Brown out of year; Addazio gets no free pass

Some bad but not unexpected news on the injury front. Anthony Brown is done for the year.

This is unfortunate and very disappointing. While inconsistent and raw, Brown played very well as a Freshman and was a key part of BC's best games. I hope for a speedy and smooth recovery and look forward to him playing again.

HOWEVER...

BC sits at 5-5 with UConn and Syracuse remaining. Win won game and BC goes bowling. Lose both and BC is home with a 5-7 record in Year 5. If Addazio cannot get one win from these two struggling teams, he does not deserve to come back. Injuries are bad luck and BC has been unlucky this year, but a good coach manages games around injuries and a good program builder has an effective plan for his back up quarterback.

Darius Wade is the presumptive starter. Fadule is out for the year too, so I assume true freshman EJ Perry is the backup. I know Addazio wanted to redshirt Perry, but if Wade is not up to the task, I say play Perry now. If he helps beat UConn, then all of a sudden he is starting games as a true freshman and starting a bowl game. He can always redshirt next year if he and his parents want that extra year. But the point remains, Addazio has to pull out all the stops and get BC to a bowl game and finish with a winning record. UConn is terrible. There is no reason BC can't win just by handing it off to Dillon 30+ times.

When Addazio beat FSU, I said he was safe. Now -- because he mismanaged the NC State game -- that breathing room is gone. If he can't get this team ready without Brown, BC needs to make a change.

Addazio is 1-13 against ranked teams and 13-26 in ACC games. We already have all the info we need to evaluate Addazio, regardless of what happens the next two games.

Best wishes to Brown.

With so many teams going bowling, we might get in at 5-7 with our high Academic Progress Rate. That's not a comforting thought.

What worries me about this is not the downgrade from from AB to Wade, but the potential juggle to our O line. Do we re-arrange the line to put our better guys on the right? Do we keep things as is even though Wade's blindside was virtually unprotected against NC State. It wasn't that he held it too long, its that Chubb was practically firing in on him untouched.

This is why I always said that Daz needed to go at the end of the year, even after the 3 game revelation. The well is poisoned. The minute he screws up, all of the doubters come right back. His credibility is gone. So long as he keeps winning, its harder to criticize, but each and every loss will be met with outcry. I consider him dormie (like in golf match play). If he loses a game, he loses the job.

God speed to AB. I hope he heals quickly and returns to form in the offseason. I really like the promise he shows and look forward to seeing him grow and develop as a QB.

Travesty if he burns Perry's redshirt year in this kind of season. Get Jeff Smith reps as backup -- can run read option offense. We have been running all over people the last few games. If we can't do so against UCONN or Syracuse, then we deserve to stay home during bowl season.

Either way, clown show got to go.

Curious why they haven't announced what type of leg injury it is. Looking at it on TV, I assumed it was an ACL tear as it was a non-contact injury and he couldn't put any weight on it. I hope it's another injury that, while still unfortunate, will not be as damaging to his health and athleticism. Players rarely return being as explosive as they once were before an ACL tear.

Unfortunately, but not unexpected. I also dont understand why Jeff Smith isnt an option. Wade is not good. There is no other option besides Smith if Wade struggles. I dont think a true freshman who has probably taken little to no snaps even in practice is an answer ...

Knee injuries are tough and I wish AB the best. He joins quite a growing list of players who have been handed a sh!t deal through serious injury. We have the utmost respect for these guys who risk it every play.

The Jeff Smith at QB option is interesting as a stop gap - or as a back up plan if Wade got hurt (Heaven forbid) or is ineffective.

He is much more knowledgeable and mature in Year 3 than as a brand new true Freshman. I wonder if he could make a quick transition back.

Most of us don't know much about Perry or McDonald.

UConn is ranked 140 by Sagarin and 115 by CBS sports.

BC will 100% beat UConn by a lot.

Daz will go bowling.

Daz will be back in 2018

Syracuse does not matter.

