Reading into the Devan Lawson decommitment

New York TE/DE Devan Lawson had this to say on Twitter.
Fortunately there are few (if any) BC fans overreacting to this news. Lawson seems like a diamond in the rough type and I trust the staff, but this is not a big loss. In fact losing him now hints at bigger issues.

Because BC cannot publicly discuss recruits, we are left to guess what happened or wait for the gossip to trickle out. Usually when a guy decommits, it means another school has entered the picture. That doesn't seem to be the case with Lawson. Since committing to BC, new teams have offered, but no Power 5s. If you believe the gossip, the staff started questioning Lawson's character and academic discipline.

Although he decommitted, I don't expect BC to swing Lawson back. That rarely happens. And although there will be exceptions, Addazio is big on moving on once a recruit starts looking flighty. I am sure we will have a new TE/DE type soon.

I think this was more a space issue than a character issue, meaning he was just recruited over by Patrick Brown. Im sure they offered him his spot, but perhaps hinted at a position change (or maybe suggested moving on), which caused him to rethink things. He will not be recommitting to Boston College (believe he is visiting UMass tomorrow and holds Buffalo/Army offers).

FWIW, I think Lawson has a number of redeemable traits, he has really good size and is very athletic (but a project), however, Brown is a more complete, traditional TE recruit. I question if BC will even take another TE this cycle, I get the impression that they only planned on taking 1, thus Lawson rethinking things.

"If you build it, they will come" Field of Dreams. If Daz "pulls a rabbit out of hat", then more power to him. With a thirteen million dollar (2.6 x 5) commitment, you have to hope and pray. Yesterday, ESPN Classics had the 2007 Champs Bowl with Michigan State (24-21) and everything looked rosy. There was little talent on a team that Matt Ryan carried, Coach Jags prodded, Mark Herzlich tackled, and Rich Gunnell caught. That is where this entire mess started. Jags pulled "the rabbit out of the hat" and it died.

Lots of cut and paste comments by the usual suspects. Guess it saves time thinking.

Good info Kash. Thanks.

Mod writes "pretending that an inability to hold onto a MAC player by an ACC team is s plus." Another example of "anything daz does is BAD!"

We got a TE commit from upstate NY. we then got a BETTER TE commit from a catholic school in CA - this is inarguably a good thing. lesser TE commit then decides he'll look elsewhere. so be it - we have replaced him with not only a better player but one from an important region we need to start leveraging. Mod then concludes this chain of events is a net negative because ... DAZ SuX!

i'll take the upgrade from the #1 football state in the country with better offers.

i've said it before i'll say it again - Daz leaves plenty to be desired on the sidelines and off, but there for all his warts he does do a good thing every now and then. the appropriate reaction to every move is not belly aching about how we are doomed.

The guy left. If he doesn't want to attend Boston College then he can fuck off. Why spend 5 seconds talking about him?

The school hasn't had a decent TE since the kid that plays(played) for the Jets who lives with his parent and the Jet punter, Quigley.

This douchebag is not going to make a difference. It is not systemic or indicative of anything. People move on. It is what it is.

Addazio is not a very good coach and he hasn't represented the University well on the field. Losing this TE recruit will have no impact on the program, however.

Pantale.

Well said Knucklehead...who cares? People act like Jimmy Graham just de-committed..Losing this TE will be the least of their concerns come next fall...good luck to him, he just passed up a pretty awesome opportunity....

I understand mod but this happens all the time even to the power schools..Notre Dame has recruits de-commit, USC has recruits de-commit, etc, etc...it happens all the time to every school..I don't think it's a sign of some bigger problem...

Wow!! Back from an extensive grueling business trip only to find that Mr. Negative is even worse than ever. How does he do it? M34, please help us eternal optimists learn how to temper it. Of course, I really don't mean to be as bad as you but Some of us need to step back and maybe be a little less happy and bubbly about what might be. Tell us Mod how do you do it? medication(or lack thereof? meditation? What?

I hear ya Mod but it's still better than 3-9 overall and 0-8 in ACC yeah? Doesn't 6-6 make us bowl eligible? I think we need to be realistic with our expectations for next year. Are they going to right the disaster of this past season and go 12-0 next year? I doubt it but 6-6 or maybe they pull off a 7-5 year then I believe that following year things will be even better as all these frosh from the past season will then be juniors with quite a bit of experience! The glass is half full Mod, let's stay positive!!!
