BC looks terrible in loss to Wake

Sometimes I try to come up with some newspaper/magazine type headline for the lead of these posts, but today I want to keep it simple. BC looked really, really bad in their loss to Wake. And the season is looking really, really scary. Once again Addazio has dug himself into a huge hole with regards to his offense and his win-loss record. I don't trust him to turn it around. Which means this could be the beginning of the end.

As for the game, after showing promise last week, Brown missed wide open WRs all day. When he wasn't missing them, they were dropping balls or letting them bounce into the hands of Wake DBs. The OLine was a mess too. The once proud D had its moments, but ultimately allowed too many big plays.

I am frustrated, but I actually have hope. Either Addazio turns things around and we pull off an upset or two (unlikely) or we peter out and he is replaced by someone who might help BC get back to being BC.

Below is my post-game Periscope. Thanks to all those who participated. I will have second viewing thoughts and grades up late Sunday night.

Bad coaches can get BC to bowl games. Imagine what a good one can do.

ATL, let's hope we get an answer to your question next year.

STL_eagle said...

With a new AD ready to put his stamp on the program, the only hope for Daz staying is 7-5 or better. This loss will make it very difficult to achieve that mark with ranked opponents like Clemson, FSU, Virginia Tech, Louisville and ND on the horizon. Winning these first two games was pretty much make or break for Daz...looks like "break" it is. Hopefully the team can pull off some additional wins to build momentum for the new coach next year and help BC hold onto some of their top recruits.

Completely demoralizing. The man must go.

JBQ said...

The bottom line is that BC because of BB is "on the hook" for three years at 7.5 Mil.

CT said...

ATL, I agree. There are 40 bowls.

BaldEagle90 said...

Wait He has three more years of contract?!?? Oh crap. We'll never get a buy out. Otherwise he is easily done.

STL_eagle said...

I am quite sure that Jarmond asked for and received assurances that he could drop Daz after this year if the team did not meet certain expectations. Given the performance against Wake, and the remaining schedule, it is very likely that we will be seeing a new coach. The big question is when will BC make the call. My guess is that they will wait until the day after the Syracuse game to create the least amount of disruption but if BC falls to UConn then getting a jump start on the search would seem to make sense.

No real reason to dump Daz now. Our next coach is fully employed now and not quitting mid season.

6 teams will throttle BC : nd, fsu, clem, lv, by and NCSU

The season is lost.

I watched NCSu. They are way better than BC

We can beat Yukon and cent Michigan. Maybe Virginia.

Looking at 3-9. Or 4-8.

Time to do something on Saturdays than watch misery unfold in 4 quarters

7.5 million for a high school coach. All Day has to do is show up and the School will keep him for the next three years. Big problem is they've had two average high shcool coaches and have no idea how to hire a good coach. So only way to go is to hold tight and see the interest diminished. Perhaps then it might be easier to drop the sport.

I thought 8-4, now I think 3-9. I guess the Don Brown effect has finally worn off. I was at the game, there was no emotion on the defense. They acted like they were just going through the motions. Addazio is the Jeff Fisher of college football. His career record falls to 38-39.

Unknown said...

Addazio is now 1-25 when trailing at halftime.

Unknown said...

First they were getting blown out by top 10 teams, now they're getting blown out by everyone.

TheFive said...

Unless we go winless in conference -- certainly possible after today -- there is zero chance we fire Daz.

Jaramond seems like a good guy with vision. If you think he has been given the power to fire Daz w/ 3 years left on his contract...you've not paid much attention to the Leahy era.

Geezer eagle said...

Chris, you are an ass. How could you have possibly rated this band of Patriot League losers an 8 win team and now change your mind. You simply don't know what the hell you are talking about.

Unknown said...

The definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different
outcome. We may over power CM and UConn and this is after 5 years.
Christian should be on notice 7 ACC wins or else.
Even two of the best announcers doing college football Meta and Pete cant dull the
horrible pain.
Who approved BB's horrible extension for Dazzless?
WE have become a football TRAVESTY. Is there a conspiracy to destroy Father Monan's
excellent athletic work and reduce us to the Cross level?

Goodbye Addazio ... You have generally sucked and I look forward to you no longer representing BC.

This was a total beating in every facet of the game. Bright spots: kicking game, Michael walker on returns and as receiver, and AJ Dillon -- that 's it folks! I took my 6 month old granddaughter to her first BC game--cruel and unusual punishment--I hope she forgives me.

