Big ratings for BC's bowl

The biggest sky is falling BC fan often worry about "the ACC kicking BC out of the conference." Even when BC looks inept, that won't happen. Why? Because of television. Look at what a 6-6 BC and 6-6 Maryland team did on a Monday afternoon after Christmas.

BC can't take credit for this alone. Maryland has a good TV footprint too (hence why they are in the Big Ten). BC also can't sit on their media market and not try to improve on the field and in marketing within Boston. Imagine what the ratings would be if BC was great and had a rabid following in the Boston area.

isn't it the mutual grant of rights that protects BC from "eviction" from ACC until 2036?

Imagine how popular BC would be on the east coast if they were a top 25 team. The average football fan is tired of the thug football factories and look to BC as a nostalgic breath of fresh air when schools actually had real student-athletes. In other words, nationally, we are perceived as the good guys.

As "The Three Stooges" who run the NCAA would respond to the sleight by "Georgia Eagle" in regard to "thug football factories", I resemble that remark. According to the Detroit Free Press of 12.26.16, the "announced attendance" was 19,117. They then said that the actual attendance was below 10,000. This was echoed by "Forbes" on line of 12.27.16. Forbes went on to say that bowl payouts for 2015 were 505.9 million with a net of 405.7 mill after expenses. In 2015, Detroit had 34,217. In 2007, it was 60,624. In 2002, BC was in the inaugural with 45,761 viewing the action.

A lot of these bowls look pretty empty. Detroit was probably the worst, though.

Geezer eagle said...

BC rarely travels well during bowl season. The good ratings applied to TV audience. Considering the time slot, BC had a decent audience.

ccw said...

Georgia, nobody other than BC fans thinks about our football program much less think about us as "good guys".

Geezer eagle said...

I have lived in Georgia for 21 years. Trust me, I get lots of positive pro BC comments.

Attendance was pathetic in part because anyone traveling by air would probably have had to spend Christmas in Detroit. Fine, if you have family in the area, but otherwise, not so much. I wonder if attendance would have been a little better if the game was on the 27th or 28th? We know that for most bowl games, it's the TV ratings that matter, not the gate. As John said, attendance has been poor at many games. Hawaii had a home game for a bowl game and it was poorly attended.

Obviously, we played a very weak schedule. That said, both of our conference wins were against teams that went to minor bowl games and we did, of course, win our bowl game. Kudos to the seniors for not packing it in.

Year 5 of the Daz era is coming. Put up or shut up, Daz.

Not bad considering it was a fight over a participation trophy. According to many prognosticators, Anthony Brown is the next great QB to play at Boston College. One thing that has disappointed me about the school itself of late is that it's becoming very left wing progressive leaning; NOT what a Catholic School should be. Hope I'm wrong but I've been seeing a very left wing leaning crowd on campus, not something a Catholic School should be advocating. Not saying they should be affiliated with any specific political side however left wing is the furthest away from what Catholics believe.

Geezer eagle said...

I hear ya, Chris. Left wing orthodoxy is becoming the norm on our college campuses. Sad and disturbing. Football is supposed to be a nice destraction to this PC, leftist BS.

Bravesbill said...

Wow, the BC game beat the ratings of reruns of Duck Dynasty and Fixer Upper. Seriously, what's on tv on December 26? That's nothing to be proud of. As for the P18-49 ratings though which is what advertisers rely on, BC got smashed by the WWE, Street Outlaws, and a show called Leave It to Stevie. Sounds like a bunch of old timers tuned into the game.

knucklehead said...

Who are the prognosticators?

Boston College, founded by and currently leaning Irish Catholic, has always been a Democrat and liberal leaning student body(not Berkley/Columbia/Weslyan in terms of having public protests)because of the Jesuit influence and Union background of the families that sent their children there for college(teachers, nurses, officers). Most of the BC graduates who have gone into politics are Democrats/Blue Dog type: Tip O'Neill/Governor Malloy/Mike Rawlings/Marty Walsh).

