Boring but bowl bound

BC came out flat, but in the end it did not matter. BC trounced UConn at Fenway. Dillon made up for Wade's uneven performance. Hilliman also had his best game of the season. After a rough start, the D also adjusted. The score should have been even more one-sided, but BC couldn't convert extra points and UConn got some garbage points late in the game.

Beyond the game, the big issues of note were freshman EJ Perry playing and BC locking up a bowl bid. I will have more on both issues this week.

I will be traveling so I don't know if I will have the grades up Sunday night. I will have something up. Stay tuned.

Below is my Post-game Periscope.

Not sure I get burning Perry’s redshirt in a mop up game but it seems clear that Wade is not a huge difference maker. If BC wants to finish strong against Syracuse I could see Perry getting some significant playing time.

My guess is that Perry wants to take his shot now and show that he can be the number one quarterback versus riding the bench behind Brown. He probably convinced Daz (who is fighting for job) to let him play. Can’t say that I blame him although if he is great we just lost a year of eligibility. Of course, if he is that great he wouldn’t be around for year five anyway.

You burn a redshirt on a turd of a game for a reason.

CT just came up with the title for Daz's autobiography.

How did Perry play?

From what I've read, the full extent of Anthony Brown's leg injury has not yet been disclosed. What we do know is Anthony required surgery on a 'leg' injury ending his season. It was also reported Addazio met with EJ Perry and his parents specifically about burning EJ's red shirt and they all agreed. Backup QB, John Fadule, is out indefinitely with a concussion leaving only Jeff Smith and EJ as back-ups to Wade

Attendance was 20,000.

That's pitiful.

Sat in bleachers, wet, all uconn fans, staring at 3-0 for a long time, was gonna jump off the green monsta, thank you Dillon and Hilliman...

In '15 Wade played 2+ games and still earned a redshirt. Perry plays 3 snaps this year and loses redshirt? Someone please explain.

UNLESS DAZZLE-NOT is ejected from the HEIGHTS it is imperative to keep

Loeffler, Reid and Brown in place with substantial raises if not we will soon be reminded of

Dazzle-Not's woeful lack of skills other than it seems recruiting.

In basketball Christian's fate must rest on ACC wins and does he bring in at least two
outstanding recruits!!! Wins should be six or 7.

If you're bringing in Perry and burning his red shirt, how about you let him throw the f*cking ball?

I don't care if you talked with his parents, or him, or whatever... just bringing him in and risking injury in those conditions yesterday to have him hand off the ball a hundred times was purely idiotic. That doesn't get you any meaningful "game experience" that the announcers were talking up.

It is freaking UConn. We should be trying to hang 100 on them, not pounding the ball in the 4th Quarter. The way we were sleep walking at the end of Defense, they dang well could have come back.

Daz truly is a moron. His roster management may actually be worse than his in-game management.

STL_eagle said...

Granted the weather was poor yesterday but it baffles me that the kiciking game has been such a point of inconsistency for the past few years. It is a critical position that seems to need more depth than BC is allocating to the position.

Matt, wade’s redshirt in 15 was a medical redshirt. Granted when an injury ends your season and you’ve played fewer than 25% of the games (I believe that’s the cutoff).

Pretty shitty to burn the redshirt and never let him throw. No experience gained and a year of eligibility gone.

Eagle Esquire said...

I’m not sure, but I think it’s because Perry played late in the season. Wade went down in game three.

Eagle Esquire said...

I agree 100%. How does handing the ball off further his development? I’m not against burning his redshirt at all, it kind of makes sense when you figure we have two recruits coming in next year. They aren’t five stars, but are more decorated than Perry. He can always redshirt next year or the year after. He’s not going to surpass Brown. If Brown won’t be back beginning of next year at least one transfer should be brought aboard to prevent another 2015esqe QB fiasco. If Perry’s our best option next year look out. Wouldn’t Wade be back next year if he wants by the way? I’m not saying he’s a great option, but wouldn’t be terrible to have around.

I'm no expert, but maybe the coaches just wanted to get Perry on the field this week with no complications. It's maybe a "just get his feet wet" mentality, so he'll be just a little more ready at Syracuse, if needed.

