank Spaziani announced Tuesday.

"Montel Harris has been permanently dismissed from our football team due to a repeated violation of team rules," Spaziani said in a prepared statement. "We are grateful for his contributions the past four seasons and will support him in completing his degree requirements and in his future pursuits."

no such announcement accompanied Russell Wilson going to Wisconsin, because he wasn't dismissed. yes, they both graduated. it does not change the fact that Harris was dismissed from BC's football team and only went to Temple after the dismissal.

Wilson was playing minor league baseball, TOB wasn't OK with that, and so Wilson transferred to Wisconsin. Wilson wasn't bounced from the team for repeteadly breaking the rules, as Harris was.

Spaz is a fool, and thank god he's gone. we won't have to lose good character guys like Montel. the insinuation that he was tipped off by Day as to "how" to violate team rules so that he could transfer to Temple is ludicrous.

mod34b said...

No, I have no inside info. Who does?

Harris was a free agent under the Russell Wilson rule.

No consent was needed so long as he graduated. Look it up.

Harris knew he was free to go. Spaz knew it and so did Day. So did Day. Put 2 and 2 together.

elMiz, BC apologist that you are, you believe a BC press release!! . Ha!

The dismissal was a farce. Spaz, it seems, was gratutiously denigrating one more player. There was no need for it. Harris was leaving.

Hario said...

I did look it up. You need to be denied a renewal of your scholarship which is in effect consent or a release once its been released (see below). The only difference is they don't have to sit out a year.

"Student-athletes who have graduated are subject to the same release requirements as undergraduates and must have at least one year of eligibility remaining. To be eligible for the one-time transfer exception, football, basketball, baseball and men’s ice hockey student athletes **must have been denied a scholarship renewal at their original school.** If the student-athlete wishes to pursue a degree program not offered at the original institution, he or she is eligible for a waiver to compete immediately at the new school." (Source: http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/public/NCAA/Resources/Latest+News/2012/May/Get+the+facts+about+transfers)

Second Source explaining the Rule (http://www.goutsa.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=13100&ATCLID=205405306)

"the most commonly used exception is known as the "one-time transfer exception." As the name suggests, this exception allows a student-athlete to transfer from one NCAA institution to another on one occasion and be immediately eligible for competition. Certain conditions must be met to use this exception, including: (1) the student-athlete must have been in good academic standing and academically eligible for competition at the previous institution; (2) **the previous institution must grant the student-athlete written permission to use of the exception;** and (3) the student-athlete cannot have transferred previously from a four-year institution."

I am not really sure what you are getting at. Obviously, the NCAA doesn't stop transfers. If the dismissal was 100% a farce why has Harris made no attempt to dispute that he was dismissed from the team (seems like that would be in his best interest). I don't dispute that his dismisal was probably for a stupid reason.

But your theory that he purposefully tried to break the rules to get kicked off the team seems silly especially if you are saying he did not need to do that since he was a "Free Agent." (which isnt true)

So are you saying he is not protecting his own reputation as part of some master BC scheme? -- I honestly just don't get what you are getting at.

EL MIZ said...

i agree with you that Montel was eligible for the grad student rule since he had already graduated. i disagree with your novel theory that Montel was not dismissed (even though there are numerous articles detailing that he was kicked off of the team) and rather decided to somehow stick it to BC since he is selfish to go play for temple. that makes zero sense, and you continue to dig yourself further and further into a silly and nonsensical hole.

why do you think every press release regarding Montel going to Temple indicated he had been kicked off of the team? If he had not been kicked off the team, as you say, why would he have never come out and said "I wasn't dismissed from the team, I transferred." isn't it strange that he never did so? isn't it strange that he never did so in light of the fact that websites breaking down the NFL draft list as a character weakness the fact that he was dismissed?

I trust Montel over Spaz, and don't think Montel left BC high and dry. on the contrary, i think old curmudgeon Spaz was out of touch and decided to "dismiss" a player who had the audacity to tell Spaz when his knee did or did not feel good.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8143531/ex-boston-college-eagles-rb-montel-harris-play-football-temple-owls

Harris suffered a knee injury in 2011 and took a medical redshirt, and then hurt the knee again in spring practice. In May, he was kicked off Boston College's team for repeated violations of team rules.

After that, speculation began that he would end up at Temple, where former Boston College assistants Ryan Day (now Temple's offensive coordinator) and Kevin Rogers (quarterbacks coach) have been hired.

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/colleges/temple/Montel-Harris-transfers-to-Temple.html

After being off kicked of the Eagles’ football team in May, Montel Harris has transferred to Temple. He arrived on campus Sunday.

The running back, who was released from Boston College’s program for a repeated violation of team rules, reunites with former Boston College wideouts coach Ryan Day and former Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Rogers.