ToTheHeights said...

And by the way, this was a pick em which means Vegas would not provide points for either team for the belief both teams
were even ... one would believe BC had the advantage given the away win at the end of last season... and yet Wake won by 24 ... which is more than embarrassing .... good riddance Addazio

So glad I went to the zoo and watched animals fling poop around than watch that.

I still think Brown has potential, but frosh are raw, and he's going to have those moments...

JBQ said...

A slight note of warning about Central Michigan. They opened with an overtime win (yawn) over Rhode Island and today won at Kansas by 18. At Syracuse is next week. They could end up even being a threat to a BC team coming off games with ND and at Clemson.

JBQ said...

@Deacon Drake: Are you sure that you weren't watching the game? The description fits.

Knucklehead said...

The QB was poor today. The line sucks. It is pathetic that a school with our history of o-line play with head coach who was a offensive line focused coach at Florida when they won a national championship has not had a decent line in 4 years.

When the center snapped the ball 30 yards down field I left.

Pathetic.

John said...

How many BC Offensive Linemen went to the pros from Tom O'Brien teams?

Boy, we're we spoiled!

Will we ever get back there?

Knucklehead said...

The fraud("jags") and the asshole(spaz) had plenty go pro as well.

Dazzler wont hire an o-line coach because he is enamoured with Frye.

My first criteria for the next head coach is that he doesn't have a stupid Nick name. Jags, Spaz and Daz. More, Larry and Curly. Not in that order.

John said...

ND loses tough game to UGA.

We'll shock them next week. 🙂

eagleboston said...

Not only did TOB produce NFL linemen, he also put 4 quarterbacks in the NFL (both the Hasselbecks, St. Pierre and Ryan). Addazio can't find ACC level aqs let alone NFL

Geezer eagle said...

John/JBQ, get real. Enough of the foolish optimism. This team and it's head coach truly sucks.

Unfortunately it's not a matter of optimism or pessimism - its reality. First, we simply do not have the depth of talent to compete in the ACC. Sure, there are a few bright spots. But line up our team against nearly every other ACC team and we fall way short. Second, our HC is simply out of his depth for the rebuild job that was required here. It's going to take a long time to fix even if we find a great coach. Nobody except BC allows things to be so bad for so long. I hope Jarmond knows what he is doing.

eagle1331 said...

If we get blown out by Notre Dame next week on National Television there is absolutely no reason that the head coach should remain in his role through kick off of the NFL slate next Sunday.

TheFive said...

It used to be true that good coaches could win at BC...as could even mediocre coaches. TOB and Jags demonstrated as much.

But the college football world has changed in BC's decade of irrelevance. It's not at all clear that the school wants to be competitive; we have been nothing more than ambivalent for 10 years while pocketing, and not reinvesting, the ACC money. All of our competitors have done the opposite. Also we have 4 perennial top 25 teams on our conf schedule each year (FSU, Clem, Lou, VaTech), with whom we have not been competitive routinely.

Can a good coach win here? We need more than a good coach; we need institutional commitment. At present, we have neither. Hiring a high energy AD with a personality and something to prove is a step in the right direction. But BC generally and Leahy in particular should be viewed with deep skepticism until the facts prove otherwise.

We hired a thirty-something first time AD with no BC experience. That's exactly what I'd do if I wanted a cheap contract and an AD I could control. One person calls the shots on everything at BC; his name is not Jaramond.

I seriously considered getting season tickets again this year after a multi-year hiatus, based on some hope coming off last year, recruiting and outreach by the Athletics Dept. In the end, I decided to take a "wait and see" approach, and am now glad I did so. Even considered, albeit briefly, getting back into contributing to BC Athletics based on outreach by the new AD. Again, glad I held on to my money. While ESPN streaming isn't/wasm't great, guess it matches the quality of our team.

NEDofSavinHill said...

If Daz goes BC should not consider anyone from the Ohio State staff. Schiano is terrible. A 50% winning percentage at Rutgers. A total failure in the pros. In the last two games OSU played against ranked opponents they were blown out. The D surrendered 31 to Clemson and to Oklahoma. The Buckeyes purportedly have the top D line in the country. He stinks as badly as Daz. Herbsterit is on suicide watch. Chip Kelly is a New England guy and a proven winner.

BC fan since the 1960s said...