In fairness to Daz, he has some success to count. the team has a ton of potential for next year. And easy things to improve.... Dillon catching passes. Brown on poise and accuracy... Team seems to really like Daz and had great energy in before Brown hurt. 8-4 or 9-3 are truly possible next year. (our OOC is Holy Cross, UMass, Temple and @Purdue)

What if Brown's recovery time is a year? Then he is out for 2018. If that is the case Perry may be the logical choice. Hopefully BC can beat U Conn with mostly running plays and 20 or less throws are needed. Syracuse may be eliminated from bowl consideration with a loss to Louisville. The freshman QB could get the experience three starts this year would provide and have a head start on next year. Mix in Smith with the read option and have Wade in reserve. Find out what you have. Even if Brown makes a full early recovery and is available next year you have two QBs of proven ability. ATL is correct.

Wasn't there another three star QB recruit ( pro style pocket passer) or is he comes in next year?

BCEagles2014 said...

Yes, you're correct GE. Matt Valecce out of Fordham Prep. We also have a QB coming in next year from Bergen Catholic. I have watched him play when he played my old high school this year. He does not have a great arm but is vey athletic and plays with a ton of fire. I can see him being switched to a receiver or defensive back.

I just hope we beat UConn so Daz can continue his dominance of non- Power Five teams. Daz is 14-1 against non- Power Five teams... and 15-31 against the Power Five.

C’mon Cupcake King! Give us another big win!

Start Jeff Smith in the wild cat against UConn. Get the win and move on. The only way Dazzler starts Perry is if he knows he isn't getting fired. He isn't putting his BC career on the line with a 19 year old freshman.

The concern for me is not this season we are beating UConn. It is next season. If Dazzler is coaching with next season in mind ie knows he isn't getting canned then he would start Perry because Brown could be out for next season as well and we have nobody else with credibility on the roster right now.

Bc should beat UConn easily. Syracuse will tell us more. Either way Dax will be back and we will have another frustrating year.

Knucklehead said...

Not sure how anything can be gleaned from the rest of this season with the QB being done. Unless we lose to UConn.

BC should ditch the turf and go back to real grass. Turf eats knees and ankles.

The Boston Globe has reported that AB will undergo knee surgery; Wade will start backed up by Perry, whose Redshirt will be burned if necessary - per Addazio.

My sense is that Jarmond has already made up his mind to drop Daz and likely has his successor identified but will give Daz one more year if he wins out.

Napolean Bonaparte said...

If Daz gets one more year - Jarmond has plenty of hiring to keep himself busy. We desperately need a new WBB coach and very likely a new MBB coach. There are also one or two new coaches needed in some of the lower profile sports.

Even if Daz wins out (UConn, Syracuse and a bowl game, all very winnable games), he'll merely even his record at BC at 32-32. His career record would move to 45-43. His record against peer schools and ranked teams is bad and abysmal, respectively, as Tim pointed out above. He is 58 years old and unlikely this late in his career to suddenly flip a switch and become a different coach. Why would anyone want to keep him in light of the mountain of evidence that he is nothing more than a mediocre coach?

Knucklehead said...

Momentum, players are coming together, like him, talent is improving and he runs a clean program.

He should have won on Saturday. Brutal loss for everyone. If he loses to UConn and Syracuse he is out. If he wins one he is coming back.

Seems like classic idiot Boston College to fire its coach once it becomes competitive again.

If he goes 6-6 and gets fired it is a bad termination. Unless you are telling me Brian Kelly or someone of that ilk is coming in.

I am very interested to see Jarmonds hiring philosophy though.

Knucklehead said...

Another reason, Before BC and now he goes to church on Sunday . . . Espouses the philosophy of the school from a position where it is difficult to do so.

That being said, if he loses the next two games he probably gets let go.

BCAlum2000 said...

Leaving aside the Church aspect, which could or could not matter to Leahy, I agree with Knucklehead. Adazzio by virtue of that three game ACC win streak and now the easy/legit excuse that comes from the Brown injury, has likely earned himself another year. This of course assumes he doesnt lose to UConn ... that would be an immediate termination offense. That said, there will be a TON of pressure on him next year. Anything less than 8 wins should result in his termination at that point. The real conundrum is if BC finishes 6-6 and loses the bowl game to have a losing record. Or even if they win the toilet bowl they play in, but a guy like Chip Kelly has made it clear he would take the job. Jarmond has a tough task ahead ...