The assholes holding protests on campus now are not undergrads they are "graduate" students who are essentially professional students with nothing really to do except bitch and run up student loan debt.

I don't consider them representative of Boston College.

Bravesbill said...

Chris, to echo Knuckle somewhat, BC has always been pretty liberal due to its Jesuit influence. Isn't the running joke these days that most Jesuit universities like Georgetown, shouldn't be called Catholic at all?

mod34b said...

pope => jesuit => uber liberal =>BC but there is no "liberal" chemistry or "liberal" accounting etc.

so, like many generations of Eagles, we all got a good education despite some loony aspects of jesuits

Geezer eagle said...

Mod, in my day, BC produced garden variety liberal Democrats( minus moi). But now the campus is hard to distinguish from Harvard or Berkeley. Scary for the future.

Big Jack Krack said...

This is an interesting thread for me - as I am older than most who comment here. My uncle (who I am named after) was a Jesuit Priest who headed the Philosophy Department at Holy Cross. He was quite an athlete in his day, and his fellow Jesuits were tough guys in my mind, who would visit your house, eat two lobsters, drink as much as your father, challenge you to a debate, and later, as the booze began to take its toll, challenge you to a fight.

They were liberal in that they encouraged you to study and seek the truth (your understanding of the truth) - and if it brought you someplace other than strict Baltimore Catechism Catholicism, so be it.

Anyway - very briefly, we were all Democrats in my family, but were not "liberal" in my understanding of the term. In fact to this day I consider myself to be conservative but not Republican conservative. And BC was not "liberal" when I was there.

I remember when the Vietnam War was really becoming (even more of) a major issue and Sen. Hubert Humphrey was going to speak on campus. Many protesters showed up and there was a heavy Boston Police presence, including the mounted patrol - and we students showed up shouting "get off our campus; get off our campus" near the old Roberts Center.

We weren't "liberal", although most of us realized the utter folly and heartbreak of the war. And if some of us have become socially liberal as we have gotten older, it doesn't mean we have lost our conservative core. We were from "working class" families and many of us worked to pay our own tuition. We didn't have time for lofty thoughts. :-)

What did I do in 1968 as a new graduate with a B.S in Finance? I joined the Army Infantry and became a 2nd Lieutenant upon graduation from Ft. Benning OCS. (And got very lucky after my stateside assignment by being sent to Korea along with half of my OCS Company, instead of Vietnam in 1970 - we still had 79,000 troops in ROK then.) The luck of the draw, pure and simple, when other classmates were not lucky at all.

Happy New Year all, BC Liberals and Conservatives - and let's hope our alma mater can wake up and become competitive again. And if that means that the conservatives have to shame the liberal administrators into doing what is required - then so be it.

Go BC - Ever to Excel. Start living it!

Big Jack Krack said...

I had one glass of wine - sorry for the drivel.

Geezer eagle said...

Big Jack, my fellow army officer. You are one of the few liberal Democrats I can admire and respect. Unlike most people on the Left, you have walked the walk. Just wish I could get you out of your liberal bubble world.
Happy New Year, sir.

knucklehead said...

Fiscally liberal not Socially liberal. High taxes, high minimum wage, longer term unemployment compensation, Union/worker rights. Against abortion, kids no marriage, death penalty etc.

Bluedog democrat like I said. Odd the southern reps here don't know what that means.

Big Jack Krack said...

Not that liberal, GAEagle, and I salute you. Thanks for your service. :-)

Go BC; Go ACC; GO FSU tonight, even if it means burning Don Brown. It looks like a sell out in the Orange Bowl.

Too bad UNC and Pittsburgh couldn't pull off their games.

Geezer eagle said...

Jack, FSU is running over Brown's defense like butter. What are they going to do to us next year? Perish the thought.

Bravesbill said...

A little of that has to do with Peppers being out at the last minute. Brown basically had to throw the playbook out and adapt. He hasn't been bringing much pressure as a result which has hurt.

Geezer eagle said...

One man makes this dramatic a difference? Highly unlikely. Michagen is simply overmatched.

Bravesbill said...

