No scoring against the 'Noles

Now we know a bit more about the team. The BC D is legit. Aside from the opening drive, they dominated Florida State's Offense. But it was a wasted effort, because BC's Offense couldn't do anything in a 14-0 loss. It was the first time an Addazio BC team has been shutout. Aside from the losing, the bigger concern is that Darius Wade went down with an ugly looking leg injury. Both Flutie and Smith saw time after Wade went to the bench.

I have a lot of criticism of Addazio and Fitch's approach, but I will save that for the Sunday post. I am frustrated, but think the Defense is good enough to get BC to a bowl game. Let's just hope they can figure something...anything out on offense.

I will have second viewing thoughts and grades up late Sunday.

D looks awesome. Held Florida State to 217 yards. Just 98 on the ground. They were only 4-13 on 3rd down. They held Cook to 54 yards.

Offense is really, really bad. Even Texas State managed to score 16 points. The O-line is not good enough to push Addazio's run philosophy. They are going to have to open things up and Flutie is the guy to do it. He will struggle, but he will also give the unit a spark.

Atl, thinks the defense can get is bowling. However, we have to win 7 games, not 6. With this offense, I am not sure where BC gets to 7 wins. If BC loses next week, there will be no bowl in '15.

Get us bowling, not is.

EB, I'd have to disagree with you on Flutie. Flutie may be able to open things up but without a passing play in the playbook or a receiver who can catch the ball, I don't think Flutie is a good fit. Smith is the go to guy now.

D was really good after first series. - really good. I think Kavalek relaxed and Golson knocked him out of the game.

Did Wade get a broken foot? He got squashed.

It's a young offense. Growing pains. Keep marching forward save your negativity for the sawx

Wow! I did not realize how good the defense is!

Wow! I did not realize how bad the offense is

Our offensive line was bad and the Addazio game plan was bad too

That Hillimam fumble was ridiculous. Something very off about Hilliman this year. Not the same RB as last year.

Hilliman is not the same RB because we have no offensive line and he has no room to run. We ran on 12 straight first downs in the middle of the game. Walter Payton wouldn't have gained yards running predictable plays, behind a bad line, and against a good defense. It's not rocket science. Nor is the Daz TM offensive scheme.

My worst case, from post yesterday, scenario played out. The Center and QB are hurt. Those are two positions we could not afford to have injuries.

The defense is GREAT.

a few thoughts:

- refs missed a clear facemask on the Hilliman fumble.
- agree that Hilliman doesn't look as powerful as he did last year. Willis looks like the most explosive back we have. he runs the hardest and is the fastest back we have. he's also the most experienced. i wouldn't mind him getting the bulk of the carries moving forward, with Outlow and Hilliman coming in to spot him.
- Addazio/Frye need to get the OL in better shape. i have a feeling it will be a work in progress throughout the season.
- my guess is, like we saw last night, we see a mix of Smith and Flutie moving forward. i doubt they fully commit to one guy but could be wrong. best case scenario is Smith runs the option stuff well enough and breaks a few that he wins the job outright.
- the Defense is good enough to get us 5 more wins.

Darius Wade is out for the season with a broken ankle. Needs surgery today.

Breaks my heart that a defense that good isn't getting a bit of help.

I don't know that we have the offensive line designed to be able to run an option offense for Smith.

I'd like to see Flutie start with some ability to pass and Smith as a "change -of-pace" in appropriate situations.

Bravesbill said...

You could say that about Flutie too. The o-line isn't good enough to pass protect and there's no one to catch the ball.

Knucklehead said...

It will be Smith because we have no receivers. He is not going to last very long though. Cannot wait to see Flutie start against ND in Fenway. We ought to sign his receiver from Natick High. He could catch passes better than any one we have now.

I watched the game at a bar, so wasn't able to concentrate fully. But sure looked like Wade had no touch on the ball. No connection to housebroken ankle -- poor kid -- just was a disappointing given how the Dazzler had spoken about him.

* to his broken ankle. My browser seemed to autocorrect badly.

It's a complete toss up at QB. But it all starts with the O-line. That is the foundation. Once the O-line is solidified, the offense can start forming an identity.

I think people are pushing the panic button a little early. W/ this D, so much better than last year, we should be in every game. The offense is very young, and should get better as we go through the season I think we play Smith and bring Flutie in relief, when we are behind in the second half.