Again, I'm no expert.

On the Shoulda/Coulda Category - imagine if we had beaten NC State, and were riding a 5 game win streak right now (instead of 4 of 5).

With that in mind, did you see how Wake Forest survived against NC State? Wolfpack fans must be beside themselves.

And how about Pittsburgh fans? Wow!

So we won a boring game before a parse crowd (I can see fans not showing up in the rain, but did they only sell 20,000 tickets?) but we're in a pretty good position going into Syracuse.

Now, I believe this game is huge for us, because it's a win-able game - even with the conservative approach used with Wade. However, I think BC will have to show some different wrinkles to win, even though the Orange got blown out at Louisville. They are tough in their Dome - ask Clemson.

A win next week = great finish - 5 out of 6 with 1 "Shoulda/Coulda".

A loss will show all of Daz's weaknesses.

As STL_eagle notes, our place kicking game will kill us if it's not straightened out. Rain or not, that was a pitiful performance, and continues the downward spiral so evident with the botched snap against NC State.

This had better not happen next week.

Go BC - it's on to Syracuse after your fun dinner today.

Big Jack Krack said...

BTW - I always root for our team to win, of course.

If we beat Syracuse, there's no way Addazio will be let go. I've been around for long time, and that's the way I see it.

And if we win, and the HC stays, I'm okay with that because we are winning (again) after all these years.

And looking ahead at possibilities (which is not cool to do) a bowl win ends the season 6 wins out of 7, with the one loss in the "Shoulda/Coulda" category.

So the turnaround is starting and next season looks pretty promising. Addazio has to get out of the gates, and quit with the early season BS.

A loss on Saturday at Syracuse puts a big damper on that optimistic outlook, because of the HC's own shortcomings, IMHO.

Go BC - BEAT SYRACUSE for crying out loud, and feel yor pride. Ever to Excel.

Big Jack Krack said...

And what needs to be done - and what must be done - is for BC and Martin Jarmond to drum up fan support and all that entails.

Remember that ad - What, you've never been to Suffolk Downs? Well, I've never been to Haaavaad! Do some catchy things to drum up interest.

Let's get some enthusiasm going, folks. I'll do my part by renewing season tickets even though I'm 1000 miles away.

Let's get some fannies into the seats and support these guys as they could go undefeated in September for a fast start for a change!!!!!

Welcome to Boston College! WELCOME!!! WE HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT TIME AND GREAT EXPERIENCE AS WE SUPPORT OUR TEAM TO PREVAIL!!!!

I actually dont hate the burning of Perry's redshirt. First off, the kid wasnt some stud recruit. Secondly, he is a freshman who has seen another freshman establish himself as a likely 3-4 year starter. That guy then goes down to injury. He sees that and he sees some bigger recruit kids coming in. Its not or never for him. I assume he pushed hard to get on the field. Plus, at the end of the day, we still need a backup QB. That vicious helmet to helmet cheap shot by that UGotConned idiot shows us that Wade is one hit away from being out. As for Wade, I thought he actually played well. When he let it rip on a couple deep balls, his receivers let him down. Stop being conservative with a 5th year senior and let him have the entire playbook.

The team played well except for the beginning of the 1st and end of the 4th. The kicking nightmare just never gets solved. As for the end of the game, I recognize we literally had third stringers out there, but that cannot happen. Also, did I see Larmont being helped off the field with what appeared to be a leg/knee injury? WTF is going on with the injuries this year? With the loss of Moore, we have literally lost three captains to season-ending injuries.

Cuse has nothing to play for anymore. If Dungy doesnt play next week, BC should win easily. That said, the Carrier Dome has been a house of horrors for BC historically. Imagine if Brown didnt go down? BC would have won last week over a not very good NC State team and would have literally scored 50+ against a terrible UGotConned team. Should of, could of, would of ...

Knucklehead said...

Dungey was out against Louisville. If he is out we can beat them.

We literally cannot stop a running QB be it UCONN or Louisville . . .

If Dungey can run we will have trouble.

John said...

Agree with Knuckle.

