Carter kills BC at Clemson

Without Eli Carter, BC wins this game. That might seem unfair or diminishing the attention he draws on offense, but I really think he cost BC. His defense, his selfish shot selection and his cold shooting are the reason BC lost to Clemson. As the broadcast team said, the score doesn't indicate how close the game was.

There were some bright spots. Clifford's good run continued. The only thing that slowed him were fouls. Barnes-Thompkins came off the bench and provided a much-needed spark. The 2-3 zone is looking better and hiding some of this team's issues. We are still not rebounding well for a 2-3 team, but the guys are getting better with their assignments. The defensive breakdowns came mostly off of slow rotations or when BC played man-to-man.

I don't know what Christian is going to do with Carter. Is a 24-year-old at his third school willing to take coaching and constructive criticism? If he sits will the other teams just collapse down on Clifford? Will it help or hurt the locker room?  BC is not playing for the postseason. At this point it is about building for the future and gaining a little bit of respectability...and winning a conference game. Christian needs to decide how Carter fits into that plan.

good point on how Christian should proceed. also need to be mindful of how it will be perceived by other 5th years if Carter just gets kicked to the curb. don't want to set a bad precedent.

that said, there are 5 games left and all of them are winnable. there's literally nothing to play for except next year, and i know that Carter isn't gonna be around next year. now, it could just be that with Robinson out and Graves on the way and not yet here, we don't have the ballhandling depth to just kick Carter to the curb as much as I'd like to. Carter played 35 minutes tonight, but SBT (who i like a lot) played 31, Hicks played 29, and Milon (the only other ballhandler, arguably) played only 20. this is why JIMBO gets paid the big bucks - to figure it out. i will certainly not miss Eli.

i will miss Dennis. what could have been. i was a vocal critic of the Whistler, but is hard not to think what could have been. Ryan Anderson (albeit as a 5th year senior on a far superior team) is averaging 16/10 and is arguably the best player on the 12th team in the country. Joe Rahon is averaging 10-6-5 for St Mary's. Olivier Hanlan would have been a senior too (he's handling himself pretty well over in Lithuania).

here's hoping Turner, Robinson, SBT, Milon, and Ty Graves are all in BC uniforms in a few years - this program badly need some continuity.

I just don't understand why Christian did not take Carter out of the game much earlier when it was obvious that cumulative fatigue had caught up with him. Carter's performance during the waning moments of the game was absurd - it should not have been allowed to happen. I would have preferred spreading the game closing pressure among the younger players even if the outcome were the same.

How about taking JIm Christian out of the game? This is year 2 and the guy can't even win a conference game. He was the wrong guy from Day 1 and should be held accountable for doing nothing since he has arrived.

It does no good to bring this up now, but why wasn't a PG brought in w/ this class? You have 3 guys who play the same spot, Robinson,SBT,and Milon. Throw in Hicks, and I don't see how we can find minutes for all 4 going forward. The Carter issue is really on the coach, you have to question how he could have thought the kid could play point. I can understand why he didn't bring in a 4, there hard to find, but a decent PG either freshman or 5th year should have been doable.

Best case scenario 4 O's guys last year maybe they were an NIT team. To be a quality ACC team you need 2 NBA guys on the floor. We'll see if Anderson, and Clif get any interest. I doubt it. JC hasn't shown much so far, but I think he knows what it takes to win in the ACC, Onahue was clueless on that point. Whether JC can get it done is another matter, so far you'd have to say no.

I should have added, we have come to the zone awfully late, w/ no 4 man we should have been playing it all year.

Carter wants to shoot his way into the NBA. To him, that is all that matters. BC needs to cut him loose now. He cannot be allowed to hold the team and university hostage. The team will be 0-18 in conference with or without him. If you sit his sorry rump now, there will be other players getting some valuable experience.

The problem isn't Carter wanting to shoot his way into the NBA, its his shot selection. If he was getting up good looks that would be one thing, the frustration is when he dribbles the ball around the top of the key for 25 seconds then throws up an unbalanced miracle as the shot clock expires.

I personally think Carter is a decent player, he just takes way too many drive/run killing shots and total shifts the direction of the game. I don't know if that is Christian giving him too much leeway or if its Carter just saying "F it I'm gonna get mine" but on a net basis, he has defiantly been a detriment to the offensive progression of this team.

At this point, unfortunately, it doesn't make sense to sit him since the year is over (will look awful for any future 5th years that JC tries to bring in, which he should do for a big next year), but hopefully JC can work in some of the younger guys to gain experience for next season, including SBT who I think has played well the last few games.

Hoib,

I think the answer to your PG question was that they felt Jerome Robinson, despite his side, could play the point. Not to mention, if they had brought in a PG this season, he would just sit behind the black hole Eli Carter, and wouldn't have seen any real PT, putting BC in the same spot they will find themselves next year with Graves

It seems that Christian may be making a late play for a PG as well with the offer they just extended to Kyran Bowman (would be an excellent late addition to the class, was UNC FB commit and decided to focus on bball, thus the late recruiting process, has yukon and tulsa going to see him this week as well, but BC was the first major to offer him).

I've been saying this since the start of the season.

My assumption was that w/ a PG Carter would play 2, a position that he could have been more help at. Christian was way off if he thought this guy could play 1.

I don't pretend to have much knowledge about b'ball, but it seems to me that Carter is a selfish ball hog, with sometimes atrocious judgment, and that Christian has no idea how to control/coach him. Just my humble 2 cents.

I think Carter's difficulties stem from not being a true point guard and having to run a weave offense that can be stopped by double teaming the point.

He doesn't seem to feel open enough to make secure passes to his team mates on the perimeter, so he dribbles way too much and has been unable to finish in amongst the "BIGS".

He is also obviously fatigued. I think Robinson took enough pressure away form Carter to make Carter more effective.
