Playing Notre Dame at Fenway is a good thing

The Globe reported that Fenway Sports Group is in talks with BC about moving our 2015 Notre Dame game from Alumni to Fenway Park. There are some sensible objections and BC fan complaints, but I think BC should make this happen.

As soon as Notre Dame agreed to partial ACC membership, our relationship with them changed. While still the only other Catholic university playing FBS football, we were no longer going to be an annual opponent for the Irish. Going forward we are just part of their ACC rotation and will play them six out of every ten years. That's nice, but it is not longer special. We can still view them as a rival, but we will play them less often and they will just view us as another ACC team. Our chance (other than winning) to keep this series unique and passionate is to do special things. A game in Ireland has been tossed around for more than five years. But the logistics of that game are always a little daunting, especially given the ho-hum payout. Moving just one of our Notre Dame games from Alumni to Fenway spices things up. It would certainly generate local interest and media attention. Considering how hard we fight for attention now, playing at Fenway once seems like a no brainer. While Fenway has fewer seats, BC could still assure season ticket holders of tickets to the Fenway game and let the general public scramble for the remaining tickets.

We've had masses at Fenway and played plenty of hockey games there. Most BC fans in the area have probably been to the old park for multiple Sox games. I understand if the novelty has worn off. But a football game would be different. It would mark a return to our history and would bring out a big Irish and casual crowd who just want to say they were there. If the teams are decent, Gameday might cover it too. If the crowd is more divided than it might be for a traditional Notre Dame game at Alumni, so be it. The trade-off is worth it.

We've discussed all sorts of neutral site games with Notre Dame. We've also looked at bringing a game to Fenway. This solves both of those desires. If the only reasons not to do it are due to the politics of giving into the Irish or giving up a game, I say don't worry about it. We need to try new things and there is always risk in that. I think this would be a huge success home run.

Alumni is bigger and we have no problem selling that out for ND.

As a season ticket holder and one who donates to tailgate at BC, why would I want to give up the most attractive game on our home schedule?

What is the upside? "It would certainly generate local interest and media attention." Great more Sullies from Southie who cheer for ND because they're irish as well.

It's dumb.

I would not be favor of special treatment for ND. It makes BC seem so desperate to gain favor with ND. BC does not need ND. Less we do for arrogant ND, the better .

No thanks.

I generally shy away from this, but could go along if it was part of a one time promotional package that included ND giving up a home game in South Bend for a game at Soldier Field in Chicago, and a firm agreement for a net extra game in Ireland where neither school has to surrender a planned home game.

I attended a Red Sox game a couple years ago and, while quaint, the amenities are horrid. The only stadium I have been to that is more run down is Wrigley. Plus, they charge a fortune for food and parking. It is not designed for football. I really don't see the point in moving this off campus (don't we want to show the Domers we have a beautiful campus too?)

Bc played all their home games for a season at Fenway during the late 1950's. I attended these games and Fenway is a terrible place to watch a football game.
Leave the game on campus or move it to Gillette if you want to sell more tickets, anywhere but Fenway.

NDNation lists the 2015 BC game as a home game for ND. If ND is giving up a home game and putting it in Boston instead, more power to them, seems like a huge win for BC. Extra game in Boston for the 2015 season.

I'll have to assume that there's more to the negotiation, ATL, any details?

I'm all for this.
1. Alumni gives no home field advantage.I love bc and alumni is ok, but lets not pretend it gives us any sort of home field advantage. Even at its best it doesn't get that loud (and I'll avoid the "down in front" crowd argument for now and its impact on the noise in the stadium).
2. Its great for alums who live in the city and alum/friends/family visiting to see the game. Fenway is a quick (<30min) walk from most places in Town and makes it easier to see friends before and after the game without the foolishness of our tailgate system (see: Shea Field).
3. Great for BC Locally. Ties the team closer to boston. Gives us a better status as boston's CFB team.
4. Its looks great for BC Nationally. It ties the school with Fenway, the City, and Mystique, etc...If we play at Fenway there's a good chance Gameday will be there as well.

I couldn't disagree with this more and think ATL only feels that way because he doesn't actually attend BC games.

I won't sit here and type them on my phone but I bet I could come up with 45 reasons not to do this before I would concede any one reason to do this.

That is all. Merry Christmas!

should have added this to my prior post My favorite BC highlight!

Agree with Eric, believe much of ATL's stance regarding this game is derived from him not going to games at Alumni.

Hoib - great link. I love that play. BJ Raji man-handles ND's 4-star recruit Eric Olsen - a 300 lb OG who would go on to an NFL career. On Raji: "This guy is an NFL prospect" Indeed!

Here is your link in clickable form Raji uses ND OG as Prop

And, I will add, we should treat ND in the same way the BJ Raji did, in the same way Rich Gunnell did.

If this is a Notre Dame home game, how will it be a good thing to play in Fenway Park when the Irish have full control over ticket allotment?

How easy was it for Army fans to get tickets in 2010 when it was in Yankee Stadium?

If this removes the game from Alumni, its a lame and stupid idea to boost the wallets of Fenway Marketing Group. If this removes an ND home game - its just lame and stupid but of less concern. Notre Dame is just a draw for the over 70 whalepants crowd. The rest of us are just as happy playing Clemson or Virginia Tech or Florida State.

As good a football play as u will ever see.
It was brought up in the recruiting
post that we are short on DT's. Boy could we use 1 like B.J.!

Every time I watch the BJ highlight I have a new feeling of rage towards whomever in DeFilippo's office allowed Raji's schedule to leave him one credit short(. The idea of a Raji/Brace 700+ lb interior d-line with matty ice at his peak was the best chance of my lifetime for a BC national championship.

Cata

Here's some rage u can point towards the Fighting A**holes. Look at the dirty block on Brace in the clip.

That clip was bad, but nothing compares, however, to that POS OL Butler from UVA and his clip of Kiwi. I saw that live and I almost jumped down on the field.