If Lamot got hurt, we're really in deep kimchee. Oh boy, I hope he's okay.

bceagle93 said...

Make no mistake — burning Perry’s redshirt has nothing to do with his development: it has to do with Daz’s job security. He knows he needs to win at Cuse and in the bowl game to ensure he returns next year. Perry gives him another option if Wade shits the bed.

We are not playing for an ACC or national championship here. We are lower tier bowl bound at best. No one is coming to games so who is he helping by getting the kid reps now? Daz cares about one person: Daz.

Clown show got to go.

No matter what happens , we do not want a bowl in Detroit
Better not to go.

Pinstripe much better
Locale NYC at Christmas
Opponent big 10

Please !

STL_eagle said...

Pinstripe would be a good location but a win next week is important to secure the bid.

While initially surprised at burning Perry’s redshirt, the fact is that BC has two important games left this season and, as we saw with Brown, Perry is one snap away from being callled in to replace Wade due to injury or poor performance. Additionally, there are no guarantees that Brown comes back from his injury in top form and getting some experience now could be critical for BC’s start next season.

Lastly, I understand that there is a good corps of quarterbacks coming up the recruiting ranks so leveraging Perry now and for the next three years as a companion/alternate to Brown as those quarterbacks develop could make sense.

We won’t really know the impact for another three seasons beyond this one. Perhaps we will be saying that we wished we had another season of Perry but I suspect that we will be ok.

Knucklehead said...

The QB from the Bronx will be good but he isn't starting for 2 years if the schedule holds. McDonald is a clown he is won't amount to anything as a QB at BC.

Point being if Brown is seriously injured and doesn't start next season which is likely then you need Perry to play. If he is good then he will keep the job.

So get him of the field against UConn, have him breathing down Wade's neck against Syracuse(it worked against UConn), give him most of the reps during the month off before the bowl and start him in the Bowl( or give him every other drive etc).

Will say it again. You don't have a starting QB next season because of the Brown injury. Perry needs to be worked into place.

McDonald is a clown? Basis?

☺️ Irish Hurling drew more fans to Fenway than BC - UCONN. ☺️

JBQ said...

@John: From someone who is Irish, I would ask you to be more specific on the "Irish hurling" Was that before or after a Red Sox game and did they have to clean up the "Ted Williams seat" at 502 feet? I too think that McDonald has the genes and deserves a look.---Pin Stripe projections have BC playing a "powerhouse" in Akron. I would consider going to the Bronx but not to see Akron.

John said...

JBQ - BJK here. Four Hurling teams from Galway, Clare, Tipperary and Dublin played for the Players Championship Cup at Fenway Park - I think today. That's the date on the article in the Globe.

28,000 fans attended. ☺️

zero desire to see AKRON
waste of time and effort

Wasn't recruited by the West Coast schools doesn't have QB mentality just wants to get a scholarship to a good school.

Rebel Eagle said...

Wade earned a medical redshirt which I believe is 3 games or less played and season ending injury.

Without the injury 1 play is counted as playing that season

John said...

I haven't seen the odds yet, but if Dungey doesn't play or is gimpy and can't run as well, I predict a 32 to 19 BC victory - even in the Dome.

If Dungey is full strength, it's a different story. Don't know much about his backup vs our backup. ☺️

Go BC - beat Syracuse.

hsk said...

Dungey in all probablility will not be playing, SU, and he, have nothing to gain and it sounds like his “lower leg injury” has some issues.....

JBQ said...

@BJK: 26k for hurling (you have to know that I was talking an Irish joke) and 20k announced for UConn. Oh my goodness.---BTW, there is now one projection of BC playing Iowa in New York. That would be a lot of fun. The farm boys not only produce our food but are pretty nice about it. I really like Coach Kirk Ferentz.---Not only that, it might be good to consider him as an interim coach. BC needs to can Addazio and bring in someone who can bridge the gap between now and tomorrow. I would say that whatever Tommie C advised would be the way to go.---I guess that everyone noticed that TC called the bluff of the fabulous running back from LSU, Leonard Fournette, and suspended him for playing hard to get with the team photo. Jacksonville then came out "loaded for bear".