I only said a little of that has to due with Peppers being out. They haven't been nearly as aggressive and Cook and company have killed Michigan on passes out of the backfield and over the middle.

Geezer eagle said...

True.

CT said...

Anyone who argues for high or higher taxes has never worked for the government.

Happy New Year.

Geezer eagle said...

Democrats love big government. Obama the community organizer, surrounded himself with career politicians and academic egg-heads. Trump the business man, on the other hand, is building an all-star cast of business and military men. America's road to recovery has begun.

STL_eagle said...

So far ACC holding its own in the bowl games. Too bad NC did not pull off win against Stanford...a Pac 10 victory would have been nice. Nice not to hear complaints about BC pulling down the conference. Even though it was against lowly Maryland still counts as Power Five and win against Big 10. FSU win would be huge for conference and we still have Clemson and Louisville in the mix. All in all could be a banner year for ACC football.

John said...

Huge mistake by FSU QB.

John said...

This game is far from over, and Michigan has the momentum.

Geezer eagle said...

Yes it was. FSU has completely outplayed MU. But wouldn't be ironic if MU scratchrs-out the win?

John said...

Oh boy.

mod34b said...

jack - great post - this line has to go in the book you've been thinking of writing

"Jesuits were tough guys in my mind, who would visit your house, eat two lobsters, drink as much as your father, challenge you to a debate, and later, as the booze began to take its toll, challenge you to a fight."

hysterical. i believe this must have been the guiding life philosophy of notorious Ed "fast eddie' Hanrahan, SJ.

John said...

Unbelievable how this could happen. Michigan still has a chance, as FSU let down on the P.A.T.

John said...

Yes, we all remember Fr. Hanrahan S.J.

luch said...

regarding the comments earlier about BC and liberal vs conservative : I think that is what makes BC special... If I wanted to go to a conservative catholic school I would have gone to Notre Dame. And hated it. I grew up Catholic. Catholic schools since kindergarten. So i know the drill. I loved BC and how the jesuits encouraged you to question things as well as the desire for social justice. For me thats how its liberal. Love the words "seek your truth." I agree with that wholeheartedly and am so grateful that I wasn't just taught one way or the highway like a place like ND would.

Geezer eagle said...

Taught one way or the highway? Yea. Strictly the liberal highway. Name me one conservative professor you had in four years at BC? If you can, I'm quite certain you can also name 9 lefties. As for ND, when was the last time they invited a conservative commencement speaker? Your above comments are absurd, dude.

Knucklehead said...

Father Hanrahan wasn't drinking and fighting. He was a "narc" who broke up parties and fights.

mod34b said...

GE - I never knew - or even thought about - the politics of my professors when I was a student. No one was concerned with that....but BC and the world of college seems to be awash in the politics of political identity now.

The most political thing I recall is that in early 1980s, Geo Bush 1 (GB1 daughter Dot was a student) was the commencement speaker, and many students turned their back on him (disgraceful). probably was some group of losers from the radio station, student gov and the student paper.... most other students were more concerned about hiding he flask of whiskey under their gowns..

I think most BC student today and yesterday are center to center right... and have a nice capacity to resist the propaganda from the leftist profs seeking tenure (regurgitate the propaganda in your finals to get a good grade and then flush it).

mod34b said...

knuckle -

seriously Father H wasn't drinking???

stick to what you know about

Geezer eagle said...

Center right, Mod? Seriously doubt it. Wonder how many students and recent graduates have ever voted (if they vote) Republican? Miniscule, I'm certain. (Especially liberal arts majors.) It takes years of "real world" exposure for some college educated American s to drift conservative.

Bravesbill said...

There were a ton of students who protested Condi as the commencement speaker...and that was 10 years ago. Most BC students are from the Northeast so I'd expect their politics to reflect that.

Max said...

If you think Father Hanrahan did not/would not/never had a drink - ask for a refund of your tuition because it is 4 years of college shot to hell.