They are headed for horrific, embarrassing, one-sided losses to Clemson, FSU, Virginia Tech, Louisville and ND. Might say the same for NC State. They should stick with the redshirt freshman at QB. Made a big mistake last year not letting him play as a true freshman vs. taking a fifth year senior transfer to play QB just to go 6-6 and suffer lopsided losses to the good teams they played. If they let the kid play last year, he likely would be better in 2017 than what we have seen. But that is the problem when the coach is trying to do something in the short term to save his job vs. what might be best for the long term. They have major problems beyond QB, however, as recruiting has been obviously sub-par. I would dismiss the coach now, let one of the coordinators finish out the year as the interim HC (could they do any worse?), and this action will put the coaching world on notice that this position is open and we will be looking to fill it as soon as the last game is played in November.

Agree. BTW - Syracuse lost to Middle Tennessee at home.

Virginia lost to Indiana 34 to 17 at home.

My bad I meant football

Matt said...

Another thought. I heard the tail gating is no more. Lousy coaches, lousy teams, fan interest sinking, television coverage minimal unless other team is good = ever hear Leahy talk. Has no concern for football. He's all academics. He'll not pay 7.5 to buy out coach. So suck it up for next 3 years. BC gets ACC money whether wins or loses.

JBQ said...

@Napoleon: Your comment is way beyond commendable. "Lack of depth" and "out of depth" about says all that needs to be said.

Unknown said...

Did Boston College go into the ACC to become an elite college football program? If so, then they need to fire Addazio and hire an elite coach (Chip Kelly). If BC isn't willing to take the football program seriously then move out of the ACC and into the MAC or AAC (Garbage that was left of the dismantled Big East). Chip Kelly would instantly reignite the rivalry with Notre Dame and make the ACC as a conference even stronger and more profitable. It's really a no brainer, since Chip has expressed interest in the past.

Unknown said...

@MAtt- If BC could hire Chip Kelly, the school would get an instant return on its investment. National TV coverage pays the ACC more which adds more revenue to BC's bottom line, sell outs, more memorabilia and fan base excitement. Chip Kelly would turn BC into an elite program as elite recruits would be attracted.

Donors would return in droves.

Hate to say it, but we need to stop with the calls for Chip Kelly. As long as Fr. Leahy is president, it won't happen. Too big an ego, too big a presence, and will want too much $$$ to come for maybe 3 yrs and move on to a bigger program or NFL.

Ryan Day is the closest we will get.

JBQ said...

@Chris: You make a good point. There has to be something going on behind the scenes to take BC out of the "win at any cost" scenario. The string of ADs has been absolutely terrible since Gladchuk stubbed his toe.----Something sure doesn't smell right. John Fish is the outgoing chair of the board. He runs Suffolk Construction which is ranked in the top 200 businesses on Fortune. He would not let this go on. So, why was he not allowed to step in and offer economic advice?---TC is a renowned football mind. He was not even consulted. ND brings in a lawyer to run their program. BC brings in a kid who played some basketball at UNC Wilmington and whose only football experience is submitting possible schedules to Urban Meyer for his approval.---In the words of Clint Eastwood in "Heartbreak Ridge", this is a "cluster f--k".

John said...

ND game changed to 3:30pm.

A real opportunity for our freshmen to shine in Year 5 of the Addazio rebuild plan.🙂

Good luck guys - I wish you the best.

Note to BC Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator. Do not dumb down the offense any more because Baker got hurt; and don't run #32 up the middle. Also, consider giving some receivers who can catch the ball a chance.

Mr. Brown - you have been exposed as a new QB who will make mistakes - big deal.

Use it to your advantage. No pressure - expectations are low - come out smoking and go for it.

Play college football and throw off Loeffler's shackles.

You are just as good athletically as they are.

John fish made his money by screwing subcontractors and his relationship with manino. He was put as head of the board in order for bc to get the necessary building permits for the construction the past 7 years in campus. He's a very successful businessman but incredibly ruthless. Don't expect him to care about bc football, he had no ties.

But how weak is adazzios characterization of yesterday's embarrassing home loss as "close" cuz the total yards were like 309 to 305? They keep the score on the big board with all the lights, Stevie. You lost by 3 plus TDs up there. #notclose

Daz is out of his depth. Will ATL come around? Beating ND these days is no longer a program-booster. Beating Louisville would be. Daz v Petrino? Advantage: The third circle of hell.
