House of Horrors

One day we will win in Chapel Hill. Today certainly wasn't the day as BC lost and fell to 3-4 on the season.

The defense had its moments. So did Andre Williams. Rettig didn't. There were plays to make but he either missed his targets or took bad sacks. I don't know if he's lost his confidence or trying to do too much, but it wasn't pretty. The good news is that there is still much to play for...all we need is the offense to get back on track.

I will have second viewing thoughts and grades late Sunday.

"all we need to do is get the offense back on track."

we ran for over 200 yards today. Williams ran 26 times for 172 yards, including our lone touchdown.

Rettig needs to either figure out how to be effective, or his career as the starting QB needs to end and Bordner can step in and show us what he can do.

we can run the ball. we simply cannot pass the ball. people who think we need to pass more just baffle me. who is going to throw, and who is going to catch?

I'm with you EL Miz. Passing killed any of our offensive drives today. Even with UNC knew we were going to run, we still managed to get 3 yds on the play. All you need is 2.5 per down.

Everyone has bad games -- Chase Rettig is allowed to have them too. I don't think the protection was as great as people on chat boards seem to think and I don't think the playcalling was good either. A lot to play for still, there's still a chance to do some good things and BC can end up with a record we all would have been thrilled with at the start of the year.

The discouraging part for sure is that we are back to "same ol' BC". We play very well in games where we have no chance and we play like dog balls in games we should be competitive in. I am beginning to think that this pattern has to do with our talent level and less with our Coaches because it has been a theme since the early 90s, except for the Matt Ryan years.

Benjamin: if we averaged 2.5 yards per carry that would mean 3 and out every offensive possession . (@4th and 2.5 yards we would punt)

Really need to average more like 3.5 yards per carry to be an effective rush team

Miz: we can pass. Short balls. Didn't see much of that today eg fullback wheel route. Didn't see that. Rettig rolling out and hitting short out routes. Didn't see that. Short TE routes with quick QB ball release. Didn't see that either. Without a credible passing threat we are doomed. Simple as that, particularly as a non-option run-between-the-tackles team.

Well dont forget we have the brilliant Ryan Day calling plays he did play QB for Chip Kelly at UNH so of course he is a genius!

That was awful. And emblematic of two things:a lack of talent and an inconsistent QB. There is no reason to score 10 against that defense.

I feel bad for Rettig and then I remember he elevates no one. But he's a college kid, so I'll support him until we finish 5-7. We need. More. Talent.

Day did not hold the ball too long. Day didn't miss a single throw. Rettig is simply not what we wanted and hoped for. Talent or temperament, they are all wrapped up together, but he doesn't have it. No progressions, just locked in until it is too late. Very reluctant to throw it away. No "pocket presence".

How many times did I hear the guys in the booth say " Rettig had receivers open on the field but did not pull the trigger." And, how many of the sacks might be a result of Rettig waiting for Amedon to get open rather than throwing to someone else???? Somehow this offense needs find a player other than Amedon who can catch the ball and make the QB confident.

There was too much passing. At the same time we did not run screen passes or throw the ball deep.

Bad play calling.

It seems like Addazio is telling Rettig no matter what do not throw an interception. He is gun shy.

Silva being thown out was garbage. I know what the penalty language is and he did not break the rule. That impacted our ability to handle their screen passes.

Game sucked.

5 wins are in the bag. We need to beat VT or NC State to get to 6/7. They are our best chance because they are home games.

Why blame Daz for Rettig's inability. Every coach will try to avoid turnovers. Why was Sylvia thrown out? Anti BC bias, I guess.

When was the last time that Rettig put the team on his back and won a game? After showing promise early in his career, Rettig has stalled. He should be seeing the field better, going through his progressions and making throws. He is an average, meaning mediocre, Division I QB.