He was one of the reasons BC was a great place to go to school
Others- sitting in Campenellas office explaining 3 suitcases of Bud. My excuse was NY drinking age was 18. He proceeded to give me an education on "ignorance" of the law is no excuse. He kept the beer.
Father Barret who knew everything you and said did even in a class of 200.
Dean Cronin who bought me pants because he didn't want me to walk by his window in sweats "one more day"

JBQ said...

Very interesting political conversation from a "bilge" perspective of a Navy vet. With a Jesuit pope with views far to the left of Attila the Nun, just what do you expect a Jesuit university to say? They want a football program to reflect an inclusive philosophy. There is no room for a "mad hatter" any longer, whether it be Father Hanrahan or Matt Ryan or even Donald Trump. The Dazzler is upholding a liberal Jesuit philosophy. It doesn't matter if they win. Actually if they keep losing, they could end up in the Patriot League with Holy Cross. Maybe it would have been better if they beat Holy Cross in 1942 and the team went to the Coconut Grove. What has happened of late has been a front row view of a "slow burning dumpster fire" which will shortly conflagrate unless an asbestos suited magician like TC is brought in to hose out the garbage.

Geezer eagle said...

B or better Barret? Brings back memories. And Hanrahan was the Dean when I was there. Is he still alive?

Max said...

JBQ - some lines should not be crossed. Coconut Grove is one. A tragedy that should not be used for these purposes. May they Rest In Peace.

John said...

GA Tech nice win for another ACC victory over the SEC.

Louisville looked awful, but LSU is tough defensively.

mod34b said...

BB. The northeast gives all its electoral votes to Dems, but it is not monolithicly Dem. look at Nj this election. hill got 55% of vote but only won 12 counties and trump won 10. Big big urban votes for Dems. Places BC students come from are more often than not Trump country. E.g. Parent with substantial income.

CT said...

Louisville has never seen a defense like LSU's. And LSU is not great at all.

Recruit the south.

CT said...

The Heisman winner was shit. Playing a real defense does that. BC could only hope.

Hey, Don Brown just cashed in.

Bravesbill said...

Can't really fault Jackson. Dude had zero time to pass or run. Terrible line.

Knucklehead said...

Ha. You are literally in lala land.

The guy was a narc with moles among the students. He always appeared at parties when things were getting interesting.

Was he drinking with the students? Nope.

You douchebags make it sound like he was cranking BL smoothies with the kids.

Clowns.

I remember years ago when a couple of basketball players decided not to go home for Thanksgiving, and hang around and practice.

On Friday night they were squirreled away in their dorm room, sharing a 6-pack, only to be caught red-handed by you know who.

For their sacrifice to hng around campus, they were suspended from the team for 2 weeks, among other disciplinary measures.

Fr. Hanrahan was tough!!! :-) And if you were an athlete, tough sh#$.

I am utterly sick of you close-minded left and right wingers turning a sports blog into a political rant. The election is over and there are plenty of other places to spout your close-minded thinking. This country would be so much better if the moderates were in control as we actually LISTEN to both sides. All liberals and conservatives do is label and denigrate each other. It is despicable and selfish behavior and it is why our country is so divided. It is OK to discuss and debate ideas, but to name-call and denigrate is low-level thinking. BC grads should be better than that.

By the way, both ideologies are 20th century failures. We need new, outside-the-box, creative ideas to move forward. We tried both extremes and they flat-out don't work.

Max said...

Maybe we could start with not using "outside the box thinking" in blog posts. What's next! 24/7? Power through? Gosh the 20tj century was so limited in its creative, move forward ideas. How did we ever survive?

mod34b said...

eb - u do realize that the the moderates are just naohter grioup on the political spectrum just like the conservatives and libs you condemn.

So in your enlightened mind, liberal and conservatives are 'closed minded' but moderates are open-minded.

really?

How about electability and effectiveness? moderates stand for very little

Moderates are people like Jeb Bush, Charlie Baker, Charlie Crist, John Kasich, Paul Ryan (sort of) and Mitt Romney. In other words, useless.

ps I did not see anyone denigrating anyone on this thread?
