Looking at BC's strength of schedule

Now that BC is winning, many are trying to figure out what happened during the losses. Even before the UVA win, Addazio was quick to point out how good the teams we lost to actually were. Notre Dame looks playoff bound. Clemson is the defending champion. Virginia Tech is ranked. Even Wake has a winning record. Also consider BC didn't play a FCS team. Does that justify the losing? In my opinion, no. Especially the ultra-conservative approach and the blowouts.  But I am biased. So is Addazio. The computer rankings are not.

Based on the most-popular strength of schedule formula, BC has had the 10th most difficult slate so far this season.  As a point of comparison, the very disappointing and injury-plagued Florida State has had the most difficult schedule this season.

As the season concludes, the SOS rating will take a bit of a hit (thanks to UConn), but this has been a challenging slate. I am sure that the SOS will be used to evaluate Addazio by Jarmond and others. Let's hope that BC wins enough that the schedule is not used as another reason to justify losing.

ATL -- would love your take, in light of the fact that you re-watch every game, on whether the offensive approach has changed over the last few games. I'm not sure much has changed other than execution (particularly on the OLine) and the respect defenses are paying to AJ Dillon. These look like the same plays to me (aside from the 2d half against VaTech, which involved an inexplicably high number of 1st and 2d down inside handoffs). What do you think? Is it a different approach or just better execution?

Mod34b here!

Thanks for the nice welcome back comments the other day. I really enjoyed the UVA beat down.

Except the mod34b the other day was not me. It was the loser imposter once again. I've been reading game day comments all along, just not commenting myself. Lots of good comments made!

That loser imposter is knucklehead. He is the guy who posted right before fake mod34.

I've created an authentication system. I've attached a clip of my log-in profile here. If you click on my name you'll see the same thing - Joined Dec 2007 and at least 636 views (number will grow not shrink). I know there will not be too many authenticators! Ha! But just a little insurance if Knucklehead resorts to dick-mode again (inevitable)

TheFive, I think we're targeting our TEs a lot more recently. We've done it with play actions, and roll outs. Just a quick look at stats, Sweeney has 4 receptions each in the last 2 games. He had 11 total receptions in the previous 6 games (1.8/game). Obviously, I'm not looking at total targets, but at the very least Sweeney is coming down with twice as many receptions a game.

The play design has improved as well. I saw one roll out where the WR ran what looked like a fly route, while the slot receiver and TE both ran stacked flag routes. This all combined to clear out the area, while the weak side TE ran a perfect drag route across the field and was wide open in the recently vacated area. Earlier in the season, each receiver seemed to be on his own to beat his defender and get open. Now we're seeing plays designed to create space and attack schemes.

Execution has definitely improved. But I think its easier to execute well when you're running plays that make execution easier (cutting down the field via roll outs, receivers running off defenders and back-filling the space, etc,).

One thing i've noticed on the big plays the past two games is excellent downfield blocking by receivers. For being a former scrawny QB, Jeff Smith does some fantastic work downfield. He blocked two guys each on both of our long TDs against UVA.

Mod34, Knucklehead has a new whipping boy in Section D. Maybe he will give you a break this time.
In any event, welcome back. We need your football knowledge and insight.

I am not now ,nor will I ever be a fan of this bombastic loudmouth (Addazio). That said , I must give credit to the total change in the offensive play calling .It is unpredictable and creative. Maybe Addazio finally realized that his job was on the line and gave Loeffler freedom to open up the offense. The staff have gone to that bruising back - A.J. Dillon over Hilliman whose play has been mediocre till recently. I will not bore you with the changes , since watching the recent games makes my comments self evident. If BC stays aggressive on defense and remain unpredictable on offensive play calling , they actually can win the remaining 4 games. Florida State is a shell of its former self with a TRUE FRESHMAN play caller. If BC wins Friday , watch out !!!! I know that my following comment is really awful ,but I must say it . I am happy for the kids and BC, but I can not imagine having this "Blowhard" coaching another 2 - 3 years at the "Heights".

Well, if the REAL Mod is back...me too. See above for a half hour of Jimbo Fla State coaching philosophy and a couple of BC references (~ 13:15 and ~ 28.30 ).

Last week was the first time in 10 years that I really gave a hoot ...kids played hard and the COACHING finally gave the kids what they deserved.

We must assume that FSU will show up with the mindset that they will play their best game of the year and that they will (try to) blow us out.

The fact that they are frustrated and so forth should be more of a warning to us than something to celebrate.

Be ready, BC - and punch THEM in the mouth.

Treat them as the bully, and back them right down by standing up to them and shocking them with some nice body shots.

And if we can get ahead in the first half, DO NOT TAKE THE FOOT OFF THE GAS - please.

If any one has not heard the adazzio radio show this week your missing out. Daz was his usual fraud self. He stopped so low as to throw shade at don brown. He claimed the system put up great numbers but gave up 6 plays a game that was the main reason they lost. Lmaoooo clown he said defense is looking better finnsly now because we moved on from the man to man pressure defense and it took the players time to adjust to new system!!!!!!!! Hasn't don been gone almost 1 and 1/2 seasons??????? They real treat of the show was the guests. The ever classy Herzy and godser cherilus. I know I'm spelling that wrong but he was amazing on that show. He talk about his time on campus and the pride he takes in being a bc alum. It got me so pumped!!!! Our online was so nasty for so many years. It was a treat to hear I'm sure every bc fan over 25 will love it.

Strength of schedule is a decent stat to look at for comparing to other programs, but it is flawed. While I don't know what the formula is, the results of our games with the opponents affects the stat. The opponents would have a worst W-L record if we had beaten them, factoring into the perceived strength. The Top-25 human poll rankings would be lower on ND,VT, or Clemson, if we had beaten them. So just by playing a game and losing, BC heightens their strength of schedule.

It gives perspective on history not a predictor if the future.

The topic also comes straight from the knucklehead comment line the day before. Which is typical.

Awesome interview. Gos is the man. We need more young kids like him and has classmates. I love the shot he took at Jags ...

I love the story about him throwing the computer programmer down the bar, greatest bar.

Dejuan Tribble was a really good corner.

During the interview after the game, Daz and AB (qb) talked of celebrating a dinner at The Stockyards. Who pays for the victory dinner? They ate last week at some place called Mangione's.

BCAlum2000 said...

Maggianos. And its part of the athletics budget I would think.

JBQ said...

@BCAlum2000: So, Are they good places to eat? I would like to know in view of a future visit to Boston when in the view of "Anne Marie", the echoes ring again.

BCAlum2000 said...

Maggianos is good, yes. Italian. Right next to Park Plaza Hotel.

JBQ said...

@BCAlum2000: Maybe one of these fine days, all of those on this website could meet at Maggianos. There could be some type of celebration at the Park Plaza with a package deal. Anne Marie could bring her family and sing "For Boston". Just a thought. It could be dedicated to the memory of Father D. Monan who died in March at 92.