Knucklehead said...

Next season is the big one for Dazzler. He has overrated Strachan and Baker coming back. A damn good defense and what will be a B graded offense next season. In the non league he has Holy Cross and some other schmuck team as automatic wins and huge games against similar opponents Purdue and Temple. He has to win all 4 or 3/4 and pull an upset to get to what o agree is a required 8 wins. But even if he gets 7 I don't see him being canned unless Leahy makes the call. Still think Dazzler is Leahy's guy and Jarmond is hands off unless Leahy gets the word from above and send it down to Jarmond.

BCAlum2000 said...

I dont know about Jarmond and what authority he does or does not have. I have to imagine he would not have accepted the gig unless he was guaranteed autonomy/authority by Leahy and others. He was a high-riser and young enough that he could have just waited a bit longer at Ohio State. I have to imagine the decision on Adazzio is his.

Knucklehead said...

The hiring decision on football will be his and the rest of the department is his but Dazzler leaving is Leahy's call. Too much time, money and support has been allocated to him and if they can get him to succeed then Leahy's gets a big W himself.

I don't like Dazzler very much, despised Jags(BC man fraud) and Spaz(arms folded asshole) and thouhght TOB was ok but if you win you win and cannot be canned for it. 6-7 wins with the prospects we have now and potential for 8+ wins isn't going to get Leahy to ok him being fired.

Syracuse just gave up 64 points to Wake Forest, and UConn blows... This should be a fair audition to keep the job, and a split doesn't buy another year necessarily. However, it seems Daz finds that falling back on the excuse that injuries (ie the players) failed, not the system. It's bullshit crybaby finger-pointing and the students, fans, alumni, and donors shouldn't have to listen to it in year 5.

Sure, tough loss to NC State last week. NC State is talented. But Wade didn't lose the game; he wasn't put into a position to succeed. The defense was great, but for one play, they forgot Hines has some breakaway speed and took poor angles.

With a week to prepare, BC should be able to win with a ferret at QB vs UCONN. I know this is true, because I was at the VTech game where they picked some random safety (Nick Sorenson), lined him up at QB, and walked off with a Thursday night win. At Cuse, Wade can manage the game and be favored to win. Play to his strengths, tailor the line to protect his sight lines, and for the love of God, run more than 4 different plays.

It's amazing to me that people look at UConn and Syracuse as some sort of litmus test for Addazio's tenure. These are middling to bad teams that any halfway decent coach should defeat. Even if Addazio wins both, it simply tells us (again) what we already know about the guy after 61 games in almost five full seasons-- he can generally win against weak and mediocre competition. It does not tell us that he suddenly transformed into a guy that can win 8-9 games annually or, even more importantly, beat top teams. For that matter, neither does the three-game win streak against teams that are a combined 9-12 in the ACC (15-14 overall).

Elsewhere in college football, you see schools about to pull the plug on the tenure of coaches with winning percentages like .667 (Sumlin), .613 (Mora), and .587 (Graham). But here at BC we are happy with our .500-at best guy-- but we've really got our fingers crossed that he can turn the corner!

Knucklehead said...

The bench is the only position Wade is going to be successful at. Again Jeff Smith should be the QB.

There is always a last straw. These two games could be it. Get the importance now.

And frankly I don't want to lose to stinking UConn.

Knucklehead said...

Litmus test. Nobody said anything of the sort.

BCAlum2000 said...

Not a litmus test at all. Moreso, if he loses both, he should be gone. IN fact, if he loses to UConn, he should be immediately canned. Agreed, both teams suck. UConn much more.

CT said...

They won’t need Perry this week. UConn gives up 42 a game to a poo poo schedule. Wade will be fine. I wouldn’t burn his redshirt for one game plus the bowl. We’re stuck in Bowl Purgatory this season.

Having said that, they’ll probably split time now.