Additional FAQ from NCAA that says you need a release from original school

"To qualify, the student-athlete needed to graduate, enroll in a graduate program not offered by the first institution, and receive permission from the first institution to be granted the waiver (like the one-time transfer exception)."

based on all of Mod34B's comments, he seems to have drawn 2 separate conclusions:

A) Montel is selfish. Moreover, Ryan Day called him and told him to break the rules and game the system so that he could get dismissed from BC and then he could play for Temple

mod 34b writes: "Two of my coaches from Boston College were at Temple, and they told me how to 'play' Spaz and get out of BC. It worked. Ryan Day rocks. They just had a running back go in the third round, so I'm thinking, 'They run the ball. They had a great running back go in the third round. So, why not go to Temple? Let's just say I put an 'I' in Temple'"

B) Montel did not get dismissed. rather, he left BC high and dry to go play for temple, and after the fact Spaz made a statement that he was in fact dismissed from the team. montel has never refuted this, even though it is not true and paints him in an unsavory light. he did this to "increase his NFL prospects" for reasons unknown, since Temple played in a lesser division on a team more irrelevant than BC. BC had 2 national TV games last year, how many did temple have?

mod34b wrote: "Harris did not get 'kicked out' of BC. He graduated from BC and took advantage of the "Russell Wilson" rule. Why? To increase his NFL prospects. Comical? No. Purposeful, yes. Like Russel Wilson, moving school will be viewed by the NFL as a PLUS, not a minus or a question mark."

none of this makes any sense.

REALITY: Spaz kicked Montel off of the team because they didn't get along and Montel wanted to control his rehab, flouted Spaz's authority, and possibly broke a few rules. Montel then transferred to a D1 school which employed several of his former coaches, and had a good season.

Conclusions: I wish Montel the best of luck, as he isn't selfish and didn't game the system. Mod34B, in an attempt to smear a former player who played through injury and carried the load offensively for 3 seasons, has made up a handful of completely illogical conclusions, none of which are supported by any evidence whatsoever.

You guys need a tune up on the research skills. El Miz needs to avoid the ad hominem attack He should be saying 'thank you' for being educating - again

The NCAA rule was changed in 2011 so NO CONSENT WAS NEEDED. Here is blurb from USA today followed by the actual 2011 NCAA Rule.

"Graduate students who have not previously transferred can use the one-time transfer exception to play right away at their new school.

If a player has completed his undergraduate coursework and has a year of eligibility remaining, he's good to go.

No waiver is necessary — a change implemented at the start of the 2011-12 season, according to the NCAA — so it's easier than ever for graduates to play immediately."

14.1.9 G raduate Student/Postbaccalaureate Participation. A student-athlete who is enrolled in a
graduate or professional school of the same institution from which he or she previously received a baccalaureate
degree, a student-athlete who is enrolled and seeking a second baccalaureate or equivalent degree at the same institution,
or a student-athlete who has graduated and is continuing as a full-time student at the same institution
while taking course work that would lead to the equivalent of another major or degree as defined and documented
by the institution, may participate in intercollegiate athletics, provided the student has eligibility remaining and
such participation occurs within the applicable five-year period set forth in Bylaw 14.2 (see Bylaw 14.1.8.2.1.4).
(Revised: 1/10/90, 1/16/93 effective 8/1/93)
14.1.9.1 One-Time Transfer Exception. [FBS/FCS] A graduate student who is enrolled in a graduate or
professional school of an institution other than the institution from which he or she previously received a baccalaureate
degree may participate in intercollegiate athletics if the student fulfills the conditions of the one-time
transfer exception set forth in Bylaw 14.5.5.2.10 and has eligibility remaining per Bylaw 14.2. A graduate student
who does not meet the one-time transfer exception due to the restrictions of Bylaw 14.5.5.2.10-(a) shall
qualify for this exception, provided: (Adopted: 1/9/96 effective 8/1/96, Revised: 4/27/06, 1/6/07 effective 8/1/07,
4/28/11 effective 8/1/11)
(a) The student fulfills the remaining conditions of Bylaw 14.5.5.2.10;
(b) The student has at least one season of competition remaining; and
(c) The student’s previous institution did not renew his or her athletically related financial aid for the following
academic year.

Hario said...

You are right no waiver is necessary but waiver is defined as going to the NCAA and asking for permission... Thats not what im talking about.

Quoting the rule you posted "14.1.9.1 One-Time Transfer Exception. [FBS/FCS] A graduate student who is enrolled in a graduate or
professional school of an institution other than the institution from which he or she previously received a baccalaureate
degree may participate in intercollegiate athletics if the student fulfills the conditions of the one-time
transfer exception set forth in Bylaw 14.5.5.2.10 and has eligibility remaining per Bylaw 14.2."

You left out the conditions of the one time transfer set forth by Bylaw 14.5.5.2.10... That's where the third condition is a release from the school

If you remember russell wilson needed this and his release was conditioned that he did not go to an ACC school or opponent on the NC state 2011 schedule.

But I guess how you say they essentially become a Free Agent.

What I still dont understand is why he would get himself kicked of the team to transfer to another school. If it works exactly how you say and you dont need to do anything to leave there is even less reason to get kicked of the team or if he really wasnt than to dispute that Spaz press release that he was dismissed. I guess I'm just missing what your point is.
